There is a lot of good - and some bad - with this lodge. The location is WOW! And the rhino tracking was a uniqe experience. Food and service is good. But, swimming pool is really dirty (it’s not at all possible to use it because it’s so dirty). The reception is not really pleasant. Rooms are fine, but small. It’s worth to spend a night or two at Grootberg lodge, but not expect to use the pool.

We visited here for a wedding and had a fantastic time. Aside from the breathtaking views and cute lodging, the staff were excellent - we enjoyed fantastic service and food (with vegetarian and vegan options available). Everyone really went the extra mile to make sure the day - and our stay - was one to remember.

We stayed there two nights and I’d say it was worth it, at least just for the view… It does feel very isolated but once in a lifetime experience! The staff was very friendly, the food good enough compared to NWR accommodations. We did the Rhino tracking, we didn’t see any Rhino (there are only 8 in the area). But it was fun to be truly in the middle of nowhere with beautiful landscapes! It is quite expensive for the room you get, no heating with below zero at night, it was very cold in the rooms!

Stayed 2 nights in order to do the rhino-tracking activity. Set at the top of a plateau, the views are dramatic, but that is where the positives end. Owned and run by the local community, the lodge really needs some serious investment and improvement in how it is managed. The main lodge is large and lacks comfort and character - very few comfortable chairs, so people were forced to sit at dining tables when using the bar. The 'infinity pool' was really more of a bird bath. Meals are very limited - one starter, 2 main course options. Somebody asked for a vegetarion option and were told they could have the vegetables that went with the main course. We asked for a glass of wine and were told there was no choice - one white or one red, both very poor - all other choices were only available by the bottle. The chalets were ok but not up to the standard of the other lodges we stayed in - big gaps under the door let in insects and the windows didn't close well which made the room cold, for example. The rhino-tracking was an experience, to say the least. The drive to where we started tracking was about 3 hours and extremely rough and bumpy. The trackers then started searching and it was another 2-3 hours before they located one rhino. The whole day was about 12 hours in total. Can't fault our guide or the trackers for their efforts - they were clearly determined to find us a rhino, and they did! The day was long and tiring and would not be for everybody. I would need to see some big improvements before I could recommend Grootberg as a good choice in Damaraland.

There are positives and negatives to this lodge. Positives first: fantastic location - it’s beautiful. Rooms were comfy and nicely decorated. Staff is beyond wonderful. Memory is a great manager - present and authentic. Serving staff are friendly. Guides are outstanding. Unfortunately our negatives were numerous as well though. We are vegan and informed the booking agent well in advance. Unfortunately she didn’t pass the message on and when we arrived, we caught the kitchen staff off guard. To be blunt, for days we ate essentially bread, fruit salad and 2 really unappetizing plates of pasta with a ketchup-y canned sauce. This was in comparison to everyone’s else’s food which they raves about. This was the fault of booking, and a kitchen staff that needs more training on alternative diets. Other issues were small comparatively - really expensive laundry (truly the most outrageous prices ever) and a lack of plug in for our camper fridge. In conclusion it wasn’t a great experience because it was expensive and we were not proper fed, despite discussing with reservations and kitchen staff. In hindsight, we should have camped at Houda and only come up for a drink :)

Grootberg Lodge is situated at the rim of Grootberg pass. The last 1 km up to the Lodge for the main road is an adventure by it self an requires a 4WD low gear. If not the staff will drive you all the way up and back down. The view from the Lodge and chalets is stunning. Free Wi-Fi and parking, good food and nice staff. But book in advance! A special thanks to Jinneth for her nice service.

Having stayed here for just one night in 2016, it was not long enough, so this time we spoilt ourselves with a 2 night stay. Not the cheapest accomodation on our trip, but we were celebrating a special birthday and we booked ourselves onto a rhino tracking tour too. What a great day we had, tracking and eventually locating a new female rhino. We also saw numerous desert elephants. The extraordinary rainfall meant that the foliage was very lush making it quite tricky to spot animals but also made the driving exhilarating … loads of washed away roads. Lunch was excellent. We loved the bedrooms ‘hanging off the cliff edge’ although care is needed walking to them in the dark. The staff were lovely and made a real birthday fuss of my husband with singing, dancing and a huge cake. The views are stunning, perfect for sundowners. The pool is in a fabulous location but needed a bit of a clean as very slippery, I did brave it but didn’t stay in long!

The main bonus point is the location and the view. The activities are quite expensive, the staff and the food is average. The small buildings are nice but no fridge and no possibilty to charge devices. WiFi very poor. Furniture in main building worn out and not inviting to stay compared with other lodges to read a book for 1-2 hours. Very long trip to reach the lodge, very bad streets. 4x4 is a must.

We stayed in this lodge in the end of March. Absolutely mesmerized with the views which we could enjoy from the pool or the restaurant or our cute balcony outside our room or even from our bed. Very nice accommodation, lovely gardens and nice food. Staff was so friendly, I will never forget them. Wish we had stayed longer.

Staying here now. The outlook is truly amazing. And if that is sufficient for you stay here. And the staff are individually friendly. But other than that, our observations are solely negative. Elephant excursion is twice the cost of a similar one 2 days ago at Kipwe Camp. Attempting the one hour “self-hike”, I found no clear directions after the first sign. We were advised that a guide would visit our dinner table to discuss our wishes, but none did Our “welcome” experience was underwhelming. Dining and other arrangements seem haphazard and under managed. Our room is rather claustrophobic and the 2 seats on the balcony too uncomfortable to loiter on enjoying the outlook. Our game at dinner last night was grossly under-cooked ( not immediately apparent) and left us both with badly upset stomachs. Our over-riding sense of being under-managed with little attention to detail. There is one exception to the lack of attention to detail. On arrival we had to sign at the bottom of a full page of how we accept that the lodge will accept no responsibility for anything no matter how negligent they might be!
