- golf course - the greens were not maintained properly and the golfers were disappointed at the standard of maintenance. Their comment - "certainly not of international standard".
- villa check-in reception - the staff at the reception were totally useless. They saw our cars coming and stopping in front of them. They saw us (girls) unloading luggage and didn't offer to help. They just sat inside and watched. After we unloaded and went in to the counter, then they told us that we can take the cars directly to the villa to unload. Why couldn't they have come and told us when they saw us struggling with the lugggage? So, we had to re-load all the luggage in our cars again - and once again, they didn't even help us.
- villa - very basic. Patio not very clean. Overlooking a lovely lake, but there was rubbish in the lake. TV not working. When we called the maintenance guy - he couldn't solve the problem. Some of the electrical sockets in the room also didn't work.
- sports facilities - this was the most SHOCKING.
(a) we asked for a tennis coach since they seemed to be a "Tennis Academy". He was on leave. Asked for him the next morning - he only comes in at 1 pm (too late since we are checking out). Most disappointing.
(b) we wanted to play badminton. We went to the pro shop to book and get rackets and shuttlecocks. THIS WAS MY WORST EXPERIENCE IN A HOTEL. The lady at the counter was unhelpful, slow, and unfriendly. She gave us shuttlecocks that were SO OLD and IN SUCH BAD CONDITION that it was shameful. When I asked for new ones - she said (in a very unfriendly tone) that they were the only ones that the coach / manager had given her. I asked her to tell the coach / manager that the guests (i.e. ourselves) would like to complain about the condition of the shuttlecocks. We were not scolding her - but just asking her to pass a message along to management. Instead of agreeing to do so, she began to SHOUT AT ME. Can you imagine, a hotel staff SHOUTING at a guest. I was amazed. I told her to stop shouting at me - but instead she yelled "I AM NOT SHOUTING AT YOU. I ALREADY TOLD YOU THESE ARE THE ONLY SHUTTLECOCKS". Amazing behaviour. I couldn't believe it. There should be NO circumstances at all where a staff of a hotel can shout at a guest.
(c) swimming pool - the site and pool are lovely but poorly maintained. The toilet in the changing room couldn't flush. The swimming pool was full of leaves. The deck chairs were not clean and in a very old and poor condition. The floor of the swimming pool was full of sand.
So, it gets an average rating from me because the site and surroundings are lovely, but spoilt by bad service and maintenance.
However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the room I stayed in spacious, and everything in good working condition, but most importantly it had a great view overlooking a serene and beautiful lake.
Although I stayed for only one night, I had a chance to pay a quick visit to some of the sports facilities which would definitely keep me and my daughters busy over a weekend. I would bring my family here on my next trip for sure. Ashame I do not play golf as the course seemed inviting.
After my business meeting, I headed to the Lakeside Terrace for dinner and had some seafood pasta which was yummy, while breakfast was pretty basic but acceptable. Some local flavours like nasi lemak and an egg station would be a nice and welcomed addition.
There are some common areas which have been upgraded by Clearwater and others that are being looked into from what I can see. I am sure once they have completed their refurbishments and add on a few personal touches, it would make it popular getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The pictures featured is totally not close to the real horrible experience when we had paid for 3 villas full of bugs n dirt... Look so haunted !! Lake water was garbage n smelly ...no activities were available or working for the kids!
Hotel was by far the worst living with zero management . Pool slide broke n pool water was smelly n murky. We couldn't even stay for an hour there n they refused to refund even $1 when we feedback to their manager . Wasted our Long drive there from Singapore n wasted $$$$.
Had lunch in the clubhouse restaurant on 20th December 2013. The restaurant, and whole complex generally, is slightly shabby and forlorn. At 1pm, albeit on a weekday, there was only one other table occupied. There were no waiters around - we had to go and find one. The menu is standard Malaysian club food of Asian and Western staple dishes : fried rice, fried noodles, soup noodles, burgers, fish and chips, etc. We had the fried kway teow and kway teow soup - both of which were fine but nothing special. Fresh fruit juices were good.
On finishing lunch we walked over to the waterside chalets. Past the totally empty driving range, tennis courts and carpark, not a single person or car in sight, is the hotel reception tent - on this day staffed by 3 employees - the most people we'd seen all day. On being asked to see a hotel room, one of the reception staff got up as if she was about to show us, however Anna without looking up from her computer stopped her and refused - insisting that every room was fully occupied. Its no wonder really that you're deserted !
The chalets are very big - we took two adjoining ones, and both had large bedrooms (enough for a king size bed, a single sofa cum bed, large built in cupboards, surfaces for your bags) - and still had enough place to run around in.
The bathrooms are also really big - ours had a huge (at least 3 foot high) clay pot (tempayan) for collecting water in to bathe, should you not want to use the shower, and clear glass panes at the top of the outer wall, so you can see trees above you as you shower.
