Tambo Blanquillo is a family-owned and privately run Amazon Jungle Lodge & Wildlife Centre where natural history enthusiasts, keen birders, wildlife photographers and nature travellers can enjoy a truly amazing experience of life in the Amazon rainforest. Tambo Blanquillo Lodge includes six bungalows and 18 triple Tambo Bedrooms nestled in the tropical rainforest. Simple, rustic, yet sophisticated, Amazonic architecture inspired by virgin rainforest, farm-to-table delicious cuisine, and well-appointed rooms combine to create a wildlife experience in Peru unlike any other. Each room has eco-friendly soap, shampoo, conditioner, hot water and mosquito netting. This unique jungle lodge in the Amazon offers a number of wildlife and birding tours based in a private reserve including wildlife adventures to Manu National Park, an area of primary rainforest. Manu is one of the largest protected and most biodiverse areas in the world. This part of the Amazon basin, around Madre de Dios, is hugely important to science and conservation. The reserve originally grew up around the Tambo Blanquillo macaw clay lick almost three decades ago. Thanks to a recent upgrading of our accommodation lodges, we provide our guests with outstanding opportunities for wildlife observation with tours that can be tailored to different budgets. There are three oxbow lakes close at hand, a couple of which hold several Giant River Otter families. There is a high canopy observation tower open to guests, two active mammal clay licks and a 35-mile network of trails that are open all year round and connect our lodge grounds with all of the area’s natural attractions. We have designed some unparalleled facilities that permit the observation of birds and animals in their natural habitat without disturbing their daily activities. At the macaw clay lick, for instance, there is a comfortable hide that has been carefully placed to give you amazing views of Red-and-green macaws that can arrive in flocks ranging from a dozen to more than a hundred to extract minerals from the soil of the Madre de Dios river basin. It is one of the most astounding shows Amazon has to offer. Tambo Blanquillo Lodge has a selection of local wildlife of guides, all of whom are very experienced, capable, knowledgeable and fun, and passionate about what they do. They are all good all-rounders, although most also have their own areas of expertise – photography, birding, herpetology, etc. So if you are thinking of an Amazon rainforest trip, whether for general wildlife or specifically birding, we would be honoured to set it up for you. Check out our special offers and tailor-made options.

