City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

We stayed in a concept room for 3 nights and absoultley loved it. It was spacious, comfortable had great amenities and a large balcony. Bed were comfy. Location was great, subway over the road. Family mart next door. Walking distance to Tion, temples and Pagoda. Staff were unbelievable friendly and went out of there way to help us. We would definitely stay again.

At a midrange hotel, the tipping point to a better experience is the customer service. First, our room itself was not a standout. We didn’t love the utter lack of a view (which the hotel cannot change), or the fluorescent lighting or mashy pillows (which perhaps it could). Also, the bathroom had a stipulation, unfamiliar to me, that the door be kept shut during showering due to a fire alarm problem. None of these concerns are showstoppers to us. And in fact, upon arrival we immediately felt at home. Weeks earlier, I’d been in touch with the hotel by email and signed off with “I look forward to seeing cherry blossoms.” Fast-forward to check-in, and they’d taken my comment to heart: The front desk clerk presented me with a map of Kyoto that they had marked up with highlighter to show the many cherry blossom hot spots around the city. The thoughtful and unexpected gesture would be one of many friendly interactions over several days. Staff gave us sightseeing tips, booked restaurant reservations, and helped orient us to transit options. The human touch at this hotel made us more forgiving of a few quirks. The hotel room and common areas were spotlessly clean. While we didn’t opt for the breakfast buffet, the savory non-Western offerings looked fantastic to me. The location is great, walkable to the Gion district and close to two subway lines and a bus hub, and yet our room was very quiet. We were happy to have the Kyoto Hana Hotel as our home base.

We spent three nights at Kyoto Hana Hotel. The location is excellent north of the famous Gion district and near a subway and train station. Downtown is just a short walk away, while all famous sights in the eastern Higashiyama districts are within easy reach. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Staff was extremely polite and helpful and answered a lot of questions about our stay. A large breakfast buffet with Japanese and western options should be particularly mentioned. We can recommend Kyoto Hana Hotel.

This place was a rare gem of a find. 5 - 6 minute walk from Kyoto Station. Clean, modern, hostel with separate locked storage, no additional credit card charges, paper receipt w/ currency conversion to $, special requests honoured, super clean bathroom and showers, chairs, and tables. Very reasonable rates. Cleaner, cheaper, more comfortable than overpriced, dilapidated Peace House Sakura Youth Hostel. Will definitely book again when visiting Kyoto. Highly recommended.

After our original hotel booking turned out to be a nightmare we luckily booked a stay at Hana Hotel very last minute and got a pretty reasonable deal. Our room was on the top floor and included a mini balcony, unfortunately it didn't have any seats to sit out so we weren't able to make the most of it but the room had a great view facing the mountains of the surrounding area. The shower/wet room had a great big bathtub, which we made use of and we were even given some bath freebies upon check in, which was a lovely touch. Sadly the room was quite small, a bit damp and cramped for my liking but overall it was the best we could find at short notice.
