Catos is a wonderful place to stay in Shaxi. The building is beautiful with an open courtyard and the rooms are spotlessly clean, bright, airy and luxurious. The bed is incredibly comfortable and there are lots of thoughtful added extras that make the stay even more special; tea and coffee making facilities in the room including English Breakfast Tea :), electric blankets, toiletries, even a heater for the colder months which we did not find anywhere else in Yunnan (and it really is cold in the winter in December when we were there!). The buffet breakfast is also delicious, absolutely the best we have had in China! The couple that run the place are lovely too. I really recommend staying on Catos if you choose to visit this lovely sleepy little town.

We really enjoyed our stay at Cato's Inn. The rooms are very light and extremely well kept and clean. They also provide you with sunflower seeds, nescafe, teabags and a kettle in the room, which made us feel very welcome. The location is great: close to the river, close to the central square. The excellent breakfast was a real pleasure for us after having only had Chinese buns and rice porridge for some mornings....

Shaxi is a sleepy place to wander after a long day seeing temples, and catos is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the view of farmland, river, and peaceful mountains. The owners are a friendly couple from Beijing who (obviously) love cats, but this premise doesn't cheapen the hotel or make it cute and annoying. Rather, it's a sweet place with simply well decorated rooms and nice porches where you can sit and enjoy a cup of tea with the beautiful landscape. An extra bonus is a home cooked breakfast including homemade yogurt by the owners.

We were not expecting much for our one night stay at Cato's - we were moving from Tiger Leaping Gorge to DalI - and we were delighted by this pleasant surprise in Shaxi. Cato and his wife, Nancy, moved from Beijing to open this inn a few years ago, and they are doing a very nice job. The inn is well located, just a half-block from the historic square (Sideng) in the center of this partially restored ancient village, but the village is small and blissfully quiet compared to Lijiang or Dali so this was perfect. The rooms were comfortable and clean with a decent bathroom and plenty of hot water. The rooms surround a nice courtyard with rustic seating, perfect for an afternoon visit with the owners and a few other guests.

As other guests have noted, the owners communicate well in English (Nancy somewhat better than Cato), and they were both friendly and helpful. They have recently opened a "fusion" restaurant down the block, and Nancy presented a solid choice of Western and local options, including freshly-baked bread and delicious homemade yoghurt.

We were lucky to be in Shaxi on a Friday, which is market day for the town and the surrounding region and provided our best market experience in all of China. In addition to the more typical street market offering food and necessities, we crossed the river to observe the livestock market featuring horses, donkeys, cattle and pigs. It was fascinating to watch the animated wheeling and dealing among the local Bai and Yi farmers.

All in all, we felt that Cato's was an excellent choice and a very good value in a village we were glad to have visited, if only for one night.

Shaxi is a delightful, quaint town and one day was not enough to explore and enjoy its charms. The hotel is 2 min walk to the old square and theatre. Our room was large, lovely furnishings and clean with a small private balcony.
But what was special were the owners (excellent English) and how much they helped us in a difficult situation. Unfortunately our ongoing travel arrangements fell through. Even though we had already checked out, the owner came and found us in the town car park. For the next hour he stayed with us, made numerous phone calls, translated and helped us find a driver and accomodation. Many thanks once again!

Our family with 2 young kids stayed here in late December and were so comfortable. The best part was that the rooms were warm - they definitely take comfort seriously! The showers were hot, the rooms had electric blankets and oil heaters, and extra duvets were provided just in case.
The breakfast was lovely and a highlight of our day, especially the coffee with milk heated on the woodstove.
The hotel was bright and nicely decorated. We borrowed bikes and used the washing machine at no cost. The staff were very friendly and helped us organize day trips and transport back to Lijiang.
The only negative was that the bathroom could use a bit of renovating.

Friendly owners and clean, comfortable rooms for a reasonable price. Bikes available to use for free. Their cats are adorable and you can buy postcards of them. They recommended lunch at Jiajia and it was one of my favorite meals of the trip - must try the braised pork and steamed eggplant!
