We spent our final night on our Golf Trip to Northern Portugal at the Vidago Palace Hotel. What a great quality Hotel in a style that transcends time, everything about it from entering the Gates is relaxing. Cool tree lined walkways gardens nd Terraces that you can disappear into, it’s a total experience from the get go. One night is not enough really but that was our stay. The Golf Course is also spectacular in design, with a Parkland feel and using the elevation of the land to create holes that you need to play several times to understand fully. Some holes were a bit crusty around the bunkers and on the Fairways but generally a good challenge for any level.

The hotel is indeed a palace, set in hilly tranquil countryside. The hotel was renovated ten years ago and is in very good shape. The decor is classic with touches of imagination, and always elegant. Service was always attentive, and the cuisine in the main dining room was first class. There are alternatives if one prefers a more informal meal. The indoor and outdoor swimming pools are open and pleasant. The golf is open and right by the hotel. There are several walks in the hills. It was a first visit and I lhope to return. Last but not least the local mineral water was a tonic! Its an easy drive from Porto on good motorways.

Back in the VPH for a weekend and still fans. Spring there is lovely. The trees are covered in leaves and roses are blossoming in the park. Breakfast is still a dream, so is the service everywhere (with one exception). The kitchen really tried to satisfy us as vegans. They stepped up their vegan cooking game some notches. Still is was not yet fully satisfactory. There where some amuse-buches, some starters and some mains and deserts that where excellent - and some that where not. We're not gonna give up ;) There are many employees that are doing one fine job at the Vidago: the sommelier!, the gentlemen from the reception and the ladies (&gentlemen) at dinner, breakfast and the bar. It was a pleasure to be your guests! The spa - to mention it once again - is a total architectural FAILURE. Modern simplistic architecture CAN work. We know that. Nothing against it. But the design of the this spa just falls flat on it's face. Ouch! What a waste of precious materials and space. The one responsable for it is a Portuguese architect called Álvaro Siza Vieira. I went on his website to check out his other work. It is not all that bad I gotta say. But this one? What was he thinking? Ok, enough of the architecture bashing. But damn is it bad compared to absolutely sublime interior design of the main building! A masterpiece! Very frustrating also was the fact that neither the outside jacuzzi, the sauna and steambath where open - due to a so-called pandemic. My wife was also let down a bit by the massage she got in the spa. The 50mins massage was over after 42 minutes and it was mediocre... I kind of wished that the whole spa would collapse into a sinkhole and trees would start growing there instead of it. Looking at the pictures of the former swimming pool, I'd prefer they hadn't changed anything. There is everything you need(besides a nice spa of course ;)) on the premises. I only left it for a 50mins walk around the hill behind the hotel. It was lovely. You get up to almost the peak of it, from where you enjoy 360° panoramic views of the tras-os-montes region of Portugal. They also rent MTBs which looked a bit forgotten to me. We are gonna be back and then we are gonna check out the Chaves Thermes 20mins away for deliciously hot water and hopefully better massages. Long live the Vigado Palace and boycott the spa ;) Just kidding, it's fine, I had some relaxing moments there too ;) And long live sink-holes..

The Vidago Palace hotel stood up to its reputation! Amazing! My wife and I stayed there 3 nights, perfect for a restful, very high quality stay! The staff are very welcoming, the food is truly excellent and the architecture of the Hotel breathtaking! Even during the covid crisis the Vidago Palace and it’s team masters the restrictions/requirements with an elegant and respectful way! If you have the opportunity you must dine at the Hotel’s Grand Ballroom Salão Nobre restaurant with live piano entertainment on Friday’s and Saturday’s! The food is amazing! The chefs go to very great lengths to find wonderful menus with delicious tasteful dishes! Clearly worth a detour! Enjoy the wonderful sights, sents, 18 hole Golf Course and service in this Grand Hotel!

On august 28th 2020 we decided to end our vacation at Vidago Palace, willing to find great service and better rest. Apart from the staff's kindness, nothing else is to reccomend: - Junior Suite 110 with several maintenance issues (inadmissible in a 5* hotel, paying 525€/night) - Having booked (as per Reception's request) breakfast for 10h45 upon checkin, at 09h50 the Housekeeing team was already jumping into our room (lovely) - Breakfast was a terrible experince every step of the way: poor quality of products, poor selection of bread/pastry/charcuterie/cheese/jams... no freshly squeezed orange juice, pre-cooked eggs of all sort that were presented in plastic trays and served cold (what else to wish for?) Having initially booked the Junior Suite for two nights we decided to check-out at 12h after the first night since it was a nightmare to even think of the 2nd one. We called Reception, we advised on what we were doing, we suggested to keep the 2nd night's amount as credit for better days of the hotel - but we didn't push and we mentioned that we would leave anyway. The only answer we had to everything reported to them was that their cancellation policy is not to grant anything in this situation - which led us to wonder about what it is that actually makes them take action on Clients... No management around, just a shallow 'See you next time!' - well, maybe not. Having asked for the Director's e-mail, the best shot was the Head of Reception's email who, 6 days after having received our email with this report didn't even bother to write us back - so much for the 5* service. And well, after waiting for an answer and without any sign of interest from Vidago's Management Team, we decided to provide a public service by preventing other Clients from having this experince at this lovely place that once shone. Good luck Vidago Palace.
