Detailed Reviews
Check in is at 2pm. We arrived slightly before 1pm and provided our passport to the front office staff, who checked against the system and told us to come back 2pm and to provide our passports again when we are checking in. This is quite different from the other hotels which we have stayed during this trip, who usually would just give us a ticket to collect our keys when it is time for check in.
There is a free coffee machine which is available for guest from 1pm to 7pm. Coffee is good when compared to some of the coffee we bought at the convenient stores.
Staff is friendly and speak basic English.
Location of the hotel is good as it is just next to the Canal City shopping mall. Lots of eateries and convenient stores around the hotel and the Yatai (street food along the river) is not too far away. The hotel is about a 10-minute walk to the Hakata station.
Considering the location and convenience, the price we paid for the room is considered reasonable.
Do note that the hotel does not provide a safe in the room. You will need to go to the front office to put your valuable in the safe.
Other than that we had a good stay.

As I was travelling with an organisation, I did not choose this hotel myself.
The location is perfect. Next to the Canal City Mall, in the middle of the historic area (loads of shrines and temples), next to the canal with foodstals and bars and near the subway.
For European standards, the room is small. But it is one of the biggest I have encounted in Japan as there was enough room for our bags and there was a desk and chair. There was also a minifridge and a good airco. There is no safe for valuables in the room.
The bathroom is small too, but it has everything you need. The hotel provides shampoo, bodywas, conditioner, tootbrush and... a nightshirt (not complementary of course 🤭).
If you don't want them to clean your room, just hang up the card on the door. They will hang a bag with tiwels and such on the doorknop. I like how they don't ignore the sign! In some hotels they still do the cleaning and such.
I didn't use any special services and I always went out for breakfast and dinner.
I did miss a nice lounge area, where you can sit a bit. As you don't want to relax in the bedroom. Or maybe I just couldn't find it, because my Japanese is not that good... 🙈
I would recommend a stay at this hotel.

I stayed at the hotel with my daughter as we were in town for an event. She was excited to get the top floor and our room had a very nice view, albeit on the mall side. Speaking of which, that is one of the best points of staying at this hotel: it is connected to the Canal City Mall. In fact, taking the elevator down to the B1 level leads you directly into the mall. It was extremely convenient to visit the mall for shopping and meals before heading back to the room.
The room itself was nice. Not particularly spacious but definitely not cramped at all. It was plenty enough room for the two of us to relax and rest. The bathroom is the standard unit bath system found in most business hotels around the country so nothing special.
The staff were all very helpful and everyone appeared to speak English to at least some degree so communication shouldn't be much of a problem for overseas travelers. While the hotel is quite large, the lobby feels small due to how narrow it is. There wasn't much room for taking a break or relaxing, but that's not really an issue.
We tried the breakfast on the morning before checkout. It was a good buffet with a combination of western and Japanese dishes. Everything I tried was tasty and the staff were all very friendly.
Aside from being connected to the mall, the hotel is in a very convenient location. You're not too far from the nightlife in Tenjin and there is a subway station one block away from the hotel so it is very easy to travel. One point for those traveling with elementary aged children: Fukuoka subway has a campaign that elementary students can but a pass to ride the trains all day for just 100 yen on weekends and holidays. This saved us quite a bit money over the two days were were traveling around the city.
All in all we both really enjoyed our stay and my daughter would love to go back again. It was definitely on the pricier side of similar hotels so it might be a while before I "splurge" on accommodation such as this for a standard trip. But I have zero complaints.

I booked a twin room and stay with my kids few days before , when I called the front desk and request pillow for my child, the staff called 金殷生 rejected my request for 3 times and finally he agreed to give us one more pillow after negotiation.
What is the reason of no spare pillow for such a famous hotel group ? Because I stayed in the twin room so I only entitled to have 2 pillows only?
Mr 金 told me because this is a business hotel , so if you stay in their hotel with kids ,they are not welcome at all.
I will not stay in Washington group hotel anymore because this is the worse hotel I stayed

Thank you for staying at Canal City Fukuoka Washington Hotel. At first, our employee responded very rudely to you, We apologize from the bottom of my heart. We also apologize for such late response. Extra pillows are available for guest. And If there is an additional request from the customer, it will be delivered to the room. However, employee were responding unkindly and incorrectly. We are very sorry about that. We will take this matter seriously as the issues of the hotel so that we will not disturb our customers in the same way in the future. We will do our best to provide customers with safe and comfortable accommodation.

