Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

I booked a Deluxe Room for 4 people few months before my vacation. Location is unbeatable but it could be a little bit difficult to find if you are not familiar with Kyoto Station. There is only one entrance which near the Shinkansan (bullet train) gate. It's located at the back of Kyoto Station so if you see the Kyoto Tower then you're on the wrong side. Outside of the hotel entrance there's a small Uniqlo store and lots of restaurants so you don't really need to go outside on a rainy day. There was a little bit of train noise because the hotel is sandwiched in between two sets of train tracks but it didn't bother us too much. We only stayed there for one night so I couldn't comment too much.

This hotel is right in Kyoto station and you would never know it while in the room...it was very quiet. We could not hear a train or the thousands of people wandering around. Then, even though it’s a “business” hotel, it’s the little things: this was a 3 person room and the 3 drink cups were each a different color. Also, the shower head was my top rated ever of the hundred hotels I’ve stayed at. And lastly, of course, this being Japan the employees were super-friendly and welcoming. This was our second stay here and we’d come back anytime.

Stayed 3 nights. Small room for 2 beds and people. Great bathroom and shower. Beds rather firm and we wished there were 2 pillows. Location was great for food choices in station and food court under Kyoto tower. Got a bus pass and used it to get to various gardens and temples as buses are leaving from the station (opposite side from hotel). They were strict on checkin time which was disappointing as we arrived at 1pm and could not get to room until 3pm. Supermarket by hotel entrance convenient.

We arrived during cherry blossom time. It was very busy. Arrived on Fri and left on Monday. Hotel is right in the station. However, our room faced the subway tracks. It is somewhat noisy at certain times in the morning and nite. But overall, not too bad. Couldn't adjust the air conditioning/heat. But it was fine. Room was clean and modern and they give you 2 bottles of water everyday. If you want a hotel by the station this is the place. However, since the temples are all around kyoto. Next time, I think I will get something more in the middle of kyoto.

Coming from the US, one wouldn’t imagine a nice hotel in a train station but this hotel was definitely a nice surprise. It’s located right inside of the station so it was a short walk from the train and we didn’t have to suffer the rain and snow. It’s also surrounded by plenty of food options right outside the doors.
