The hotel is and rooms are quite dated (12/28-12/30). There was only one person working at the front desk during check-in and there was line of about 6 parties in line. This went on for at least 10 minutes until the gentleman (a local Taiwanese tour guide with Japanese guests) behind me made a complaint over the phone. Less than a minute later 3 additional staff magically popped out from the backroom to assist guests. Clearly there is some sort of mismanagement. Throughout my stay (3 days, 2 nights) I wanted to ask the front desk for some minor requests, but every time I visited the front desk there was always only one unfortunate hotel staff working with a line of guests. For the price, I would not come back until the rooms are renovated (which I heard they were in the process of doing).

We had a comfortable 3 night stay in Howard Taipei. Thank you to sales manager Jussi for coordinating our stay very well and often the prompt reply whenever we have questions. The hotel may be dated and in need of renovation asap but generally interiors are still well maintained. The staff generally provides 5 star warm service and we enjoyed our stay. Thankful to the helpful concierge staffs who helped us with cab hailing.

I would NOT recommend this hotel or stay here again. The main reasons for the poor review are 1) How old the hotel is 2) Our very bad experience with first night assigned to a wheelchair-accessible room. Disclaimer: for the rest of our stay (4 nights), the hotel upgraded us to a suite. BUT this was due to coincidence of a family friend's friend who is a relative of the owner and made phone calls (not us asking) after hearing about events of the 1st night experience. The hotel did not proactively offer this until the phone call. We're very appreciative of the gesture. Thus the additional star to 2 star review. This hotel is very dated and everything is old. The fitness center and the saunas are so old that it's an embarrassment to be in a "5 star" hotel. The saunas are just 2 rooms in the shower/locker area. Now the bad experience with the 1st night of our 5 night stay. Issue #1: We had booked a room with 2 beds 6 months in advance of our December 2024 stay! But upon check-in, we were told that they only have a room with 1 king bed for the 1st night and that we would have to switch room after 1st night. The front desk couldn't explain to us why we needed to switch room. They told us there's no other room available that night. But we continue to see guests check in through out the night. It's difficult to make sense of the situation and not feel cheated from this hotel. Issue #2: The room for the 1st night only has a king bed, but we had 3 people (8 yo child). They said they couldn't even add a roll-away bed for that night. Once in the room, we then realized it's not even a king bed. it's 2 queens put together, so our son had a difficult night in the crevasse of the 2 beds. Issue #3: This is the biggest surprise when we got into the room. Room #601 is a wheelchair-accessible room which we don't need or asked for. They never even brought this up at the counter (IMO, very deceptive). We immediately went back to the lobby, but was told there are no other room available that night. So we had no choice but continue to settle into this room that cost $275! Issue #4: The bathroom of the accessible room was the main pain point. It is cramped with a curtained shower. The shower handheld is set at waist height along the wall for wheelchair use. So it's not meant for taking shower standing. My wife and child didn't even shower that night. I did try to shower, holding the handheld most of the time, ended up with water in half of the bathroom floor. Then there's the toilet with no cover as it's designed for wheelchair. The sensor for the toilet flush triggered whenever we try to use the sink. Issue #5: B/c we had to change room, we had to pack everything up after 1st night. Front desk said we just have to wait like everyone else for 3pm (re)check-in again. Multiple front desk agents promised that the room would be ready by 3pm. We came back to the hotel at 3pm, room not ready, we waited close to an hour and finally got keys to our new room (the suite) at 4pm. The experience of the 1st night left us feel cheated and manipulated. The front desk never had good explanation on what the mix up was. If we hadn't gone back to main desk to raise our concerns, they were going to "let us have that room to avoid changing room" for the 5 nights! As mentioned above. Through coincidence and not our asking, friend's friend phone call got us upgraded to a suite. The hotel staff never tried to mediate the situation, until the friend made the calls. The suite is no doubt nicer than room #601, but the dated room still doesn't command the price. And we were not really impressed with the suite. To top things off, after my wife's shower at the suite, she came out and just laughed and told me: "you're not going to believe this, the big bottle of shampoo ran out of shampoo already". And that is the 5-star suite… the shampoo wasn’t refilled after a room cleanup, even though we wrote a note along with the tip (they took the tip), we finally had to tell the reception. We will never stay here or recommend this hotel to anyone who asks.