The rooms are a little the worse for wear - could do with some refurbishment to the furniture and fittings. The bathroom looks like half has been done up, with the more modern 3 feet by 1 foot large bathroom tiles, and a shiny new marble looking counter for the sink, but the shower half still has those tiny 1 cm square tiles, some of which were missing, and others stained. And the shower curtain was just a flimsy white-in-most-places plastic sheet which had a 5 inch rip along one border.
Just changing all the tiles, and putting in a shower partition would make such a difference. The hot water was really hot, and ample, though.
Someone mentioned in another review the ancient hairdryer provided - haven't seen one of those in ages, and yes, the amount of heat wouldn't have dried the hairs of a fly!
But all these little imperfections are simply wiped out by the atmosphere there! Each chalet has a little balcony with wooden benches running on three sides. Ours overlooked the lake, which had lots of water lilies near the shore, and you could just sit there and look out at the beautiful, calming view. There were lots of different bird calls to listen to, as well as the odd "plop" in the water as fishes did their thing in the lake.
There are lots of activities to be had - they have bicycles parked near the badminton court, of various sizes. This is the only hotel I have been to where you are just supposed to pick a bicycle, cycle around as you wish, and return it when you are done! No forms to fill, or signatures to sign, or money to pay! Of course, these are not competition standard, spanking new bikes - but they are more than adequate to cycle around,
They have 2 open air tennis courts, and some which have a sports-stadium like cover. Again, you just borrow the rackets and balls you need, play, and then return them! Probably the same thing for the badminton, which has an indoor hall. There is also fishing and boating on the lake.
The swimming pools are very nice, although the tiles were a little slippery.
Breakfast was included, and was a little basic. There was fried mihun, fried rice, baked beans, sausages, hash browns, rice porridge, watermelon, and some white bread. There was also an egg station. The coffee and tea were both really watery and cold when we went for breakfast at around 9. And there was no juice, so kids could only have water. Surely one juice wouldn't have been too much to ask for?
There was a restaurant staff who was excellent. Maznah came forward smilingly to greet all the guests who walked in, and took everyone's egg order, which she relayed to the egg chef. She also cheerfully carried off the pot of cold coffee, and brought back a new one with piping hot (albeit still watery) coffee when I asked if it would be possible to get some hot coffee.. They would have done better to just have put out some Nescafe packs and tea bags, and hot water!
It's a great place to holiday, especially if you have kids, but you must not expect 4 star perfection. A lot more could be done to make the place outstanding both inside and out, but for now, if you go with modest expectations, then you will be really happy!
Needs more than an A4 sheet to list all the faults..... here are just a few....
Food is disappointing - As I was the only diner.... I asked the chef to come to my table and asked him " what are you best at cooking ? His replied "pasta" ..... Gee my 12 year old can cook pasta.
The rooms are not properly cleaned.
There are notices in the grounds about " Put rubbish in the bins" But so much rubbish is dropped.
The driving range has 2 floating markers - 100 yards and 50 yards which have drifted up and were on the shore. Can't anyone see these and pull them out ?
Too many staff seem to sit around chatting and dont get up when a customer walks in
My Ipoh friend sat for 10 minutes at 12.30 waiting for a waiter/waitress - nobody came.
The only change I noticed was they now have a man at the entrance to the chalets who open and closes a bar for the traffic. Is he really needed ? One day I was the only resident so he had to be there from 6 am until I returned just to lift the bar. Personally I think he could be better employed doing a proper job.
I went to use the computer in the Games Room and found 2 members of staff e mailing friends. They disn't even bother to move. Yet the 2 very polite Pakistani waiters you employ told me staff not allowed to us those computers.
As I have stayed in hotels in 82 countries I can see in an instant what is needed - VERY STRONG and EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT . Writing a response 5 months after a guest moans below is not right - needs to be done within say max 2 days.
I wish Clearwater success - but I have a feeling it will not happen, which is a great shame as the setting is spectacular, and many S'pore + KL +Penang hotels would die for such a location.
Its a lack of income that I guess is holding them back, so anyone with deep pockets " APPLY HERE ! "
Golf course is nice but no more than that, and overprized. Par 3 course very nice for kids, but not maintained in a long time. Extreme wild boar damage, scruffy greens.
There is a lot of stuff to do for everyone, but on the whole I found it all overprized. Can get better value for money at Lumut, or Kijal for instance.
Wont go there again.

He also went out of his way to arrange a private dinner for us at the Clubhouse with a complimentary soup and dessert after as well.
All the staff were extremely friendly and polite, our rooms were very clean, and we had fun using the pool and riding bikes around the Sanctuary. We saw otters, monkeys and monitor lizards on our walks.
The chalets were very peaceful next to the lake with breath taking scenery and absolute tranquility. Although slightly rundown in minor places - it was still very comfortable and more than adequate for our needs.
It is a shame not more people frequent this sanctuary - I think it is still one of the lost gems of Ipoh to be appreciated while still there, and with Managers like Sathis Soleman I'm sure all guests will be treated like kings and queens.
