Having visited for drinks regularly recently we decided to try the food. A lovely hot evening and sitting outside was a delight unlike the service or food. The "waiter" needs a course in customer service and the chef needs to retrain. The 3 bean chilli had no chilli worth speaking of and the fishermans platter was a portion of tasteless... More

Two reasonable meals out of four. Lasagne inedible, garlic prawns were floating in grease without any flavour of garlic. Scampi not fully cooked. Salad accompaniment was unimaginative to say the least. Bar service was variable with spirits which had not been ordered added to bill on one occasion. Never saw any sign of management, complaints were not followed up, no... More

Have always promised to give the place a try as the food always looks good when we've had a drink. No need to book as the recent extension means they can serve sittings of up to 150. We had lunch though in the very traditional bar and found the menu was varied and had a good selection and the bar... More

We popped into the Fishermans Return one afternoon after a day trip out, for a pint and enjoyed it and vowed to return for a meal. We stayed the night in the thatched cottages at Hermanus and walked down to the pub around 6.30. We did not feel very welcome on arrival, no one looked up from the bar to... More

The pub is very welcoming and situated in very pretty surroundings with views of thatched cottages and pretty gardens. The food here was delicious, and we didn't have to wait too long. The staff were friendly and helpful and even made our dog feel welcome by giving him a biscuit.

Called last night for dinner just before 6.0 and was amazed to find the car park almost to capacity. Knowing that this pub doesn't take reservations we thought our chance of getting a table were remote. Happily this wasn't the case as it turned out there was a function on, the bar was busy but we managed to find a... More

Dear Glenn N Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of the Fishermans Return and I am pleased that you enjoyed your meal. Apologies are sent regarding the missing lemon with your calamari starter; this was an oversight that should not have happened and your observation/suggestion that the chocolate sauce with the Chocolate Lumpy Bumpy has been... We dined in the Fishermans having heard from locals, that a change in ownership had also changed the level of service/quality. One person said, you get mostly a plate full of salad, with your main. We thought we would check it out for ourselves, having enjoyed meals there before. Well it was ok, but just ok. Plates were overburdened with... More

Dear Scroby99 On seeing the title of your review I was at first, confused. The Fishermans Return has been under the same ownership since 2009 and business has been growing ever since so much so that a new extension was necessary that opened in June 2015 and has created much needed extra space. Unfortunately not everyone likes a successful business... More

We came here 3 days in a row to this lovely village pub. Family friendly, good food and lots of seating. The service was acceptable, could have been warmer and more personal. But overall, a good pub in walking distance from our accommodation and the beach .

Hello Rurh J Thank you for taking the time to leave your review of the Fishermans Return. We pride ourselves on being a family and canine friendly village pub and the extension, that has been operational for 1 year this month, has provided much needed extra seating. We strive to deliver good quality hearty food with pleasant, friendly welcoming service... More

A change of ownership has brought a large canteen like extension and the aim of the new owner seems to be to make money out of tourists. The beer was very expensive and the pub packed on a Saturday evening but virtually empty during the week. A local we spoke to said most locals didn't go in there any more.

Dear Roxyhwfa Thank you for your review albeit perplexing. The Fishermans Return has been under the same ownership since 2009, the extension, that has created much needed extra space due to the rise in business, opened in June 2015 and the permanent non seasonal workforce has been increased. Unfortunately a successful business can cause unnecessary problems which can lead to... More

Having visited this pub in previous years whilst staying in the village on holiday, the last time being 2014 until our return last week, I have to say that whilst the large extension has made the place a lot more spacious, I think that sadly it is just not the same place and has lost its charm. The meals are... More

Dear Insight59 Sorry your return visit did not replicate what you remembered from 2014 but apart from the new extension that has created much needed extra space, nothing has changed. The Fishermans Return is still a freehouse, been under the same ownership since 2009, the original bar and lounge area has not altered and our food is homemade and cooked... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Welcome to the Fishermans Return. A 300 year old brick and flint Freehouse situated in the picturesque unspoilt Norfolk village of Winterton-on-Sea. Long stretches of sandy beaches and beautiful walks are all within a few minutes of the pub. We serve up to five real ales as well as Westons Old Rosie Cider. Our food is freshly prepared and we use locally sourced ingredients where we can. Being close to the sea, fish naturally features prominently on our specials board. Well behaved dogs are most welcome. ... more   less
