Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

I just returned from a trip to Japan with my two adult sons and my daughter-in-law, and we stayed at the Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto for 4 nights. This hotel was out launching pad for our Kyoto sightseeing and it is location was just what we needed for a base. We were able to walk to Nishiki Market in 5 minutes, close to the Shijo-Karasuma Station, and a few minutes away from the main Kyoto street action. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant because we wanted to eat the Kyoto food on te outside. We hardly used the hotel for anything other than a place to crash at the end of the day. We were out of the hotel by 8:00am and then dragged ourselves back to the hotel about 8:30pm each night. The hotel staff was outstanding, the facilities were great, and everyone made eye contact with us every time we entered the lobby. We used taxis several times and we were greeted by the staff whenever we arrived outside by taxi. When we went to Kiyomizudera, I asked for the hotel to call me a taxi to take us to the site, and I thought they would call a taxi on the phone. The doorman actually ran down the street and hailed a taxi on Karasuma dori and brought him back to the hotel. Now that is service! What a great hotel. I would stay here again if I ever go back to Kyoto.

Stayed at the Nikko for 2 nights recently upon recommendation from family that have stayed with the chain prior. Upon arriving and being greeted by staff, our bags were taken and ready to be delivered to our rooms as soon as we checked in. Check in was a breeze and informative of the hotel amenities. Rooms are charming and spacious with lots of amenities and toiletries provided including a pod machine with 6 pods per day. The concierge was very informative and helpful and all staff are very friendly. The hotel is located in a great position close to train stations, food and shopping. Would recommend for a great stay.

We had 3 nights here & found it to be very comfortable. A great corner view from our room which was amazing day & night! Breakfast could be quite busy & may have to wait for a table if bus groups are in but plenty of choice & a nice takeaway coffee at the end if you wished! Good location to main shopping, would def recommend.
