    Fantastic place w minor flaws
We enjoyed 3 wonderful days in the beginning of March in this outstanding hotel. Location: small village on the countryside 20-25 from next cities. Park: wonderful pond and large park with old trees. Several drinking fountains where one is offered one small cup of the medicinal local water. A must! The water is extremely rich! Common areas: stunning! Absolutely gorgeous wallpapers, decoration, high ceilings and spacious rooms! The grand dining hall is a dream, so is the breakfast hall in which an absolutely dreamlike buffet is available. The fresh juices, the fresh fruit, nicely cut, the vegan hot choices, gluten free bread, seeds, homemade jam and vegan coffees made this breakfast perfect for us! Plus there is prosecco ;) One should plan at least an hour to enjoy this breakfast experience. Room: We had a parkside room on the 2nd floor w a tiny balcony. It was just perfect. Nothing to complain there either. It was a basic room, not too big, but really nicely decorated with all the comfort, in perfect state with a wonderful shower! The shower products were not to our liking. Unlike the great natural products they had in the spa, the beautifully packages products in the bathroom where not natural and felt and smelt not that nice. Spa: The spa is very well done, big and clean. The locker rooms and world-class, you get flip flops, a robe and 2 towels normally. On the other hand it is not well designed. It feels a bit sterile and boring. The outside pool and area was not open, but looked tempting. The only downside was the lady on the last day, that kind of pushed us out when the closing our came. I left the spa at 20.01 and me and my girlfriend considered her behaviour not adequate for such a place. Dinner: you must dine here at least once! On Friday there was a pianist which we appreciated a lot. The hall is fantastic. The service, the wine, salad and sorbet were delight full. Unfortunately the ordered vegan dishes had some butter and cheese in them... For the last night we asked for different dishes, this time fully vegan. We got an oriental noodle dish, which was nicely presented and fresh, but boring in taste. We very disappointed with the dish, but the overall experience was still excellent! We really want to come back to this place, given the chef can step up his game in vegan cooking ;) If those minor details can be fixed in the future, this hotel will be perfect. Most employees were amazing! Especially the ladies from the breakfast and the concierges(not reception), the barman that recommended the tastiest beer and port wine for me and the people in the restaurant, and also very much the lady in the drinking fountain. Price-wise we got a fantastic deal ;) It was so good that I didn't mind to get a little ripped of by the prices of the bottle of organic wine and the glass 0f 20years old port wine....

    Relaxing stay in Vidago Palace
My wife and I stayed at Vidago Palace for one night while in sightseeing northern Portugal. The palace is absolutely stunning. As soon as you drive through the gate, you feel like you've been transported to a royal palace in the 1920's. The architecture throughout the palace, from the grand staircase, to the ballrooms, and the mosaic floors are beautiful. More impressive is how easy it is to feel relaxed and at peace on the palace grounds. You can spend the entire day lounging and relaxing in the thermal waters, indoor pools, and sauna. There are walking trails and biking paths on the grounds around the beautifully-manicured 18-hole golf course. The staff were very attentive and the service was excellent. The restaurant, which is situated in their beautiful grand ballroom, was also exquisite. I highly recommend Vidago Palace to anyone looking for a relaxing classical luxury hotel stay.
Dear Guests, Thank you very much for your comments regarding your last stay with us at Vidago Palace Hotel. We do appreciate your feedback and reviews like yours make us more motivated every day and with the objective to improve even further. We would be happy to welcome you again soon at Vidago Palace Hotel. Kindest regards.

Glamour and quality in the country side
Vidago Palace Hotel is a place to be if someone looks for quiet, space, palace feeling and exclusivity. Common areas and rooms takes you to the high class of and the mundane life of the 19th century. The bed rooms are with the right amenities and are comfortable and peacefully. The restaurant has an international food quality and a film ambiance. The swimming pool and the exterior service are fine. The landscape is great integrates you in a valley with mountains on the back that invite walks. There is a golf course, which is not my sport, that looks green and well maintained.