The hotel is situated just next to the Canal City Mall. Its location is great for shopping and going to Hakata Station. Hotel room is big, clean and spacious for a family of 4. The staff is friendly & check-in is very efficient. Shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are provided.

Stayed 2 nights here. Location was great as just next to canal city mall. Musical fountain available in the mall. Easy to assess everywhere. Restaurant for morning breakfast buffet is bit small. You need to wait if the restaurant is full. Others okay.

This was not my first time in a Japanese hotel, so I knew what to expect in terms of room size. I was however, startled to view the cupboard-size room that had been prepared for our stay. There was nothing "studio" about the "studio twin" and when I enquired if they had put us in the correct room, I was informed "yes sir, the twin studio is a single room with two beds". Anyone who has seen the diminutive state of a Japanese single room can only imagine the gymnastics required to navigate a single room with two beds, one of which was not even a bed but a hastily arranged couchette- type sofa with a sheet.
This was just the beginning however, as we discovered that even though you may request a non-smoking room, your neighbours may indulge, leading to smoky corridors. Despite numerous attempts to find the main light switches, we discovered that the only way to turn off the main lights was to remove the key card from its holder beside the door, and turning off the power for the room. But this meant no air conditioning. If that's a deliberate policy in reducing the hotel's power bill, it's a pretty cunning one. We were awoken in the morning to the bizarre strains of Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz to mark the hour, which blasted around the hotel complex. A strange self-service machine awaits the deposit of your card which is supposed to issue a receipt showing the time and date of one's departure. When this failed to happen, we informed reception who told us somewhat nonsensically "We cannot give you a receipt".... !???? The convenient location of this hotel is often lauded, yet a hotel in the Tenjin section of town is far better for shopping and especially nightlife.

Our family of 12 stayed there for one night in Dec before getting our rental car and drive around Kyushu. We took the airport bus to somewhere near Canal City and under 0c we needed to walked for 15 minutes in frozen rain before we got to the hotel. Just a side note that there is another Washington hotel around the corner and we mixed it up and wasted another 10 mintues walking back and forth...
The check in took forever maybe because there were 12 of us with different nationalies. I think it took her 20 mins to figure out all rooms.... And ended up all rooms are smoking rooms, I told her we need non-smoking rooms but I got the standard answer "fully booked"... I told her I got an infant with me but she still said there is nothing they can do, oh well...
The hotel is located outside of the Canal City Shopping Mall and although they are part of the mall building it cannot be accessed through the mall. The shops and restaurants in the mall close early just like regular Japanese malls. But the hotel is 5 mins walk away from the famous street kiosks which are excellent for late night eaters like me.
The down side of this hotel is they do not have anywhere to stop the car in front so the next morning we went and picked up our two rental cars and we went back to pick up the rest of the families. We had no choice but to stop the car in a bus stop in front of the hotel and let the people in and get the suitcases loaded. It caused a bit chaos especially we are travelling with some small kids.
Afterall I am sure there are better choices near the station area.

I stayed here as a single female traveller. The hotel is located right next to Canal City Shopping Centre which provides all the food/meals/shopping you need. It is about 15 minutes walk to the closest subway station (Gion station). It feels quite safe walking back to the hotel on my own even at night. As long as you don't mind walking to Gion station, this hotel could be a good base for exploring Fukuoka since the subways could take you anywhere you want to go.
Service at the front desk is decent. Staff spoke some but not much English. They are more helpful if you could speak some Japanese (and I did). There is always a line of taxi outside the hotel so no worries about getting a cab to the airport.
The room is very very small. It is clean but not terribly comfortable compared to other 3 star hotels. There were some stains on the quit cover and the carpet. I asked for a non-smoking room but the room smelled like smoke. The walls were thin so it could get quite noisy if there's a bunch of people walking past your room, but not noisy enough to really disturb sleep.
Overall this is an ok 3 star hotel.

Canal City Washington is absolutely located at the best location in Fukuoka.
It is directly connected to Canal City mall and lots of shopping places and restaurants in a minute.
Hotel itself is not that fancy, but incredibly affordable: Quad room with four bed was $150 per night, perfect for family trip with young children.
If you are looking for more luxury experiences, Grand Hyatt is yours, or if you are looking for Onsen place, you should go to Dormy Inn located near by. However still strongly recommend Canal City Washington for budget travellers who'd like to spend more on food and shopping than others.
