Standard rooms are spacious with 2 single beds, easily pushed together to make one big kingsize. Two armchairs, a small table, a fridge(what a god send!) and excellent AC.
Ours was on the ground floor overlooking the pool. Was a short walk to the restaurant/bar. No noise disturbances from these areas at night.... The food in the hotel is good, if a little repetitive(but then, its the same in lots of hotels in Gambia) Rice, chips or mash with fish or meat. But the best food we have had on any of our stays. The day-time menu is ok too....but you can only get pizza after 6pm and not on Mondays (!)
The beach-side setting of this hotel is gorgeous. Just a short walk past the pool, over a lawn and you're walking on white warm sand down to the Atlantic Ocean. Safe to swim on some days and the hotel hoists a red flag if its deemed too rough. We went in on a Blue flag day and had great fun wave jumping and body surfing. There's a great guy called Abdou who works at the pool. Do chat to him........he can tell you everything about the history of his country and can keep you up to date with the UK football scores, as he keeps a small transistor radio glued to his ear on match days! We've sent him some AA size batteries to keep him going, as alkaline ones are imported and hence too expensive for many locals to afford.
The entertainment in the evenings was pretty good. Dancers and acrobats some nights and musicians/bands on others...with varying degrees of musical talent.......but you can't fault them for trying!!
Most of the staff here are super, and there a a couple of characters that are guaranteed to catch your eye.........some can seem a bit 'distracted' but if you are friendly and chat to them it seems to have an immediate effect and really does make a difference to the level of service that you get. The only downsides were that the hotel ran out of ice(and you need it in your drink when its 32 degrees!) and various soft drinks ran out for a couple of days until the delivery man arrived. But hey, if this is all we can gripe about in a developing 3rd world country well done Gambia!
We had a wondeful time here........jumped in a green taxis a couple of times and tried some local fare, visited Abuko Forest Park (accompanied by a security guard from the hotel who offered to be our guide)...a good thing to do as they can tell you so much about the area. We had a cab ride through Seregunda which was a hive of colourful activity along a very bumpy road (this is the REAL Gambia!) if we'd gone with the tour guide we would've travelled on the good roads and missed this great experience. Went on the Lazy Day cruise on Boxing day through the mangrove forests. Swam in the water, sunbathed and then had cottage pie and beans for lunch on the boat washed down with champers and brandy (all a bit surreal!) A whole day at sea.....with a bit of fishing thrown in. Perfect and surprising how tiring it is laying around all day!
We will go back to Gambia again with Gambia Experience, as they are the only tour operator that invest money back into the country.....roads, education etc.
Go to Gambia if you want to experience someting a bit different......you'll come back with lots of stories to tell your friends...and you'll want to go back again and again.
Nice evening African entertainments whilst we down some wine with the cool ocean breeze sweeping on our faces. Made some english friends there and we planning to go back.
Thanks to the pool boy Abdou and the head waiter Fuji, you guys are the best!
We received a friendly welcome on arrival and were shown to our room (310) which was in the newer block . I would recommend this block as it appears to be the most modern and the accommodation appears to be better than in the other two blocks. The room was a good size with twin beds, a fridge, A/C, Fan, TV and a nice private balcony with views over the pool and the sea . The towels were changed every day but were of poor quality, stained and on occasion ripped . Breakfast was self-service style with the usual English and continental food available, although I must say it was a bit basic and often not very hot. We never ate at the hotel restaurant in the evenings preferring to walk to Senegambia strip, but you could get 3 course meal for 350 D (approx £9, which I was assured was very good also entertainment was provided every night.
We spent our days by the pool which was clean and quite, most days there were plenty of sunbeds, however the last few days of our holidays ( when the kids must have broken up from school for the Easter holidays) it got bit full and noisy.
The lad who looks after the pool is called Abdul and his knowledge of football is superb and he really was a nice lad, one who would help without wanting something for it all the time.
The hotel is quite a distance from the resort centre, so a couple of points on taxi’s if choosing this hotel.
It was 300 D to get a taxi to the strip, where they would wait and bring you back again. Considering this works out at approximately £8.00 this could prove expensive over the duration of the holiday. After some negotiating we paid 50D in and 50D out, don’t be afraid to barter and state that you will try another taxi - believe me it works. If like us you decide to walk its 30 mins along the beach, but I wouldn’t do it after dark.
I would if I returned go back to the Bijilo and would recommend this nice quiet hotel.
Our opinion of Gambia,
We had a nice time but very much doubt if we would go back to Gambia . Having been to Goa a couple of times we thought we would be prepared for the bumsters , how wrong we were. From the moment we landed it started - Porters after your newspapers so they can sell them and fighting for your luggage, then asking to change £1 coins for notes, even the luggage porter on the transfer provided by the tour operarter hounded us for a tip.
We also got hassled every time we went on the beach, we always tried to talk to them and be polite but this just encouragd them, even on the last day (which they remember) there were lads waiting outside the hotel to say good bye, but by this time you questioned thier intentions. I wont go onto much but unfortunately this has proved our lasting impression of Gambia .
I know they dont have much but I honestly belive along with many others staying in our Hotel that people have been to generouse over the years and now people in Gambia seem to expect you to buy them meals or give them money, I am sure some will disagree, but there probably the ones who are doing it.