We had a great visit to Tambo Blanquillo in September of 2022. The trip combined excellent wildlife viewing and bird watching along with interesting cultural elements. Our guide on the trip was Darwin and we coordinated the trip with Angel Barta from Tambo Blanquillo. We started the trip in Cusco where we acclimated for a couple of days prior to the journey. We meet Darwin in the evening prior to the trip for a pre-briefing and started very early the next morning. We spent the first day driving over the Andes to Cock of the Rock Lodge where we spent two nights. The morning drive went thru the countryside and villages with several interesting stops. Most notably we toured the pre-Inca funeral towers at Ninamarca and had a late breakfast and walking tour/museum visit in Paucatambo. We also briefly stopped at a town specializing in bread where Darwin bought us a fresh baked loaf and we checked out the huge oven. Paucatambo sits at the crossroads between the rainforest area and the Andes and was an important city for both the Inca and the Spanish. Today it has a colorful colonial era core and hosts the annual Virgen de Carmen festival in mid-July. This is one of Peru’s most important celebrations and while you may not be lucky enough to visit during the festival itself the museum gives you a great overview of the event including dozens of the actual costumes. We next headed over the Andes and entered the famous Manu National Park. The park entry area is in the unique high altitude elfin forest with views stretching thousands of feet down the river canyons. The road winds its way down from the crest entering the cloud forest while passing waterfalls and driving thru tunnels and over bridges. We stopped for several roadside walks to view the flora and fauna spotting several birds and interesting plant species in the process. In the late afternoon we arrived at the comfortable Cock of the Rock lodge for a two-night stay. I strongly recommend anyone travelling this way stay more than a single night in the cloud forest. Staying two nights allowed us to view the lodge feeders on two evenings and two mornings with some new sightings each time. These feeders and the lodge grounds themselves have great birding, monkey and small mammal viewing. We walked one of the trails from the lodge but didn’t seem much on that trail – The road itself seemed to offer a better chance of spotting birds/mammals as it is more open. Staying two nights also allowed us to visit the Cock of the Rock lek twice on the layover day (once in the morning and once in the evening). We were able to take additional roadside birding/mammal viewing walks. Darwin knows this area well extremely well and made the most of our cloud forest stay. After our two-night stay we completed the drive to the river port at Atalaya with another roadside walk in a different area of the cloud forest. At Atalaya we were meet by a boat for the journey down the Rio alto Madre de Dios to Tambo Blanquillo itself. This was another interesting journey with bird sightings and views of village and farming life along the river. The boat ride itself was comfortable and we ate a prepacked lunch during the journey. We arrived at Tambo Blanquillo in the late afternoon allowing plenty of time to settle in and recover in time for dinner. We stayed in a Bungalow Suite which was comfortable with nice fans inside the sleeping area which really helped with the heat. Although I don’t recall her name, the cook/camp manager was excellent. The food was very good, and we often took a packaged lunch or breakfast along the excursions. We had different types of fresh fruit beverages with each meal and the bar had plenty of ice-cold beer/soda. We had three full days at the lodge which I would say is about the right amount of time. It allowed us two mornings at the Blanquillo Clay Lick and two afternoons at Blanco Oxbow Lake (our two favorite activities). On the middle day we visited the Canopy Tower, Camungo Oxbow Lake and Blanquillo Oxbow Lake all of which were interesting with some good birding. Tambo Blanquillo does an excellent job protecting the environment and you can really see the results of years of conservation. The clay lick is an amazing experience and was well worth visiting twice. The platform itself is extremely well constructed with two long rows of seats, a shelf/desk in front of the seats for resting gear and restrooms. The raised structure has two long connected sides and is probably over 100 meters in length. It allows viewing anywhere along the clay lick and a long stretch of the forest behind and on either end. In total we saw ~ 10 to 12 different macaw, parrot, and parakeet species and literally hundreds if not thousands of individual birds at the clay lick. At one point we counted over 40 red and green macaws in a single tree. When something would disturb the birds there would be an explosion of wings which was always spectacular and then they would usually settle back down. We also saw a large troop of squirrel monkeys passing overhead along the trail to the viewing platform. On our second visit a sloth climbed into the viewing platform and took a nap overhead while we ate breakfast. Overall, we spotted >120 bird species and > 10 mammal species on this 7-day journey. Everyone involved with the trip from the van and boat drivers to the camp staff was excellent. Darwin deserves a special shout out as he is truly outstanding guide and made the most of the trip. He has a wealth of knowledge having grown up and lived/worked in the region for decades. Angel was also extremely helpful in setting up/planning the trip and we always felt comfortable and in good hands. Check out the Tambo Blanquillo Instagram page and you will see a good representation of photos which they have curated including around a dozen shots from our trip. Finally – It’s worth pointing out the work that Tambo Blanquillo has done over the past decades preserving this part of the Amazon. You can really feel the impact the lodge has made preserving this unique environment.

We're writing the review regarding professionalism as we actually never managed to complete the trip! Attempt number 1 was during Covid and of course it had to be postponed. Angel and team remained in touch and agreed to give us a credit for a future trip. This 2nd attempt was in August of this year and while the overall trip to Peru was fantastic, our attempt to visit Manu was foiled due to a miners strike that blocked the main access road. Once again, Angel and team did their best but decided to put safety first. We tried twice to reach Tambillo Blanqiilo but the road remain blocked. Despite not being able to complete our trip , we reached an amicable settlement on a partial refund which we're satisfied with. Despite not completing our journey, we would highly recommend this company.

