Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

Our family of seven, from 83 to 7 years old, had the great fortune of experiencing Shiraume by being a guest at Baian. Out family occupied the entire 2-story renovated home a few steps from Shiraume. The bath, garden, bed and every detail about the home felt like we were in a timeless oasis. It would be impossible to overstate the hospitality, kindness, service and personal connection we experienced. Everyone in our family is grateful for the dream-like memories of three generations anchored as a guest at Shiraume/Baian.

I am still in awe from our stay here, even as i depart from the peninsula in tokyo. I have been traveling all over the world in the past few years and have never experienced accommodations like our stay at shiraume. The staff were the most kind, gentle, accommodating group, that i have ever met. The dining was incredible, but the accommodations were amazing, even more enjoyable than any five star hotel i have ever visited. My congratulations to the staff and management for creating an amazing experience........cant thank you enough......

We had the great fortune of spending 4 nights/days at Baian, Shiraume's new 2-unit annex. My teenage daughter, husband and I were so sad to have to leave! The facilities were stunning, from the shower room with soaking tub to the private garden, comfortable beds/futons and wood-paneled bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room. The key to our amazing stay, however, was the staff (our new "Kyoto family"). The owner, Tomoko, is kind, gracious, knowledgeable and caring, as are every member of the Shiraume team. They set the high bar for hospitality that makes one feel like an honored member of their family. We enjoyed breakfast in our ryokan every morning, inclusive of personal messages for each of us in Japanese and English from Tomoko on beautiful stationery. My husband and daughter opted for the indulgent Western breakfast every day while I preferred the Japanese breakfast. Tomoko explained every dish and its historical significance. We learned so much! We also had dinner at Shiraume one night in a private dining room which was extremely well prepared and delivered. Tomoko helped us plan our daily activities and provided restaurant recommendations and made reservations for us. Shiraume has been in Tomoko's family for over 150 years. Her aunt was a geiko (geisha) and owned Baian. She her aunt retired at the agie of 92 last year, they converted the home to a ryokan. Writing this review makes me want to return to Baian / Shiraume soon :-)

Shiraume is a wonderful place to stay, mostly importantly because of the incredible personal service. As others have said it is a very authentic ryokan experience, the food is amazing (don't miss the kobe beef dinner - out of this world!), the rooms are spotless with every amenity (though, of course, it is a ryokan, so be ready for tatami mats and sleeping on very comfortable mattresses on the floor.) It is in an excellent location in the Gion district, near to nearly everything we wanted to do. But it is the personal service that makes me want to rate this six stars! All the staff seemed to know what activities we had planned, and what our favourite snacks were. Tomoko, the owner, gave us very useful tips on where to go and what to do, and she had the absolutely best restaurant recommendations. We stayed five nights, and when we left it was as if we were leaving good friends. Highly recommended.

Staying at Ryokan Shiraume was a magical experience. It’s a special place on one of the prettiest streets in Kyoto. The owner and her staff are the best! At the end of our stay, I really did not want to leave our private dining room overlooking the river.
