We pulled into the park at 8pm and the ranger pointed us to Matthews arm Campground - should still be a lot of sites available. We got there and selected a site without a problem. However, we had two tents and there wasn't really enough room (B83). We managed it though. The facilities were clean and convenient. We wished we... More

One couple made woopie at 2am, 20 campsites discussed hearing it over coffee in the morning. Seems some of the children thought it had been a racoon. Point being, the campsites are quite close together. Good for a get together or boyscout troop. Not so great if you're trying to get away from it all. We went because they accept... More

My wife and I stayed here to watch the leaves change and hike to Overall Run Falls. Being the northern most campsite on Skyline drive, they still had sites available and are also conveniently located just a couple miles away from Elkwallow Wayside (which carries supplies and has a small restaurant inside). Check in was very easy since we booked... More

We wanted to come see Shenandoah so we decided to camp here. Our spot was at the end of a row so we had plenty of privacy. There are some trails that start at or near this campground but not many that allowed dogs so we ended up driving the next day to see more of the park and find... More

This campground is empty when the park is empty and it is full when the park is full. Anyone who came to a developed campground and expected a secluded weekend is foolish beyond belief. If you want to the campground to be empty then come when the park is empty. If you want secluded then you backpack to the back... More

One of the reviews said that there was a lot of security and they felt like they were spied on. Those security officers were park police and if they didn't want to be spied upon then they should light their weed up somewhere else.

Every spot at the campground is completely open and extremely close to each other. There is exceptional traffic through the loop through the day and night due to the security officers that prowl on guests. If you like being harrased for trying to enjoy a simple quite weekend with your girlfriend than this is the place for you. There was... More

Matthews Arm Campground is the only campsite in the north district of Shenandoah National Park. The campground has individual campsites, group campsites, and some accommodations for RVs. Many of the campsites are first-come, first-served, but a few can be reserved. We stayed here as a group in the summer on four individual sites. The sites are a little close together... More

We camped at the campground in July with one other couple. The location is not far from DC (just 2-3 hours), and it had some beautiful vistas on the way in. The campground itself is wooded and does not have any views. Check-in was easy and we ended up buying firewood as we were told it would be hard to... More

I've camped here off and on for the past 10 years but only because the kids love to go to Luray Caverns. If you're able to go during the week, then it's better but the weekends here seem to be party time for the DC populace who want to have a weekend adventure. None of the usual rules are respected...
