We stayed here for 2 nights & it was wonderful. The Lodge itself is located along of the Grootberg Pass up a very steep hill which if you are not driving a 4x4 could be quite challenging. The Lodge overlooks Klip Valley and the views are stunning. The Lodge consits of a central reception buildng with a small gift shop, an electrical charging area & toilets. The main part of the building is open plan with a bar area at one end, a lounge area and then the dining area. Outside there is a terrace with seating overlooking the Valley and below that a small infinity pool again with stunning views down the valley. The sunset from the terrace on both nights were beautiful. On either side of the central area area the 14 seperate cottages/huts.. The cottages are reached along a path which although concreted with stones is not very smooth & even more difficult to walk along if carrying luggage. The cottages themselves are fairly basic. Luckily the lodge is at the top of the valley & it is quite windy so although there was no air conditioning and no fans by keeping the windows open you get a very cool breeze. In addition there is no fridge, TV or electrical points. If you need to charge anything then that has to be done into the central area. There was coffee making equipment but as there was nowhere to heat the kettle this seemed a bit of a waste. For some reason we were allocated a family cottage which had 2 bedrooms, one at each end of the cottage with an ensuite bathroom with shower inbetween.. The shower worked well with plenty of hot water though the taps were very difficult to turn on & off. If you are looking for luxury this probably isnt the place for you but the lack of facilities in the rooms was part of the charm of the lodge and the views made it all worthwhile. Our room rate included breakfast & dinner - any beers, wines, spirits etc were extra. Breakfast consisted of a cold buffet with eggs etc cooked to order. Dinner consisted of a different 3 course set menu each evening which was excellent. Dinner was served at 7:30pm for all guests. There was an internet connection in the central area but that was a bit flakey at times. The staff, especially Colin, the manager, were excellent, extremely helpful & friendly. We took the 1/2 day desert elephant tracking (leave at 8am, lunch in the bush, returning at 3pm) & this was superb. We saw a herd of desert elephants including their young along with giraffe & zebra & it was well worth seeing & tracking for over an hour. We had a lovely stay at Grootberg Lodge and the views were truly memorable.

Unfortunately, we had only one night booked for this superb accommodation & so we missed out on any rhino or elephant drives but we certainly did not miss out on the excellent views & accommodation & service. Our 'hut' was actually quite beautiful with a little balcony overlooking the Klip Valley; the paths between the huts & main lodge are paved with steps, but manageable even in flipflops! The food & table service was top class & we found the staff very welcoming & friendly & informative. This lodge does have a very steep driveway but very manageable in a 4x4; we did this & glad we did as it added to the excitement of our trip! We found the weather warm & sunny & the wind died down late evening. Due to the itinerary planned for us as we on a self-drive holiday, we had only the one night here & sincerely wish we could have stayed longer. We found the roads through Damaraland very demanding (a lot of corrugations & rough gravel) but we got through it without having to use the 2 spare tyres provided. Beautiful sunsets, nice wine, lovely food, just dreamy!

We were very happy that we booked 3 nights at the lodge! It was really worth it. So, we had plenty of time to enjoy the delicious breakfast, hang out at the relaxing area and pool, do some activities and to see 3 different and very beautiful sunsets. We participated the elephant tracking tour and the scenic drive with sundowner. Both tours were operated in a perfect way with very experienced guides. We learned so much about the wildlife and our patient was rewarded with elephants and their little ones near by. Great experience! We would come back any time !

Very far from everything and beautiful little houses right on the edge of one of the most beautiful valleys you will every see. If you self drive, please know that there is a very very steep road leading up to the road that goes to the lodge when you turn off the main road. There is room to leave your car down the hill and they take you up, which is a good idea. Wifi is iffy and only in the restaurant and pool area, not in the rooms. Some staff not very smiley as often in Namibia so you have the impression that you are bothering them when asking for something but the view is to die for.

As said many times, the location of this lodge is the most important. You have a beautiful view. Since the lodge is situated high up there is always a lot of wind. The houses are small and simple. Our house was full of ants but housekeeping has removed them with the means they have. The food is very tasty. We did the rhino safari and it was fun. It is e a long and bumping trip.
