I arrived at this guest house from XiZhou to find the village of Shaxi completely blocked off to cars - not to worry, the hotel owner arrived in a puff of smoke with a tuc-tuc to carry my luggage and me through the hotel front door and into the beautiful courtyard. They helped me work out how to hike up to the grotto on the hillside just outside the village (go past the gas station and turn left are all the instructions you need!) and then on the final day helped me continue my journey through beautiful Yunnan. Stay here and they'll keep you on the right path.
The double rooms were small but this wasn't a problem for me as a solo traveller. Very tastefully decorated (with electric blankets). Showers took a while to heat up as the water had a long way to travel. All the rooms overlooked the courtyard below. I never saw anyone eat there so not sure if they serve food but regardless, there are lots of eateries nearby. Two good markets to visit on Fridays; the animal one over the bridge and the local one. Stayed 3 nights in Shaxi - could have stayed longer.
This is an atmospheric period style guesthouse with a beautiful courtyard in an alley just a short walk away from the main square. We booked a suite because the double rooms were a little small. This gave us plenty of room as we had a spacious bedroom and sitting room as well as a nice bathroom. Note that there were no English speaking staff, no heating and no TV. There was an electric blanket - which we really needed!
We stayed here in April 2017 and had the Double Room. I'm not convinced that the 25m2 size indicated on booking.com for this room is accurate though. We did go there knowing that the rooms would be smaller so we weren't surprised or disappointed. Located just around the corner from the main square and on a quiet street, the timber building is beautifully carved. It’s a boutique guest house that is single-handedly run by the owner. The rooms as mentioned, are on the petite side with just enough passage between the foot of the bed and the wall. There was just a bit more space between the bed and the window, but that didn’t really pose an issue - we weren't planning to spend all day in the room! It was comfortable, cosy and there was seating space both inside and on the balcony. The bed was soft and comfortable and the bathroom lovely. We liked our stay at Water Inn and felt that we made the right choice, though a night’s stay would probably be sufficient.…
We stayed two nights in this guesthouse, which is situated in an alley close to the market place of Shaxi. This beautiful courtyard houses a couple of rooms, but just after the Chinese holidays, we were the only guests. Our room was clean and comfortable. The bed was in good Chinese tradition hard as a rock and the friendly lady of the reception offered us to switch to a room with a softer mattress. We declined, because we don't mind a hard mattress but the offer was really appreciated. Overall a great stay!