The hotel has been restored/maintained beautifully. The architecture is great, and the grounds are nicely designed. BUT, it stops there. Rooms are small though clean. F&B is scandalously poor in terms of quality and value. Both days we stayed, the power system, wifi, and water supply to the shower failed. Nothing heard from management. Staff friendly enough, but certainly not trained to a 5 star standard. The management needs to be upgraded and F&B hugely improved to even begin to warrant the silly prices. We will never return and it is a pity because it could be a good place.

I came upon Vidago Palace while browsing through the properties that were included in the Virtuoso Network portfolio. I was immediately attracted to its unique and handsome architecture; the rather remote northern location, I thought, would be a welcome respite after spending the previous nine days in Marrakech and Lisbon. Bonus: there was a “Fourth Night Free” promotion being offered—an excellent value for this Leading Hotel of the World! It isn’t the easiest hotel to get to without a rental car (not on a rail line, and about 80 minutes from OPO), but judging by the information on the hotel’s website, and the reviews here and elsewhere, it seemed that it would be worth it. And it was. In advance of our arrival, I had several email exchanges with the concierge team to discuss transportation options and available tours. The rate we were quoted for the airport transfer seemed exceptionally high, so we used Bolt instead for almost 1/3 the cost. All emails were answered promptly and courteously. After an easy 80-minute drive from OPO with an affable Bolt driver, we turned into the driveway that leads to the hotel…and our jaws dropped. It is a magnificent building with lush, impeccably maintained lawns and gardens, and an atmosphere of times gone by… A pair of friendly bellmen took our luggage and escorted us up the grand staircase to the lobby to check in. Because we booked with a Virtuoso agent, and I’m a LHW Club member, we were upgraded to a Junior Suite. It wasn’t quite ready when we arrived (around 1PM), so we were invited to have lunch on the terrace of the bar. We ambled down a long hallway impressively decorated with a gorgeous wallpaper mural, and then through a sumptuous lounge outfitted in metres of velvet, brocade, tapestry, and fringe. Palace indeed! We ordered cocktails and sandwiches from the delightful Beatriz, and before they were even served we were informed that our room was ready. In my pre-arrival notes, I indicated that I like a corner room on a high floor, so I was delighted to discover that Junior Suite 208 was exactly that. With soaring twelve-foot ceilings, It’s more like an actual suite, however, as it has a small sitting room that can be closed off from the bedroom. In that room you have a daybed, a small coffee bar, and a wall-mounted television. There were four sets of French doors that could be opened onto delicate Juliet balconies; they were framed in a heavy and opulent brocade. The bedroom had a king sized bed with butter-soft linens, a cocktail table with armchair, a desk with straight chair, another television, a BOSE radio, and a pair of nightstands. We greatly appreciated the ample storage that was provided by two closets with lots of shelves, drawers, and hanging space. The large marble clad bathroom also had French doors directly in front of the soaking tub, double sinks, heavy monogrammed towels, and a terrific range of toiletries by Molton Brown. The temperatures during our stay were so comfortable that we were able to have all of the doors wide open most of the time (but at night, there are mosquitoes about, so we had to close them and use the AC). Upon returning to our room after an early evening walk into the town, we found that a *proper* turndown service had been performed: used towels replaced, curtains drawn, bottled water and glasses placed on the nightstand, slippers placed bedside on damask floor covers, and a duo of delicious cookies (ginger and chocolate) on the pillows. Few hotels get this right anymore, so it was lovely to receive that service here. During our stay the hotel had only about 10 occupied rooms, so we felt like we had the palace to ourselves! We made excellent use of the spacious and well-equipped gym, the water features at the spa, and the large outdoor pool with ample seating and umbrellas. We dined at all of the hotel’s facilities (bar, pool bar, Winter Garden, Wine Cellar, Salão Nobre, and room service), and all were excellent. Starting the day with a generous buffet breakfast in the spacious and beautiful Winter Garden room was a treat. The staff there was so welcoming, and our coffee and tea orders were always delivered in a flash. And don’t miss dinner at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Salão Nobre, in the lavish ballroom. The decor alone is reason enough to visit, but the food and service is outstanding as well. We appreciated the many little extras provided by the kitchen: bread and oil service, amuse-bouches, palate cleanser, and mignardises. It was the perfect way to spend our last night at the hotel. The two tours that the hotel arranged for us were highlights of our stay. I didn’t realize that the concierge himself, the suave and handsome Angelo, attired in an elegant navy pinstriped suit, would be our chauffeur and guide. He drove us in an impeccable Mercedes sedan (stocked with water) and provided interesting commentary about the region along the way. Everything was included in the tour prices: transportation, admission tickets, boat cruise, and three-course lunches at fantastic Michelin-recommended restaurants. We felt like VIPs! Make sure to spend some time exploring the vast grounds of the hotel to take in the beautiful scenery, and visit the whimsical antique buildings that used to house the famous mineral water that people would drink for its restorative powers. There is still one that is operational, so you can pop in and have a cup. The interiors of these buildings are delightful as well! Our stay at Vidago Palace exceeded my very high expectations for a 5-star Leading Hotel of the World and Virtuoso property. After the heat and chaos of Marrakech and Lisbon, this bucolic and tranquil retreat was exactly what we needed. This kind of hotel experience seems increasingly harder to find, so it is definitely worth the effort to get here and experience what surely must be one of Portugal’s national treasures.

