I stayed here for 3 nights over Chinese New Year.

The hotels exterior and interior is impressive, especially if you are a Western tourist looking for an “authentic” feel.

The location atop a hill offers a splendid view of Taipei and is easily accessible by the MRT ( 10 minute walk near Shilin market) or taxi or complimentary shuttle bus offered by the hotel to two MRT stations.

There are a selection of restaurants in the hotel with Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine, a buffet option with a mix of cuisines, steak house and even a Family Mart ( for snacks) and a cafe selling pizza( which looked good), pie, cake, beer, ice cream etc but the service in the cafe is TERRIBLE!! drinks arriving way after meals were finished and all dishes arriving at separate times with a total timeframe of about 1 hour.

I stayed in two rooms during my stay. An entry level room, which was nice but very small and without windows ( which i knew) making it feel even smaller.

I also stayed in a corner suite facing the city. This was impressive and vast as you can see from the pictures below which speak for themselves.

In summary, its a nice hotel, nice novelty appeal to it. If you choose to stay here i would recommend spending a little extra to secure a room with windows and if you have money to burn you should definitely try the corner suite!

The Grand Hotel, is well, grand. After visiting the weekend farmers market at Taipei Expo Park, I walked over to some bus stops and waited for a free shuttle bus up to the Grand Hotel. It came right away. In minutes, we were up at the hotel, high on a hill with a panoramic view of city below. I didn't stay at this hotel; it was just a tourist visit.

The orchid centre piece inside the lobby was spectacular - everyone took pictures of it. The restaurant was full of customers having a late lunch set. Later as I came back down the stairs, I saw that everyone was having a penne pasta course in some tomato based sauce.

Up the grand staircase covered in dense, red wool carpeting, you could walk around the perimeter on the second floor, and look down into to the lobby area.

The hotel was started in 1952 and completed in 1973 with many additions. Presidential suite costs about $5000US but other rooms are affordable at about $100US per night. President Chiang Kai-Shek built this hotel out of need for a five star hotel for ambassadors and foreign dignitaries to stay, in this city. Many negotiations between countries have been facilitated at this hotel. There is a wall of photographs of famous people who have stayed here: Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Mandela, Thatcher, Aquino, even movie stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Charles Bronson.

There are 490 rooms over 8 levels – 8 being an Asian number of luck. There are auditoriums, meeting rooms, a number of restaurants, a fitness centre, sauna, swimming pool. There are gift shops on all floors, with a lovely gold dragon water fountain on second floor.

The free shuttle bus every half an hour takes you back down to the bus stops and metro station so you can find your way home.

“Grand” is not colossal enough to describe this hotel. Its monumental exterior Chinese Palace design is outpaced by the majestic interior presentations, together with an awe inspiring views to the basin of Taipei, this hotel is without a doubt THE BEST Chinese Palace style hotel experience in Taiwan, if not one of the best in the greater China region.

I stayed in room 608 for a night on May 2, 2020. The room interior definitely gives you a feeling of time travel. A good mix of Forbidden Palace style furnitures with modern marble bathroom and toiletry designs, though may lack the high end feel of the amenities, or the poshness of the designs and decorations, but the room is super functional and spacious. With almost 46sqm of space and an unusually sizable balcony, there is more space than you need to make creative uses of them.

If you expect this hotel to have experiences similar to the modern posh hotel names like Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, or even the W, then please look away. However if you are looking for a very unique, very Chinese, very Asian hotel experience, this hotel really cannot be missed.

Hotel guests can also access the hotel club for free, which will give you access to the olympic class swimming pool and gym. The club membership usually costs more than 10,000 US dollars to join for local residents. So, please be sure to make full use of this amazing facility!

Another must do activity during your stay at the Grand Hotel is the hotel guided tour, in which you will learn the history of the hotel, the unique designs in every corner of the building, and exclusive access to the underground secret tunnel used by the president in the old times to evade from emergencies.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights. It’s a very beautiful hotel with Classical Chinese architectural style and a lot of good Chinese restaurants.

As because it’s at CNY, the hotel was decorated with colourful lanterns, with violinists and saxophonists playing live Chinese music at the lobby.

The breakfast served dim sum and western food at the same time. A perfect occasion for east meets west.

The good location of the hotel together with the shuttle bus service to and from railway stations offered great convenience to the night market of Shilin, Expo museum and got us connected to theme parks and other attractions along the railway.

All the staff members here were nice and efficient, a true representation of the friendly and thoughtful Taiwanese culture.

Lunch at the Golden Dragon Restaurant.

Cantonese cuisine is delicious, just like in Hong Kong. On the other hand, the table service is unfriendly, no smile, the dishes are thrown on the table.

The lacquered duck is on reservation, I do not recommend, the skin is not crispy and the pancakes that accompany it are too thick.

Only tasting Cantonese cuisine is a good idea, but on the other hand, it is better to leave it at that and not order anything else, you will save money.

This hotel is more suitable for taking photos and exploring the area for just a day. The rooms are a bit outdated, and it feels like the hotel is coasting on its reputation. The concierge staff seemed to have limited knowledge and couldn't provide much information when asked questions. In 2024, they even charge for a replacement key card if you lose it, and everything in the hotel seems to come with a price tag.

It's not very centrally located, but if you're planning to visit places like the Shilin Official Residence and Shilin Night Market, it might be convenient for a short stay. The highlight of the hotel is the guided tour of the emergency escape tunnels, which are available in the morning and afternoon. It's reasonably priced at 200 Taiwanese dollars per person, and they offer an interesting experience.

This hotel is top notch, 5-star. This is where diplomats come to Taiwan and has an air of prestigue. Their service is also fabulous- I arrived in an Uber and had forgotten my phone in the car, and the hotel tracked my taxi down, and spoke to the driver and arranged for him to return it to me. Rooms have large balconies with fabulous city view.

This is an excellent, very very grand hotel indeed. It was built specifically for diplomats and other world leaders. The lobby is massive and you are greeted by live piano and violin serenade. Service was excellent as well.

The rooms were very large and clean, but the room and the hotel overall felt very "formal" and "official". It felt like the hotel was built specifically for business affairs (which it was!) and I can't say it was very family friendly.

The views are spectacular on the balany and you can see Tapei 101 from here. There is a swimming pool - but unfortunately the swimming pool is not really near the hotel (but is adjacent to the hotel), so it is not very coveniently accessed. Walking on the grounds of the hotel - the grounds are very well maintained.

Overall - a grand experience and you feel like you are royalty, a world leader or someone of importance. I would recommend this hotel for business affairs, conferences and other such formal events. I can't say I would come back here with a family and it is not really family focused.

The lobby of the Grand Hotel Taipei is so outrageously majestic you feel you're walking on to a filmset where the Emperor is arriving shortly along with his 200 courtiers.

The rooms are nice, too without being stand outs. We had a terrace without chairs, probably because chairs would ruin the illusiuon of grandeur. The morning buffet was great but two days were enough at this memorable hotel since we prefer places that are more quiet and serene.

This historic 5 star hotel has been included in the city itineraries for tour groups . The contingents were in huge droves I hope they are not disrupting the hotel occupants. The majestic staircases are quite admirable too. Breakfast guests may be annoyed But I hoped they don’t .

Generally, tap water isn't drinkable in Taiwan. The hotel WILL provide a bottle or two of water for each night you stay. I would also imagine that more water is readily available.
