Stayed 2 nights in January (B&B). A special thank you to Grant who assisted with our booking as on this occasion we required a walk in shower following recent surgery. We were in the River Suite which allowed for easy access etc. I do think that attention to detail is required with regards to housekeeping & maintenance. It was unfortunate that we were 26mins after 10am (the cut off) when requesting to have our room "made up" during our stay, returning to a pile of towels & toiletries sitting outside our room. Breakfast service excellent, good choice of cooked options. We chose to eat out locally each evening.

Had one overnight stay here and not impressed. On arrival , we were given Room 11, which as soon as we entered could hear a loud whirring noise, this turned out to be coming from a fan located just outside the window which went into kitchen below, we asked to be moved and were relocated in room 6, this room was much larger and had a nice view over the river but decor really tired. There were a few issues within the room such as: The mattress on the left side of the bed sagged. The bedside lamps constantly buzzed when switched on The water pressure in shower was really bad unless you wanted a cold shower Constant running water noise from towel rail in bathroom which we eventually had to turn off. We were supposed to have a welcome glass of Prosecco on arrival but had to ask for this when we went into bar before dinner, this came absolutely flat and we had to ask for this to be changed. We had dinner in the hotel and found the male in charge of restaurant quite rude in his manner , although the two ladies serving were lovely. When I raised the issues of room 6 on checking out, receptionist seemed a bit unhappy that points were being raised and stated that this was one of the upgraded rooms and that no previous complaints(If this was one of the better rooms I'm glad I wasn't in a basic room. Overall, very disappointing and hotel decor really tired looking. Plus points: Very good breakfast. Lovely cheery woman serving in dining room.

The reason I’m writing the review is the food at the Ballathie House is outstanding. Our group booked a table for four so we had a good understanding (share) of the flavours presented on the menu. The meal started with a chicken liver amuse bouch-spectacular. I had the game terrine which was beautifully presented, my wife had a beetroot and goats cheese salad-stunning. Mains was a perfectly cooked duck breast, red wine jus and duck leg confit donut! The sea bass with crab bisk was also impressive, light and fresh. But the desserts were perfection. The chocolate orange fondant and the banana mouse and soft sorbet were intense. The chef should be working in Edinburgh and running a top restaurant. Ten times better than the Witchery hotel on the Royal mile! A cute little Scottish castle hotel on the River Tee. Apart from the traditional stags heads and stuffed trout in cases above every door, which is atmospheric, did I mention the tartan carpet….? Also totally atmospheric! The bedrooms are simple and comfortable. The money is spent were it counts. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

3 stars because the General Manager came and resolved our issue however this still grates with me how poor our stay was. We had booked rooms in the main house, which our confirmation stated. We were placed into an exterior building that was nothing like what the photos of the rooms we booked presented. The rooms we had were of awful taste - bedding had throws from something out of 1940’s, along with curtains and the bathroom Was like something out of the 70’s. We believe that due to a wedding being booked that they had placed the wedding within the main house, which is fair enough however these types of bookings should be blocked off on Booking.com so that people do not drive 3 hours expecting the rooms within the main house that they had actually booked and paid for. We did not enjoy our stay here at all. I felt it imperative to publish a review as whoever owns this hotel needs to learn a lesson from this. I wouldn’t re visit but kudos to the GM for reducing the rate and being so humble in his approach. Unfortunately one of our party was very upset which is understandable so without that GM I don’t think we would have resolved the issue we had.

We had a wonderful stay. The food was out of this world. My husband has an illness which makes it difficult to swallow and has got used to bland, soft food. The chef went out of his way to produce a delicious main course for him that met his needs exactly and made it a fantastic 5 star experience for him. The staff couldn’t have been more attentive without being obtrusive. We had our dog with us who absolutely loved exploring the grounds. I can’t recommend Ballathie enough and can’t wait to go back.