I have known of this hotel since childhood, where the rich and famous would stay in the old days. This is the first time we stay in this elegant hotel. It attracted us to book this hotel because of its location and its family suite. Our kids were amazed when they entered the room with bunk beds with a slide, toys, and a toy car (they said this is the best hotel they had ever stayed). The family suite is clean and spacious. It has an old-style bathroom (but still very clean and has all the amenities - including children amenities). We had buffet dinner and breakfast at the hotel and food quality is excellent. Staff is professional, courteous and friendly. Location-wise, it's a short walk to department stores and MRT station. We highly recommend this hotel especially for families

What a find! Was expecting a so so tourist hotel but got an excellent hotel. Staff was efficient and pleasant. Make sure you partake of the breakfast buffet, it’s amazing. Both the Chinese and Western items were varied and tasty. Next time in Taipei I will be back

The Howard Plaza Hotel has just about everything needed for a 5-star rating, with a central location; well-maintained interior including spacious atrium; clean, spacious and tastefully-decorated rooms; a gym and sizable pool; good dining and banqueting facilities.... However, the afternoon after my check-in, despite my locked door and 'do not disturb' sign, hotel staff members -- apparently not cleaners -- opened my door, and at least one stepped into my room while I was trying to sleep off jetlag. Senior hotel staff later said that room entry despite 'do not disturb' signs are standard hotel procedure (to make sure guests are OK), apologized and wrote an apology letter, and promised that "every effort...will be made to avoid future recurrence." However, the letter made no mention of changed procedures, etc. For the sake of future guests' safety and feeling of security (particularly soon after check-in), I hope that the hotel does indeed prevent repeats.

Rooms were dirty. Under the bed was disgusting, carpets were filthy. Buffet was so so. Way too expensive. Staff were ok not super friendly. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel because of the filthy carpets. Maybe cleaning staff should check under the beds!!

The Howard Plaza was a comfortable stay in a well-located part of Taipei. There's no doubt this hotel/building have been around for a while, and so it does show its age as far as furnishings and layout, but everything is well maintained and comfortable. The room has been updated over time with additional tech and amenities. I didn't eat in the restaurant (too expensive) but it certainly look ed well equipped and was buys every time I went past. If you're a business traveller that doesn't want to spend big $ at the W, Hyatt, Hilton etc. this is a great alternative. Da'an and Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT stations are an easy 3 minute walk to the south/north respectively, and SOGO shopping centre is close as well, if you wanted to visit there. Plenty of good restaurants and cafe's nearby too.

Fantastic hotel and a great city to visit. Have to say that we were disappointed by the restaurants in the hotel both for dinner and breakfast. At dinner we were discouraged from having the all you can eat dim sum and advised to have other dishes which cost more and most were disappointing to us. Breakfast, we arrived at 9am and dishes were running out and not replaced. It was all ok though, we found many restaurants locally for brunch and dinner that were amazing to visit during the rest of our 10 day trip. The hotel patisserie is Amazing and definite must! The hotel lobby bar was great. Fantastic staff and the bar food was really good. The pool was delightful to relax in and the hotel gym well equipped A great hotel 😀

This is a very large, full service hotel. Large lobby, huge lobby restaurant/ Dining Room. The buffets for dinner and breakfast are excellent in both quality & choice. My room was modern and large, big comfy bed, large bathroom and all mod cons, including free WiFi everywhere. Close to subway system, shops, restaurants and bars. Outdoor swimming pool on 1F - not huge but enough to get a few decent lengths in. Staff friendly & helpful. Looking forward to returning.