One of the best hotel experiences in the world. The sense of special occasion arises even as you drive up to the grounds, the gatekeeper acknowledges your arrival and directs you up to the main entrance and there's a member of staff to greet you as you get out of the car. The car was parked for us. We were whisked to the reception. The staff here and throughout the stay were excellent. (We had had some difficult family news and needed a recovery period) without any fuss this was factored in by the hotel and made the visit more than could be reasonably expected. It felt more than hospitality, more like humanity. The room was beautiful, as were all the public spaces. Though we didnt eat at the main restaurant the food in the basement restaurant and the bar was very good. The spa was very good, and the grounds were a delight to walk in.

What an amazing hotel. It's hard to know where to start. The hotel is simply stunning. The grounds are so peaceful surrounded by 100 hectares of forest. The lake, the sounds of frogs croaking and birds whistling. The additional buildings around the grounds as well as the golf course, tennis courts and pool. We had a classic room which included bathrobes and slippers. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and we. Both slept really well. We decided to eat in Grande Ballroom one evening. What a wonderful experience and food. We are so grateful to every single member of staff who were all so friendly and helpful.

Absolutely gorgeous hotel. The hotel is immaculate and the attention to detail is superb. You arrive at the gate and by the time you have driven to the front steps a member of the team is there waiting. The car is parked and bags are taken straight to the room. All the staff are incredibly efficient and friendly. Our room had been upgraded to a fabulous junior suite, thank you so much. We felt like guests of Lord and Lady Grantham at Downtown Abbey. The bedding was soft and silky and the bathroom was beautiful. The slipper bath was so comfortable and a great range of Molton Brown toiletries to be enjoyed. We dined at the bar and the wine cellar, service again was exemplary. Breakfast was fantastic, I cannot recall ever having such attentive service. I enjoyed the spa and had it all to myself for most of the time. The outdoor pool was not yet open which was a shame as it looked very inviting. We had a thoroughly relaxing time and will definitely return. It truly is one of the leading hotels of the world.

Oasis of peace in beautiful park natural surroundings with sumptuous decor. All dining - bar, ballroom, breakfast room delightfully different experiences. A truly wonderful stay. Only negative was the adult sloppy attire and cranky under 12 year olds admitted into the fine ballroom degustation dinner. We found that highly disrespectful of other diners and the special efforts of staff and grand pianist to create a memorable evening in a refined space.
