A dear friend and I originally had a trip to Senegal planned, however, last minute changes brought us to Gambia for the very first time. We showed up at the Coco Ocean on the recommendation of an acquiantance who lives in Gambia. I have to say that I love the look of it. The ocean views, the palm trees, the series of pools. This was COVID 19 travel so the hotel itself was pretty quiet. The gentleman who greeted us at the front desk on our nightime arrival were courteous and helpful even though we bargained with them regarding the price, they were kind and generous. They showed us more than one room and helped with our luggage. We had two junior rooms. Both were lovely overall, but not equal in styling or upkeep. My friend had a door on her bathroom, while I did not. Unfortunately the water pressure in my shower was aweful, hers was great. I actually just let the faucet run to bath because nothing was coming out of the shower head. There was a large spider web across my bathroom ceiling as well and some of the tile was a little worn. No toiletries I would trust to use, the soap was open and I wasn't sure if it was new. The tile floor was slippery when wet and the shower is open to the rest of the room so the entire floor gets wet. The bed was comfortable, however, it was a split double that kept moving apart as I slept. The tv only had four channels, none were fun, but I wasn't there for tv and my wi-fi was awful. I had to go to my friends room for service. Room rate included breakfast. The wait staff was lovely and accomodating. The food was just ok. The tiny waffles were great though. I experienced a spa day there and absolutely loved it!! Definitely would recommend the Moroccon hammam. Absolutely loved the ocean view from my room and the beach was nice, but could use a bit of cleaning. The sound of the ocean waves reached my room and I was so happy. Also, the sound of monkeys too. While the people and the property are lovely overall there was room for improvement in that some of the rooms need a little maintenance and love and care and the wifi needs work.…
We’ve stayed at different hotels in The Gambia many times. But this hotel is probably the best as well as Sheraton. We loved every single detail of the design and the hotel grounds. The pool was amazing, the sun beds were superb quality. And the spa was the most beautiful and tranquil space that anyone can ask for to relax.
I’ve stayed at different hotels in The Gambia many times. Although this is the most expensive, it is the one I least recommend. I stayed in a higher priced suite ( don’t remember the name) Pros: Gorgeous grounds, swimming pools, and beach area. Housekeeping staff were courteous and efficient. Spa -MAIN area (only) is beautiful. Cons: (1) Some staff discriminate against black people, even those staying at the hotel and paying higher priced rooms, like me and my family. Sadly, the discrimination I’ve experienced comes from Africans, including black staff themselves discriminating against black guests like me. Example : more than one time, I arrived at the restaurant and was waiting to be seated , all the tables seemed to be taken. Black staff ignored me and walked past me several times but immediately came to meet white guests who arrived long after I did. I said nothing and still waited then another white guest arrived and the staff immediately came up to greet them and took them to be seated. Then the same thing happened again with another set of white guests. This was all happening as I stood with my kids, waiting to be seated. A couple of times I said to a waiter “excuse me” and he ignored me or just said I’m coming then walked away. Finally a waiter walked up and greeted me then took us to a table. I don’t ignore discrimination, certainly not when I’m paying that kind of money, so once my kids were seated I asked to speak with a manager and I gave my complaint. I’ve experienced similar discrimination every time I’ve stayed at this hotel. More than one staff person told me that the management (mostly Moroccan) discriminate against the black staff and in favor of the Moroccan staff (I did not see that myself). (2) Bedrooms are not the standard they should be for that price - rooms are more like nice 3.5 star hotel rooms. (3) The bathrooms are terrible. Showers have no ledge and inadequate drainage so in front of the shower gets pools of water after each use. Liquid body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are in covered bowls - very unhygienic. Dispensers would be better. (4) The indoor restaurants are very basic and drab, equivalent of 3-star hotel restaurants. (5) the treatment areas of the spa are substandard - I’d say 3-star, not 5-star. Summary: racial discrimination; outdoor spaces and main area os spa are beautiful and merit the 5-star rating: indoor spaces are terrible for a 5-star hotel (expect 3 to 3.5 star indoor spaces - restaurants, bedrooms and bathrooms, treatment areas of the spa. I hate discrimination and racism whether directed at me or others and for that reason I despise this hotel. I do not recommend anyone staying here. There are other hotels. I’ve always had a great experience at Ocean Bay and never any discrimination and value for money is much better. I’ve never experienced any racial discrimination at any other hotel in The Gambia or at any other 5-star hotel in any country I’ve visited, including China.…
We have been to The Gambia several times, and to Coco Ocean twice, it used to be really good but we understand that it is up for sale! The site is delightful, with a good stretch of beach in front flowing down to the sea, rooms are good, we were in a Club room, spacious with large shower, double hand basins and separate WC. The bed was wide but the mattress was not up to standard and pillows rather disappointing. The maids kept it all very clean. It is a half hour walk along the beach to the local village with many restaurants, some excellent. BUT, apart from the lovely Guest Service girl, the feeling in the large reception is not welcoming, for a start most of the chairs/sofas are far too deep. The check in desk/and all services is indifferent, not really helpful. But the food has lost its way, breakfast does now have self service for fruit, cakes etc but apart from the croissants rather disappointing, coffee/tea service does appear fairly promptly, the whole needs better attention. The waiters are lively and do their best. Dinner is the worst meal, the daily menu varies greatly in content and is over priced. The whole kitchen/dining is not a great pleasure, lunch in the beach bar is adequate but it seems impossible to get a really cold beer! Car service to the village costs 300 dilasi, return it should be free. We will not be going again, every year they promise that the beaches will be swept/cleaned, but at the weekends the locals picnic there and leave everything behind, bottles, paper etc. The hotel seems to make no effort to rake its beach front, the waiter in the beach bar actually threw the beer tops over onto the sand!! The hotel needs a thorough overhaul, better management, and repairs and redecoration seen to. It certainly is not a 5* hotel, I give it only 4 just.…
Love! love! Coco Ocean Spa. I think the spa is the most beautiful and tranquil space that anyone can ask for to relax and unwind. The warm reception you receive as soon as you walk in is a testament to the fine management of the staff. I love the cleanliness, warmth and decor of the place. Also the background music is always relaxing. I will recommend it 100%.