Dear Anthony, Thanks for being extra-considerate and mindful during this process. Certainly there is no written manual (just yet!) as per how to manoeuvre optimally around a pandemic and/plus/or unexpected/unforeseeable situations... nonetheless, it has been a true delight to try to work things out with you the best way possible. Best of all was you were able to enjoy the best of Perú and arrive back home safe and sound! It is in cases like this nature can definitely wait. Once again, You really did make it easier along the way, thank you for your kind words. Hope to have you back when you come back to Perú. The doors of Blanquillo always open. Regards to the family. -Ángel & Tambo Blanquillo Team

A group of 4 of us stayed here for 4 nights. Things were just opening up again in Peru after the worst of Covid had passed but most of the Lodges we had stayed at prior to arriving here were empty of tourists apart from us & here was no different. Hardly any staff to be seen but we were a self contained party with our own guides , boat , crew & cook so no problem there. We accessed via a narrow channel off the Madre De Dios river. There it is a quick step up the bank to the gardens & lodge. I reckon it is possible that the creek might be too shallow for access in the dry season but noted another landing point on the main river. Considering the ravages of the pandemic I thought the gardens & bungalows that we stayed in were in pretty good shape. Bungalows are surrounded by lush gardens & well spaced apart. Other accommodation is further away to the back of the gardens & I did not see them. The bungalows are spacious with electricity , attached bathroom , hot water & mosquito netted large beds. Also plenty of room to spread out your gear. The big communal building serves as a dining room , socializing area , bar & a charging area for all your electrical gear. Also here is internet connectivity. A kitchen is attached. Right along one side is a covered passage looking out on the gardens which would be good for bird observation. Unfortunately , it is netted which precludes photography. Surely would be better with hinged opening windows as per most bird hides. There are plenty of birds to be seen around the Lodge. Several trails exist . 2 Oxbow lakes can be reached. One of them , Camungo Lake , involves a short ride across the Madre De Dios followed by a good half an hour trek through the forest. Here we saw some huge Kapok trees. One of them houses a viewing platform reached by a 240 step iron staircase. The lake is a lovely , peaceful spot on which we floated serenely on a wooden platform supported by 2 canoes - a catamaran , in fact. We saw many birds including Tui Parakeets , Striated Heron & Rufous Jacamars. Great experience. The big attraction at Tambo Blanquillo is the clay lick. We went there via the main river & a channel but it can be reached on a trail from the lodge. The clay lick runs along the forested side of the water channel. Opposite is an open area leading to a huge hide on stilts. It can accommodate a lot of people & consists of 2 hides joined by a long walkway , all covered. Swivel seats are lined up all along the viewing area. There is a toilet at one end. To the rear of the hide you can see more birds amongst the forest. Pictures of past visitors sightings are posted on the walls of the walkway. We did not actually get many birds coming down on the lick - they gathered in some numbers in the trees behind but we suspect that predators that were invisible to us were putting them off. However , we saw plenty of Macaws & Parrots & it was most interesting to observe them preening & socializing. The great thing about visiting the Clay lick is that you never know what you may see. Apart from birds , many mammals visit. Although we did not see much in the way of staff our rooms were well serviced & I imagine that normal service will soon be resumed. Some repairs will be needed to the roof of the communal building which leaked in several places when it rained. Definitely a good place to stay.

Hi Keith! Thank you for your remarks. We have been keeping only the necessary resident staff with us, still we are glad you were well attended. As per wildlife activity throughout the time of your visit at the lodge and within the Clay Lick, climate has varied quite a bit this year which may be a reason why bird density looked that way during your stay. March marks the end of the rainy season, which means usually daily attendance of parrots, parakeets, parrotletes, macaws and other individuals to visit the clay wall. Thus, as we know in nature nothing is carved on stone. It can happen that the few parrots you perceived could have been shy to head down and feast on clay may occur due to predators that were invisible being a possible turn off, as you mentioned. As for the birding spots located from the terrace, we included such net to protect bird species, mostly hummingbirds (which enjoy feeding off from the purple verbenas located around the building), from colliding into the netting that separates our main dining room from exteriors. We would like to make it easier for photographs to take place because it is a neat spot to view birds, however it seems that ‘hummers’ do not perceive this thin netting, reason which led us to install the loose net you mention, which acts as a safe barrier against bird species that may fly inwards by mistake. We appreciate your opinion. We will look into a better system that can be safe for birds and photography friendly. Thanks again for your input.

