Neighborhood
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.

My partner and I stayed here for one night whilst in Kyoto, which was probably the right amount of time for us. The price was cheap which was a great benefit. Location - Really great, right in the middle of the shopping market and pretty easy to find. Loads of great places to eat locally. Reading area - So it's kinda like staying in a giant library which is pretty cool and as a manga fan you're spoilt for choice, even if you don't speak Japanese the enormous variety will probably keep you entertained. The sofa area is very cosy. However the first thing you notice as you walk in is the smell, which is like a combination of fried fish food and stale smoke which is quite unpleasant. And worse still the sleeping area is right next to it so it also smells a bit too. The interior looks a bit tired too like stains on chairs etc. Facilities - You can rent towels if you need to shower and both the bathroom and shower rooms are very clean. Sleeping area - Standard capsule experience, be aware if you have a suitcase there is no storage nearby so you'll just have to leave it in the aisle outside your bed. We were unlucky that someone near to us set an alarm at 6am and the phone vibrations and noise woke us up. Go for one night for the novelty if you really like manga but there are more comfortable places if you are in Kyoto for more than 2 nights.

It's a "capsule" hostel, so you sleep on a bed inside a box, basically. For someone who doesn't like bunk beds or hostels, this one truly is an exception and I would return. What I liked: 1) Place is kept very clean, orderly and well run. No smells, bugs or stains. Plenty of free stuff in the locker room like mouth wash, soap, towels, hair brush, etc. Staff is always running around keeping it in shape. 2) The staff are very polite and professional. 3) Great location. 4) When I was there, it was not very busy and I didn't feel like it was crowded or I didn't have privacy despite sleeping in shared quarters. 5) It was quiet at night and during the day. 5) Bathroom and shower were very clean. Coin laundry in the men's locker room. 6) It's a hostel + comic library, so if you are into manga or just want to chill, there's a large common area for that, and it is quite nice. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Kyoto. Other stuff: If you smoke, there is a smoking room. There are also free PJs if you want to wear them.

My husband and I really loved this place, it wasn't your typical hostel as it wasn't as social but very chill. It had lots of hideaway spots to just do your thing and was so so so clean!! The staff were extremely friendly and so helpful....oh and the capsule was super comfortable!!! Definitely a gem--stay stay!!

This place was amazing! I booked it due to the price, but actually it's more like a library with some beds in it, and really nice bathrooms! Amazing amenities, good security, and in a good area with tons of stuff around to do and see. The staff were also very friendly and helpful!

I've stayed in 100+ hostels worldwide, from Sydney to Prague to LA to Bangkok and many more cities. This is by far the cleanest, most comfortable hostel I've ever stayed at. The facilities and amenities are amazing. Felt like in a 5* hotel lol