Gambia is great if you want guaranteed Sun and with only a 6-hour flight and no time difference it has to be attractive but it isn’t cheap. We worked it out that the money we paid for the Hotel plus our money for food, drink, taxi’s etc we could have gone to Antigua all-inclusive for the same price. - I know which one we will choose in the future.
Finally, if you have made your mind up to go to Gambia and this hotel you have chosen well, you will have a good hotel in a nice location, pity about the bumsters.
Positive points: More secluded from other location so nice and quiet. It is on the Atlantic coast so there are great views. New rooms (apartments) have been built and look nice.
Negative points: Room cleaning was not the best. And the older rooms require lick of paint / modernisation. Breakfast was absolutely appalling. The lowlights of breakfast were Orange Squash (yes squash!) for breakfast. I find this insulting to the guests especially when providing complimentary fresh Orange juice would have been far nicer (the season for Oranges is in December, and is very cheap). They also are cheapskates and provide Nescafe for coffee (no filter coffee). The “fruit salad” was from a can.
Bijilo Beach has everything that we wanted. It’s not too big, but there are enough people around so you don’t feel isolated. The room was good, spacious, fitted out with everything you might want including a couple of easy chairs and a table. There was a spacious safe. Everything worked, room and bathroom. The place was kept very clean, right down to sweeping any sand out daily. There was a drying rack outside on the balcony plus two chairs and a table.
Our room overlooked the pool and the beach; most of the rooms do. The sun set right in front of us. The pool is a fair size, you can certainly swim lengths. The sun deck surrounding it was an appropriate size. There are enough sun beds to go around with a fair number of umbrellas, tables and chairs. Someone is on duty from early morning to sunset and he’ll get you a bed or umbrella if you can’t find one (the hotel has loads of spares). The gardens are well maintained and people are quietly working on them all day long.
Alternatively you can go down to the beach lounging area, and again there are plenty of beds and umbrellas and someone looks after you. The beach is fabulous. I’ll say that again. The beach is fabulous. You‘d go a long way and pay a lot of money to better it. It‘s sandy, wide and shallow. The waves roll in and … it‘s warm!. There‘s staff around to keep an eye on things. There are a couple of juice bars and a beach shop. A bit up the coast are a loads of hotels in Senegambia. Forget the beaches there. They are full of shells and there‘s a ridge you have to struggle over to get to the sea.
The Bijilo Beach restaurant is just about the best, spacious and well furnished and a fine location overlooking the sea. Evening meals are excellent, generous and not expensive. The lunches are OK too. The staff are attentive and well trained. There‘s entertainment every night (I suppose they stop doing that once the season is over). You can walk down to Senegambia (couple of kilometres) and visit the restaurants there, but they’re very ordinary and you wonder why you didn’t use your own.
Negatives? We didn’t find the breakfasts particularly inspiring, although the bread is great. There’s a little store just outside the hotel which has things you might want to buy by way of water, holiday bits and pieces, drink, picketed and tinned food. However there’s no fresh food, nor is there any round about.
If you want to go out and about on your own, there are tourists taxis outside the gate, or you can walk up to the drive and flag down a cheaper local taxi. There’s very little hassle outside the Bijilo Beach, either outside the main gates or on the beach. You really notice the difference if you go up to Senegambia. Hassle every few yards *.
You’ll love Bijilo Beach hotel if you don’t want too posh, but posh enough.
* The hassle lads are just selling. They can be annoying but they are never dangerous. You can deal with hassle very easily. Always smile. Shake a hand if offered. Ignore questions (“It’s a secret”) and close the conversation quickly (“We don‘t need any help“, “Have a nice day”). If they persist, stop and say something like “I’m sorry, we’re having a private conversation”. Keep smiling. Gambia is one of the safest countries on Earth.
We booked through Gambia experience for this hotel in February 2010. We were met at the airport and transported in relative comfort to Bijilo beach hotel where we were met with a very welcome drink and a quick greeting before being shown to our rooms. We had booked two ocean view room whichs were absolutely superb.
Fatou on reception had ensured that we would get adjacent rooms. Both rooms were large with really efficient air conditioning and were scrupuously clean. En suite facilities included a bath and seperate shower. Lamin, our Housekeeper, was amazing - . Often we would find the beds had been made and laid out with beautiful flower displays gathered from the garden around the hotel. Towels were replaced every day, and the rooms were cleaned spanking new.
The highlight of Bijilo beach has to be the staff. They are friendly, ver helpful and went out of their way to be pleasant. Nothing was too much bother. You were met with genuine warmth and smiles. They took their time to get to know you, engaging you in conversation whenever it was appropriate. They were extremely hard working and dedicated - always smart in their colour coded comfortable uniforms.
Our special thanks, for making our holiday so special, go to Fatou,Abdou, and Lamin.
The restaurant was excellent. A huge range and variety of food was offered in buffet style. The food was traditional European through to traditional Gambian cuisine. The food was always presented in a really attractive manner and cooked to perfection.
Adding this as people may not understand why reservation dates are no longer available.
The hotel is very clean and the grounds are beautifully kept.
The main thing that I loved was the peaceful beach with no hustlers hanging around.
We stayed bed and breakfast as we are out most of the day. Breakfast was very nice for me and my family as we ate more than enough.
Would I stay there again, yeah man. Lovely time spent here and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff there. PEACE AND LOVE
The downside here was the wifi issue, was never able to get the wifi in the rooms and its also not good in the lobby .
