We flew in by seaplane and went straight out on boat looking for wildlife. Lovely wild area. The cabins are simple but very comfortable. The staff are lovely and very helpful. The food is fantastic. You eat and travel round with the other guests (10 in total) which was great fun with lots of laughter and lots of help from keen photographers. We had two full days there and a half day at the start and at the end of our trip. All very efficient in terms of the hotel in Kodiak and the pick up transport to the seaplane etc.

Great nature retreat watching the bears was an amazing experience, food was great the chef and his staff do a wonderful job, has a bar which was also fun to sit around the lodge and relax. I high recommend this for everyone if you fish its even better experience. Truly an amazing place cabin accommodations were good too even though you don't spend much time in there because you want to see all the bears we saw 15 different ones ones in all. Love this place

Response from Katmai-Wilderness, Manager at Katmai Wilderness Lodge

Hi Gale, I think you may have mistaken us for another lodge, as we do not fish and do not have a bar (although we serve beer and wine). We are located on the coast of Katmai closer to Kodiak Island. I'm sure the other lodge would love to have the nice review :-) Sincerely, Katmai Wilderness Lodge

I visited in late August 2019 in a year when there had been higher than usual temps all summer and droughts, which affected how many animals were around to view and photograph. And I still saw amazing wildlife: bears fishing for salmon; a curious and gregarious wolf who came close to check us humans out; sea otters tumbling; harbor seals slumbering; eagles staring us down from high perches; a moose swimming from island to island; even a humpback whale coming closer inland to feed. The Lodge is a lovely comfortable serene place to spend several days and get to know fellow wildlife afficionados. They also were wonderfully solicitous of my father who had limited mobility and despite not being able to join hikes, he enjoyed the boat viewings of wildlife and had a very good time and got lots of great nature photos. This is NOT a place for people with very limited mobility, however; this is the wilds of Alaska and they can realistically only do so much to accommodate guests. But they did what they could throughout our visit and I very much appreciated that. I'm glad that the funds we spent here go toward expanding the Katmai National Park and help many people enjoy and want to contribute to conserving and enjoying this wonderful wild area of the U.S.

Angela and Perry offer a very warm welcome when your float plane arrives at the KWL. Greg, the chef does an excellent job in providing delicious meals in the middle of nowhere! Comfortable cabins. Morning and afternoon you are offered the chance to go out and see the truly magnificent wilderness (glaciers, mountains and coastal inlets) where you will see brown bears, bald eagles, otters, sea lions, horned puffins, cormorants, gulls and every kind of coastal seabird you could think of. Jake and Perry can quickly identify the mammal or bird but can also get the boats up close to the wildlife so that you can take wonderful photos. It is the trip of a lifetime and it is such a wonderful experience staying in the pristine wilderness with a good level of comfort.

Our stay at Katmai Wilderness Lodge exceeded all of our expectations. The owners, Angela and Perry, run a very special place and you can tell that they truly care about delivering a memorable experience to their guests. Each day we were taken on tours of the surrounding wilderness and viewed several bears, otters, eagles and a wolf. A few bears even passed through the lodge's property. Unlike safari tours we have been on in Africa, we did not run into any other tour groups while out on our excursions, allowing for great photos. We only saw one other boat the entire time we were there. The rooms are rustic but very comfortable considering the remote location, we had no problems with hot water or heat. The food was excellent. All of the other guests at the lodge were repeat customers, a testament to how great it is. We look forward to visiting again.
