Hotel is like most in cuba. Tired and not maintained properly. However rooms are clean and everything worked. ( tv, fridge, shower, lamps etc)
Weather in January is this area is 18-26 degrees daily. Wind and rain are not a surprise. Pool water was dirty with bugs and leaves etc.. floating around. Hotel is the only beach front hotel at playa del este. Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever seen. And I’ve travelled a lot. Covid related- everyone is wearing mask all the time , indoors and outdoors. Due to Covid-19,many places are closed, ( small restaurants little kiosks etc) Covid testing facility is 40km away ( on the other side of Havana) and it will cost you 1000 pesos return trip to go get tested , and another 1000 to pick up results. They don’t mail them, they don’t fax them.testing is only done 9-12 am but picking up is 24/7 ( so they say) You need to pick them up. Out of 3 tests they did for my group, they make mistakes in typing names on 2. Then we waited more for the results to be re-typed . Test is 30usd . -credit card only- visa only. In addition they double charged me which I’m still to call visa about. If cab is split 4 ways, that’s 20usd a person plus 30 for test each. It will also cost you two days at 3 hours each. Because of Covid and small number of tourists there are no taxis readily available. You better book it a day or two before and hope they show up.
When you first arrive and are tested at the airport, they give you a a yellow arm band in the hotel. You’re not supposed to go anywhere with yellow band but there’s nobody stopping you if you do. Then you wait 3 full days and on the morning of the 4th day, you get green band. Internet in the hotel doesn’t work longer than 30 seconds, but they won’t know this as in general their English skills are poor and their IT understanding not existent. Food is excellent for cuba ( and I’ve been to 15+ Cuban resorts)
They actually had salads ( veggies are rare at these places) and they had chicken, beef or pork in various meals which is also rare. Stuff is trying to help, but with their limited knowledge this often amounts to no help at all. Also, CUC is accepted only in the bank and nowhere else. CAD is only accepted in the bank as well. CUC = 24, USD =24 and CAD 16 pesos.
If you ask anyone else you will get 30 up to 38 peso per USD . People desperately look for USD. I routinely exchanged USD for 33-36 pesos without issues in small stores or restaurants.
All in all, with waiting 3 days for results, 50USD AND 6 hours wasted to test again, stress of organizing it and anticipation of results ( what if you test false positive?) makes the trip unpleasant . Walking to the east 3 km on the road next to the beach will get you to another hotel. You may walk in ( like I did) only to find out that it’s a Hotel for asymptomatic Covid patients. Of course no guard at the beach .. once you walk in you may be in trouble and not be able to leave..
Personally I like adventure, so I didn’t mind any of this, however anyone who is looking for relaxing vacation.. this ain’t it.

The following is based on our observation and that of many other guests we spoke with in general conservations. 1. Food was the same all day everyday. 2. People serving us were not interested. It seemed like we were bothering them when we asked for something. 3. Resort overall was dilapidated and would need major improvements. 4. Sunwing rep wasn't very knowledgeable. We had to point out places of interest. 5. Beach was fabulous. . We've been all over the world and our expectations are always very low as we never expect it to be like home but, in this case, the overall experience for the $ was not worth it.

Great location near Havanna, beautiful beach, typical Cuban buffet, thankfull for close restaurants. Were told we had to pay for drinking water at the bar.Beds were comfortable however renovated rooms were not what we would consider renovated in Canada. NO faceclothes, cheap internet in lobby 1$ per hour,We have traveled Cuba before and don't expect much however the stray dogs screwing in the hotel bar and pissing on the many flower pots around the hotel was disgusting.Dogs barking most nights all hours.Complained to front desk staff and Sunwing rep with no resolution. This hotel could be so much better with a few changes.

