Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

Had four nights at Unizo Hotel. Like previous reviews I acknowledge rooms are not large but this is Japan. Stop whinging and get on with your journey. I didn't have any problems with cleanliness and room service. Reception was efficient if not LOL. Hotel is well situated and close to many sights. My only complaint was lack of amenities in hotel . Even something like an ice machine would be a start. No breakfast in hotel so bought tickets for coffee shop next door. A big mistake. Dreadful food and coffee. Go anywhere nearby as it would have to be better .Only one other grizzle-pillow was extremely uncomfortable.

Plus: The hotel is clean. The staff are efficient. The on-site launderette is very handy. The public transport links are good. Minus: the double rooms are very small. I expected small rooms in Japan, but here, I had to clamber over my husband to get out of the bed because the double was jammed right against the wall. There was no wardrobe - just some coat racks and hangars. There was very little space to put suitcases, which if you’re visiting Japan for a fortnight from the U.K. presents practical challenges. The breakfasts are provided by the adjoining cafe outlet and really aren’t worth the price. There is no buffet - just a limited choice of a wiener sausage with either a pancake, a slice of toast or a hot dog roll. This comes with a yoghurt a small salad and a cube of Spanish omelette. If we’d known, we’d have chosen to get our breakfast fix independently.

We stayed for 2 nights in this hotel. We had booked a double room. The first room we were shown was tiny, dark and looked like a prison cell. I refuse to stay there and we were given a slightly better room. It was at best a single room, you could only access the bed from one side and my partner has to climb over me to go to the bathroom at night. There was no room for the luggage and neither the TV remote nor toilet remote were working. None of the staff spoke any English. The dryer in the laundry was defect. When we asked for a taxi we were waved away and told to find one on the street. I would actually like some of my money back as £100per night for this dump is outrageous.

Was traveling on my own and stayed the weekend here. Clean, comfortable, rooms at a reasonable price. I rated it 'very good' rather than excellent because it's a small room and this is not a full service hotel. But it was perfect for what I needed as I didn't spend much time there. I wanted a central location with an easy walk to a subway station, Nishiki Market and Pontocho Alley. I was able to get to all the sites from this hotel's location and it was a clean, quiet room. Note that you can get bottled water in the lobby at the reservation counter.

I stayed in UNIZO Kyoto after my visit to the another cheap hotel chain located in other cities and I have to say UNIZO is really a good choice for cheap hotel room. The room is not too small (at least I can open my suitcase in single room) with all the things I need. They even provide bathing salt in bath room! The room is clean and I really had a nice stay with HOTEL UNIZO Kyoto Shijo Karasuma.
