The Hotel Nacional de Cuba captivates with its historic charm, featuring airy rooms and a clean pool nestled in well-maintained gardens, where live music enhances the nostalgic ambiance. While some guests highlight the prime location near Havana's attractions, opinions on the rooms and value vary, with some citing outdated facilities and others appreciating the spacious cleanliness. The service receives commendations for friendliness, though it's not without its occasional lapses. Despite mixed feedback, the hotel's vintage allure and prime location continue to draw travelers.

Hotel Nacional is one of the key sights of Havana and I'm glad we stayed 4 nights. It's a long walk along the Malecon to old Havana (probably 3 km), but worth doing at least once. There is always live music (even at breakfast) plus in the courtyard in the evenings. The 10am historic walking tour is a MUST (free, even if you are no a hotel guest). It takes approx 1 hour and takes you to the roof, the rooms on the 2nd floor where many famous people have stayed plus the star bar. (My photo can go on the wall another time!) and the bunkers and tunnels built under the gardens on the NE side [Fascinating].
Breakfast choice was huge and really good. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel as there are several local restaurants nearby (5 min walk). Room was good size and comfortable although it took several minutes before any hot water arrived at the shower. Staff are very proud of the hotel and its history and regularly claim that it is the best hotel in Cuba - this is not true, but probably was in the 1950s.
There are a couple of swimming pools (one closed when we stayed), but the larger freeform one accessed off the lower floor next to the breakfast room was fine (free towels obtained just as you enter the pool area).
Easy to change money (as a hotel guest) at the cashier to the left of reception (seemed to be fair rates, even for small amounts).
The hop-on/off bus doesn't stop at the Nacional, but there are stops outside the nearby Hotel Habana Libra (50 m left from its entrance on Calle L) or closer still at the bottom of Avenida 23 (just up from the junction with Infanta). These are on the return leg, so will take you into old Havana where you will need to get on the next bus tour. At the end of the day when you want to return to the hotel, the outward route runs along the Malecon toward the US embassy and the driver was happy to drop us off in front of the Nacional when we asked.

had a fantastic holiday in the amazing Hotel Nacional (7 Nights)

we stayed in a large seaview room third floor.arrived mid day checking in went very smoothly as there has been negative comments on checking in.

I must say if you looked at all of the bad reviews about the nacional you would
run a mile and book the nearest casa,The bottom line is if you want a modern hotel with all mod cons !! or do you want to spend a fantastic holiday in a charming aged gem.
yes its old and it rattles a wee bit like the maracas and old vintage cars ! thats part of the adventure, the hotel is placed in a great location for traveling to various parts of havana,we walked the malceon most days and got a different type of transport back to hotel !! taxis and buses and vintage cars and ricksaws ! cost would vary but you soon find out the first day how much things cost.

we only stayed bed & breakfast and that is a great start to the day ! you wont have to eat till late in the day ! never used hotel restraunt just snacks at the bars,
The Swimming pool is very relaxing and clean and waitress service at the pool bar
free towels and there is a cafe restraunt next to pool and you can exchange money
at the bank next to swimming pool.

The Hotel staff were fantastic apart from a few ( Bottom bar) looking out to malceon rude and not helpful thats the only small complaint we never went
back to that bar !

we have had many holidays in various parts of the world / Cuba havana ranks
as one of our best trips and our stay in the Nacional was part of the great memories that we will cherish

Havana is a great friendly place and safe and very genuine nice people

we will be back to cuba and the Nacional

I Hope all the staff at the nacional & cubans are safe & well
we just departed before Covid 19 (Coranavirus) had started to take hold

god bless
take care

Thank you very much for choosing us for your stay in Havana and for taking part of your time in sharing your experience with other travelers. Your positive comments about our services - check in, room, pool service, breakfast service - encourage us to continue working to improve our service standards. We regret your dissatisfaction with the service of the garden bar, it is our duty to eliminate these dissatisfactions of attitude that only affects us, we are engaged in a systematic plan of training and coaching. The ¨Hotel Nacional de Cuba¨is 90 years old in 2020, many of the decorations, objects, curtains, some windows, statues, clocks, the fountain, the cannons belonging to the Battery of Santa Clara; are original, for this reason the hotel is identified as a truly historic hotel. We are happy knowing that Havana, Cuba classifies as one of the best trips you has made and that your stay at our hotel was memorable. Right now the world is going through a very difficult time with the Coronavirus pandemic. We hope you stay home and take care of yourself, we wish you good health. We hope to see back in the future in our ¨Hotel Nacional de Cuba¨

I was concerned about a mold issue since I'm allergic. The hotel is a gorgeous classic hotel but in need of updating. The rooms are carpeted with heavy curtains with windows that do not open. I so wanted to hear the waves but that wasn't possible. And the musty smell would not dissipate even with the AC fans.

It was a weekend getaway so I could medicate, and it is special place, so be advised.

They have entertainment and a decent buffet breakfast. The Buena Vista Social Club performed and were fabulous!