PROs • Lovely beach • Free shuttle to Havana every day (have to reserve in advance) • We enjoyed the live music very much (however, the bands seem to play for only one quick set) • Free use of paddle boats, catamaran rides • Some friendly staff • Nice lounge area beside reception • Fresh papaya juice each day! CONS: • There was set of stairs right near our room that would be a direct route to the beach (rather than having to walk through the reception, lounge, restaurant, and pool areas). When I descended these stairs, the door at the bottom was locked and I was greeted by 6-7 used condoms and condom packages on the stairs. Lovely. • We had small things stolen from both of our rooms. See the management’s responses on this thread to see proof of the awful customer service. The response to stolen property seems to be—that’s not true, too bad so sad, go into town and spend one of your time and money to report it to police (which we all know would go no where) • There was a rumour going around among guests that one cleaner stands at the top of the stairs and warns the other cleaner in the rooms when someone is coming up the stairs. Hmm, just realized something, interesting tie in with point number one (only 1 staircase of 2 was available for use by guests) • Quite consistently unfriendly staff and poor customer service. I don’t buy the argument that you need to be friendlier. I am a very friendly person who speaks some Spanish and who always makes an effort. The attitude seems to be—we’ll be quite rude, and if you tip we’ll be a little less rude (apart from a few lovely servers in the dining area) • I can understand not have access to parts for repairs and so on, but what is needed to wash windows, some vinegar and paper? The windows were filthy. • Our washrooms smelled like sewage throughout our trip. • They ask for a $20 CAD deposit at the front desk for the key for the balcony. Fine, but they said that they would return it in CUCs! On the day you are leaving and when you can’t use CUCs at the airport. When we protested, they changed their minds and said that we could get our Canadian dollars back. • The rooms smelled like smoke and the cleaning ladies smoke while working • The first room we were in had paint peeling in chunks off the ceiling/large pieces of paint on the floor and mould coming through paint on the walls. Also, this "oceanview room" had no view of the ocean, but a view of a roof with broken air conditioners. • The shower water is mostly either scalding or cold; moving the tap does not seem to change the temperature. • The loudspeaker on the beach is annoying • We made reservations for the a la carte restaurant, but on the night of our reservation the restaurant was closed for a holiday. That’s fine, but someone could have given us a heads up (Or, better yet, not taken the reservation to begin with) In summary, I have been to Cuba many times since the 90s because I love the the music (I've even stayed at Atlantico before), but we will not be back. This trip left a very bad taste in our mouths. There is an obvious problem with management at this resort and their responses on this forum prove the point.

Going into it you need to remember you are going to a 3 start hotel in Cuba. I will admit, the rooms are not perfect, were I to get a room like this in Canada, I would be outraged. But the beds are comfortable, the shower works albiet the temperature is tricky to get right, even then it fluctuated. The food is bland, but that is normal for Cuba, but you can always find something you like. The bar doesn't have much selection its beer, wine or rum but no fancy drinks, however there is a stand on the street close to the hotel that sells pina coladas. All that concidered, if you want to be near Havana, this is the place to go. This is the ONLY Hotel in the Havana area that is directly on the beach, The rest are across the street or a few minutes walk from the beach. The beach is really nice, although there are local beaches close by so there are usually locals around. Visiting Havana is definitely one of my favourite parts, and I love being close by. They also have a really great pool as well, and it is always cleaned regularly. The hotel also offers a free shuttle bus to Havana for the day. There are only about 20 seats available per day, and you have to book ahead of time. You can also take the bus for 5cuc if they free seats are all taken. Guanabo is close by, 5cuc taxi during the day and 10cuc in the evening. There are many great restaurants there, a nice change from the bland hotel food. Chicken Little is great as well as Restaurante 421. What really makes up for the old hotel is the staff. They are extremely friendly and is the reason I keep going back. I recently booked my 3rd trip. Once they find out you are Canadian, they will talk to you for hours. They have games throughout the day and entertainment most nights. Kindness goes a long way with them. I have always found a couple waiters I like and tip every meal and they will go out of their way for you because they know you will tip and appreciate it so much.

Room Tip: the rooms on the east side, and close to the road have noise from delivery trucks and the bus.
