Staying at The Postmasters Lodgings is like visiting a vaguely eccentric distant relative who has spent his life collecting fine wines, books and furniture. The BnB itself is a glorious house of comfortable beds, overstuffed sofas and a deck area that could be a set from a Merchant Ivory film if it wasn't for the breathtaking view over the Hokianga.... Rawene maybe somewhat off the usual tourist track and if at all it's probably seen as the ferry landing only. However the town is lovely with several historic buildings and a nice quiet place to stay a night. Postmasters Lodgings is just across the ferry in a beautiful large building and looks somewhat like a museum from the inside. John... More

Great find. John and Dorothy were delightful hosts. The book collection and antiques make for interesting conversations. The bedroom was spacious and clean. The sitting room with TV and leather sofas was a great spot to sit, read and chat. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and we were given many delicious options. So relaxing with wine, dinner and the next... More

Quaint, curious and enchanting... Serendipitous discovery that was great fun... Sipping wine on the veranda with engaging hosts ... You can book a small meal in advance for supper. The fish and chip shop across the road closes at 18:30 and the pub isn't serving food at the mo. Take your own bottle of wine unless you like trying John's... More

Getting to the lodgings is a bit of a mission, as there are steep steeps going up to the house. But once inside it's like stepping back in time. Delightful photos and furniture reminded me of my great grandparents house. John the genial host loves company, and is willing to chat. The room had a queen sized bed, plenty of... More

Stayed just one night......funny wee town where strangers stand out..reminded us of some backwater where everyone's related. Room was cluttered....bed was hard and uncomfortable. ..cobwebs and dust in the room and outside were the stand out feature....certainly not the tidy place we saw on the brochure! Next time would catch the ferry and escape!!

A lot of people from all over the world visit or even live in Rawene so I'm not sure you can say it's a place where strangers stand out, unless you are indeed very strange! Strange strangers with the right attitude are very welcome up here. Yes the cleaning was an issue, we were short of hands. Sorry about that.... More

I cannot recommend this highly enough. The room was luxurious and quaint. Artwork and decorations helped to make the space welcoming and relaxed. At all times I was made to feel welcome. The Postmistress' breakfast (full cooked) was yummy. A nice way to start the day.

We stayed 2 nights at Postmasters Lodging and enjoyed the quirky charm, uniqueness and different experience. John and Dorothy are friendly and entertaining and John has a very good wine cellar and loves a chat. Rawene is very small but plenty to look at with the coming and goings of the ferry and short drive to the Hokianga harbour area.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Postmasters Lodgings in order to attend a wedding nearby. The place was the most beautiful house I have ever seen! It was decorated Art Nouveau style. The walls and the velvet curtains were teal blue colour. Our bedroom had a four-poster bed, and full of beautiful wooden furniture. The house was full of... More
