I had never stayed at a Ryokan before, but will look forward to doing again if they're all as nice as this one. Loved the ambiance, service and beauty of this boutique ryokan. location is great and the staff couldn't be nicer.

Felt like stepping back in time to a more peaceful and traditional Japan. Very thick futon and pillow made for restful night. Quiet area off the Main Street. Great private bath. Definitely recommend!!!!!!

I am almost afraid to write this review, because what if tourists like me flock to this spot and ruin what is currently an under the radar gem! But they deserve it, so here goes-- stay here!!! It's what a lot of other ryokans in Kyoto wish they were: Authentic, brimming with charm, and home to some of the greatest hospitality in Japan. I stayed here with my mom for three nights before Christmas, and we couldn't have been happier. Prepare for some work in communicating if no one in your party speaks Japanese, but it's worth any frustration that may cause, I promise!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Toshiharu. The location is great, far enough from the main road but with-in walking distance of some major attractions such as Nishiki Market and Gion. Toshiharu is a beautiful old style building with traditional Japanese gardens. The rooms are small yet comfortable. I had no problems sleeping or waking up from other guests. The shared baths/shower system worked well with you being allocated a time. The breakfast was very nice and gave me a chance to experience a traditional Japanese breakfast. The staff and owners are all very friendly and go out of their way to help your trip in Kyoto. It was a shame I could only stay for one night. I would definitely recommend a stay here and would stay again.

Thank you for your review and staying our hotel. We are so glad of you to enjoy staying our hotel. We hope you could get Japanese traditional atmosphere. Actually our sound proof is not enough because our building was built in 110 years ago, but it is a big relief, that you did not have any problem with that. Kyoto is an attractive city, so it is worth to visit again! We wish you would stay again! Thank you!

If you want tradition this Place was beautiful and authentic. Our room overlooked the garden with glass sliding doors. The bathroom was shared but so clean. I had the Japanese bath but they have western one too. The beds were comfortable. It is family run and they do all they can to make your stay enjoyable. The breakfast each morning was delicious and they provide kimonos and shoes. Location was great so close to everything. Just loved it. Would highly recommend. I would stay again.

I caused a communication error in an email asking if a second night was available and wasn't able to access my email in the few hours between my asking and their response. So they held the room and lost a night of revenue because I had found another place to stay. I felt very bad, but they were kind and worked to understand what happened (me speaking English with no Japanese and them speaking Japanese with some English -- I'll learn more for my next visit!) The staff were exceptional taking care of my dad and me beyond just the payment issue so all I can say is I would never stay at another ryokan or recommend another ryokan to friends visiting Kyoto. Thank you!

Stayed back in July many months ago. I was a solo female traveller, and stayed one night in the UME single person room. Neat, authentic Meiji-period ryokan in Kyoto. Worth trying even if you only stay one or two nights. My room was fairly tiny as it only accommodated solo travellers (and being by myself in an old room with just a single window and no TV perhaps conjured vague images of Japanese horror movies before bed) but there are much nicer rooms, and the ryokan itself is a unique experience - I left my stuff there earlier that day and checked in late at night round 9:30pm (cutoff is 10pm) but if I took a nicer room I would suggest coming in a few hours earlier to relax. My room had Wi-Fi, a kettle and water for tea, a closet, mirror, hairdryer, small sewing kit and outlets

Is to stay in a Ryokan. There’s nothing better to continue the cultural experiences that Kyoto has to offer in the day with sleeping in the traditional Japanese manner at night. Toshiharu is a tranquil oasis run by the most lovely people. It’s in a great location near a metro station, and it was a real highlight of our trip.

Staying in a riyokan is an excellent way to appreciate Japanese culture and tradition. This riyokan is on a quiet street a very short distance from a main avenue with excellent connections to subway and buses. There are small excellent restaurants in the neighborhood. The staff is gracious and the riyokan is a quiet world away from the busy city. Note that that you can have a room with an attached shower or attached toilet, but not both. Some rooms may have neither an attached shower or toilet.