Dear Customer: It was a pleasure to welcome you in the National Hotel of Cuba, which is living its 90 years. Delighted to read that the concert that takes place at the Hotel is guided every Tuesday and Saturday with classical orchestral wonders. We apologize for the problems you may have had, they will be evaluated with the personnel involved, because our pleasure is the satisfaction of our customers, and your comment is very helpful because it helps us to raise quality standards. Hopefully I'll be back soon. Best regards. Sincerely

The hotel is ideally located overlooking the sea and is an instantly recognised landmark in Havana. The public rooms still reflect the elegance of its heyday but unfortunately the same is not true of the standard rooms. The décor is worn and the bathroom fittings showing definite signs of wear and tear, as do the towels. Also, hotels elsewhere of supposedly the same level do not charge for tea and coffee in the room. However, these faults are more than compensated for by the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the breakfast and sitting at the outside bar with a cool drink is an ideal way to end the day. I'd also recommend doing the free tour of the hotel - our guide (Igor I think) was very knowledgeable and informative with a good sense of humour. Looking at some of the other options available, with their boring, functional construction, I'd definitely choose the Nacional again

We have zero complaints about this hotel. Yes it is old, but there is a ton of history there. Our room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Breakfast was phenomenal. Wait staff was attentive. Concierge was super helpful and called local restaurants to make reservations for us. Cigar shop was amazing. Mariela was our maid while we were there and she was so sweet and friendly and did a great job making sure our room looked great when we returned each evening. I highly recommend this hotel.

Thank you very much for your report, it is our satisfaction that our clients prefer us, leave happy, return and also recommend through their experience so that other travelers know about the hotel. The ¨Hotel Nacional de Cuba¨will be 90 years old next December and there is really a lot of history to tell in this "enchanted castle" as described by an important Cuban writer. That is why one of our main attractions is to show our heritage values among others as example , the cannons that belonged to the Battery of Santa Clara located in the hotel garden. We are encouraged to continue improving our services reading that you were happy with your room and breakfast. Much more satisfying is reading positive comments about the service from our staff. They are very committed to the service of the hotel and have been working here for a long time. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to your return in the future. Please , take care , we wish you good health for you and your family.

I stayed at this hotel as a treat following a trip travelling around Cuba. The staff were unfriendly and often rude, most did not speak any english. My room was flooded (I’m fairly certain this was not a new problem) with water pouring from the ceiling. I then had to move rooms in the middle of the night with no appology or help with luggage. The room I moved to had a big gap at the window so was very noisey and drafty with the wind.
Breakfast was poor at best, with no table service even for tea and coffee and the hot food made me sick, ruining the last day of my holiday. They kick you off the internet the moment you check out and then to buy a 1 hour card is 4.50 CUC (normally 2 CUC). I did this as I had a late flight and was unwell, I was then challenged by the doorman as to how I had got onto the internet and whether I had used it.

It’s a beautiful building with incredible views and quite an experience but I would reccommend a passing visit rather then wasting money to stay here.

Dear Customer, We regret that our service could not meet your expectations. First of all, thank you for choosing us for your stay in Havana, to improve our standards of service for the management and staff of the hotel, the positive and negative opinions we receive from our clients are very important. It is not really frequent that the air conditioning suffers a breakdown and spills the water, it happened in your room, what we did and did not do was attend to it personally and compensate in some way for the discomfort. We take note of the breakfast service, it is one of the most important services for the hotel, which we have to supervise and train the staff to avoid impressions like the one you show us. With respect to the internet service the hotel has it included for guests, when the time expires, it does not disconnect automatically, for our guests we can make exceptions if you requested the exception, and it was not granted it is our duty to work and train more to Our staff on customer service. In your last statement you relate the doorman to the internet ticket, please if you were so kind and if you wish, write inside to be able to better understand what happened and not be repeated. We hope to have the opportunity to assist you again and receive the attention you expect. Regards

The hotel is nice. It's old but well-kept and clean. Each floor is a little different. We stayed in two different rooms (one at the beginning and one at the end of our Cuba trip). A/C worked well, plenty of room, nice bathrooms. Staff was always ready to help. The pool was nice. The restaurant for breakfast buffet had lots of options including filtered water.

I stayed 5 nights out of 10, on a family trip in this hotel. Our trip was segmented into 2 nights in hotel Saratoga, 2 nights in Casa's in Trinidad and Cienfuego , followed by 4 nights in Nacional, 1 night in Vinales and 1 more night in Nacional. The first 4 nights at Nacional we stayed on the 6th floor, which has its own check-in/out desk. This is supposed to be the executive floor. The rooms are very large and some have tile floors while others have carpeting. The bathrooms are also large and unlike hotel Saratoga, there is plenty of hot water. This hotel is not on the list of forbidden hotels

Having spent 17 days in Cuba, including 5 in a Casa Particulares in Havana at the start of our holiday, we decided on a night in Hotel Nacional to finish off a fantastic trip. The staff here did their best to spoil our time by being sullen, unhelpful and, at times, downright rude.
It is the most fantastic place with real history and amazing architecture but it was a real shock to suffer from their attitude as it was the complete opposite to everyone else we had dealt with on our Cuba travels.
You are charged for coffee and water (even though the tap water is not drinkable) in your room.
If going to Havana do visit this amazing hotel but don't make the mistake of staying here.

This is a beautiful old hotel and is perfectly situated in Havana. Our room, alas, did not have an ocean view which made it very dark but everything was spotlessly clean and our maid was so lovely and looked after us well. The food was okay - we had breakfast only included but did eat in one of the restaurants one evening. There was a fairly limited choice of menu but it was fine. The hotel grounds are really interesting and worth exploring the historical side like the bunkers. .
