A very nice family operated boutique hotel, that boasts large traditional rooms with modern bathrooms and all the amenities you would need. Many rooms come with a private terrace. Nice Chinese breakfast, and fresh-leave tea is available in your room. There are about 7 cats roaming the premises. Taxis are not allowed in this part of the Old City, but the main road is only a 5 minute walk away.
The owners are very welcoming. The hotel has a lovely garden and few cats. Beds are comfy and rooms are sufficient. The receptionist lady speacks English and can help you out. You are just few steps away from the main place of the village. If you like horse ridding there is different path options which start near by the bridge. Or you can just rent a ebike or walk around . :-) They also know a very good restaurant just ask them. All the staff was super attentive to my parents, they even offered a free upgraded room on the second night. Very good location where you just feel like home. Thanks for everything :-)
The village is very relaxed due in part to the absence of traffic. Cato’s Inn is a beautiful, well run hotel in the centre of this charming, interesting village. Nancy and Cato ( siblings) are excellent hosts , able and happy to share the best points of Shaxi. We would have been very happy to stay for longer.
With a perfect location in the old city just by the square and close to the stone bridge, with big and clean rooms, terraces to sit and relax, free tea and coffee, many restaurants and coffee shops nearby and English speaking owners... A paradise to long to return.
Shaxi is a delightful, quaint town and one day was not enough to explore and enjoy its charms. The hotel is 2 min walk to the old square and theatre. Our room was large, lovely furnishings and clean with a small private balcony. But what was special were the owners (excellent English) and how much they helped us in a difficult situation. Unfortunately our ongoing travel arrangements fell through. Even though we had already checked out, the owner came and found us in the town car park. For the next hour he stayed with us, made numerous phone calls, translated and helped us find a driver and accomodation. Many thanks once again!
Shaxi is a village that exists in another time! The old buildings and narrow lane ways have maximum charm factor and the frenzy of Dali is far away. Cato's Inn provides large comfortable rooms with lovely views across the river to the fields and mountains beyond. The upper floor has a balcony on which to sit and soak up the views. There is also a quiet courtyard with table and chairs. There are bicycles available at no charge and maps are provided so one can cycle the river paths to other villages. No breakfast was offered at the time we were there but the dining room was open for coffee, tea and snacks compliments of the house. Nancy speaks excellent English and provided information and recommendations for restaurants and onward travel. The inn is not luxurious but rooms are comfortable with good space, accessories, and quiet. Great location in the village and excellent value. The village is pedestrian only. Cato's was close to our Landscape shuttle arrival point from Dali but we left on the normal Xiaguan shuttle. Nancy drove our bags to the pick up point so we did not have to contend with the cobblestones and hill. The atmosphere in the town is relaxed and a world away from tourist chaos.…
We just slept one night in Cato’s Inn, we had a 2nd floor room. The room was clean and quiet in such a charming environment. The warm welcome, the charm and the peaceful environment overwhelm you and make you leave all troubles outside. For one night and one great breakfast we enjoyed the simple pleasure of life. Thanks for the great stay.
I've nothing but good things to say about my stay at Cato' s Inn. A summary of its good points: - comfortable room that is equipped with room heating, toilet heat lamp - lovely seats outside each room to have a cup of tea and enjoy the day - able to help ourselves to coffee/tea throughout the day at the dining room - great attention to detail. Body lotion and liquid detergent available in the room; shampoo, conditioner, shower gel provided; laundry corner with washing machines and a line drying area at no additional charge. - free usage of their mountain bikes - provided a simple diagram of shaxi and surrounding area, which was adequate as reference for us - helpful and friendly owners (we did speak mandarin though, so not too sure if they may be communication problem in english) - and of course, the delightful cats! Shaxi was wonderful and we eventually decided to stay another night at Cato's Inn. It may be slightly pricer than other places but it's still good value for money. note that the transport from Dali Landscape hotel to Shaxi still exists, and that Cato Inn is a very short walk from the drop off point in Shaxi. …
Only stayed here one night which was no way near enough. The owners were very helpful, collecting us and our luggage from the nearby car park. The rooms were extremely well appointed, very large and comfortable bed, fabulous shower and bathroom, large and spacious room. We also had our own terrace too and there is a very nice garden to spend time in and relax. Our room had great views over the old town out to the mountains and there was good mosquito control on all windows, which was useful as well. Breakfast was ace with great coffee and choice. The inn is very close to good restaurants and bars. They have free bikes (very good quality and well maintained too) to use and we went out for a three hour cycle around the local countryside and hills, very pleasant. Wish we had stayed longer, hopefully we will be back.…
We were here on our China trip as a family of five. We really enjoyed our stay and were almost sad to stay only one night. The personal is nice and speaks English sufficiently. The rooms are big and very nice - the have everything we might have needed, including brand Shampoo and Conditioner in the nice, big showers. The breakfast was very good with freshly ground coffee and a good choice and quantity. We would definitely recommend it.
