Neighborhood
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

I stayed at the RIHGA Royal about 11 years ago so this was a return trip. The last time was different as I was in a group of 120 and was one of the organisers. This time it was a family holiday so I was looking for peace and relaxing- doing all the tourist things rather than work. The hotel is a short walk from Kyoto station - 5 to 10 minutes depending on which exit you use. But it has a shuttle bus so this is a better way if you have kids or a lot of luggage . There are a lot of steps or road crossIngs so access for disabled people from the station not easy. The shuttle may be better. Once inside it has everything you need .Good bars and restaurants. An ATM near reception. Large rooms All in all a lovely hotel.

Nice clean room. Close to Kyoto Station. The shuttle bus was nice. Wished we had better known the pickup and dropoff location when we first arrived at Kyoto station with our luggage. There were wifi issues and we didn't have a consistent signal to use throughout our stay. Luckily we had our own portable wifi to use. Also, the temperature of the water when taking a shower fluctuated regularly from warm to freezing cold water, which was a nuisance.

From the check in process to the amazing Concierge. They really make an effort to make your stay enjoyable and easy. The 14th floor restaurant has an unbeatable view! Similar to the space needle restaurant in seattle it Revolves so you can enjoy the 360% view. The swimming pool and gym costs about 6$ usd to use. No resort fee at this restaurant so not a big deal.

This hotel is within 7 mins of walking station from the Kyoto train station. Check in is fast and efficient. There is free wifi throughout the hotel, Gym admission on the other hand is not free (¥540). Room has bathtub, no shower closet. There is a bar in basement 1 and the Jap restaurant there serves Kyoto cuisine.

I chose this hotel as it was close to the station (we were coming off shinkansen and taking the haruka to the Osaka airport on the way back) and it seemed to have modernist old school charm. Both of these were true in experience, and the breakfast was excellent. 10th floor was good view of the street - i like how the window juts out. One disappointment was the frustrating internet - inspite of complaints and reboots. Am not happy about this - hard to work, impossible to stream!
