Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

Kyoto Century Hotel is located two minutes from the Kyoto Station and is a beautiful, modern Western-style hotel. The rooms are quaint but not smaller than your average Japanese hotel and it contains almost all the mod-cons except for a microwave. Great home base for tourists visiting Kyoto.

We chose the Kyoto Centaury Hotel because of its proximity to the train station and main downtown historic temples. There is no convenient subway but they are frequent buses that can be crowded and delayed by traffic congestion. The train station is massive and connected to many restaurants as well as a supermarket that has reasonably priced fresh food for take away. We had breakfast at the hotel that was quite tasty with both Japanese and international dishes. The non Japanese items here were the best that we had in all the hotels we stayed at in Japan. Coffee in particular was outstanding. The rooms were comfortable but the bathroom was a one person affair – see picture attached. Lobby was somewhat dated. The "Handy" smartphone in each room was very useful to self guide around the city and it is worth considering this hotel for this feature if you do not have internet on your personal device.

Smallest room of 5 we stayed in Japan but decorated tastefully. Comfortable bed. In-room safe, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge. Air-con ok. Complementary water x 2. Free Wi-Fi, bit slow. Vanity sink in bedroom!! Complementary bathroom toiletries. Free standing shower dispensers. Good shower pressure. Hair-dryer. Window in bathroom/bedroom, luckily there were blinds fitted!! We stayed in 5 hotels in Japan & all bar 1 had glass doors/windows in their bathrooms, how bizarre!! Usual tasty buffet breakfast fayre including egg station. Located 5 mins from the train station. Restaurants & shops nearby. Hotel bar very expensive. Wanted to try a decent sake so came here, big mistake. A small glass of beer was ¥900 (£7), a sake ¥1,300 (£10) & there was also a black tea. Ok, you are in Japan. What really galled me was a table charge of ¥1,000 (£7.50). Total bill including service tax & consumption tax ¥3,970 (£29). Wow!! I realise they have to pay overheads but there was 6 people in the bar, reduce prices & you may get more customers. On the other hand, exit hotel right & right at the corner & walk 5 mins to a few dive bars (canvas tarpaulins). ¥750 (£5) for a litre of local beer, can’t beat that. Stayed 4 nights as part of a Riviera Tour

Visited this hotel before. We are back after the hotel renew. Fortunately we got free upgrade of our room which is comfortable & elegant! But the room size is still small. Hotel located nearby the Kyoto JR station & underground walking street, very convenient for transportation & shopping. We will be back!!👍🏻服務吾錯,房間面積略小但佈置優雅, 位置靠近京都駅及商店地下街,飲食、購物或坐近鈇、JR也十分方便!

Our experience with this hotel was mixed. On arrival, we asked to have a room not facing the railroad tracks/station. 3/4 of the rooms do not face the station/tracks. Sure enough, we were given a room directly over the tracks with associated train noise all night. We reserved through Expedia, and that may have caused the staff to put us in a less desirable location. The location is excellent, and tour companies capitalize on this fact. At periods when tour groups arrive/depart/have breakfast, the lobby and dining areas are jampacked. The upside is that the room was clean, comfortable, and had an excellent bathroom with very good shower. We would stay elsewhere were we to return to Kyoto. Not bad, just that there is better available in the same area.