First time in Tambo Blanquillo reserve and lodge. Incredible service, treatment by staff and location. Not a bird watcher before the trip, but an insane amount of animals discovered. Food was very nice, and I recommend staying on the private bungalows with your couple. We Even got to play soccer with staff on a 38C sunday! Highly recommend Tambo Blanquillo experience.

I had the opportunity to go to Manu National Park and stay for 5 weeks as a volunteer at Tambo Blanquillo. It was incredibly amazing. The facilities that far away from society are great. All the people who work at Tambo Blanquillo are so caring and they'll try to do everything to make your stay unforgettable. If you'll go here you'll see all kinds of different animal species, sleep like a baby due lots of insects performing concerts at night, eat like a king or queen thanks to the great cook Rufinna and experience speechless moments of stargazing. All with all, it will definitely be a wonderful adventure.

I take my wildlife travel and photography seriously, so I did lots of research about what would be the right trip for my wife and I to visit the Amazon. There are so many places that look great on the internet competing for your dollar, it's easy to get it wrong, but harder to get it right. I started my search and quickly narrowed down to a couple of ideas and then started to send off some emails and download information off the web. Once I started to do that, there was only one place for us, Tambo Blanquillo, which I'll refer to as TB. We were planning a month in South America and have been to Peru before. So we were looking for a premier wildlife trip, that ran at our pace, with a team that was willing to make adjustments to suit our needs. Our final choice was a single night at the Cock of the Rock Lodge, then 3 days at Amazonia Lodge (both on the Manu Road from Cusco), then a full week at TB. We got Stefano and Luis from TB to arrange every aspect of the trip, from picking us up in Cusco, all the way until they dropped us at Puerto Maldonado 11 days later. Here's the review in detail: ARRANGING THE TRIP All of my email correspondence was answered quickly, and there was no pressure salespitch to sign up. Just helpful people answering questions and giving tips. The website was informative, tons of great pictures, and a downloadable wildlife guide which was really helpful. TB offer package trips for set lengths, ie 3/4/5 days etc, but also arrange that special trip - you only have to ask. TRANSPORT VIA MANU ROAD Leaving day from Cusco and our guide Darwin and our driver were on time in a roomy, modern van. Very clean, air-conditioned and spacious vehicle and we were really happy with the whole drive. It's a very long drive and the road is quite narrow and not for the faint-hearted. But our driver was incredibly safe and I noticed he even cleaned the vehicle out a couple of times when we got out for a stretch. Our guide, Darwin, made sure we exited Peru with some sightseeing on the way, and we stopped at Paucartambo for a nice walk around. COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE I was glad we chose to stay at the Cock of the Rock Lodge. I could have stayed a second night as there was loads of birds to see, but we easily saw our main target, the Cock of the Rock, and also a good display of hummingbirds and mammals at the lodge that evening and in the morning AMAZONIA LODGE After a short drive on the second day, we had to do a short river crossing in a motorised canoe to get to Amazonia Lodge. This was an extra stop I had planned for. It's a rustic little lodge but the hummingbird viewing is spectacular. We really enjoyed our time at Amazonia. It was lesser quality than Tambo Blanquillo but it was an easy three nights - nice easy walks, plenty of interesting things to see. We saw many people only stop for one or two nights and we were glad we stayed longer. The food was simpler than Tambo Blanquillo but we enjoyed it. TRANSPORT TO TAMBO BLANQUILLO If I have a full day of travel ahead of me, I always expect it to be tiring or boring. I have to say, our boat ride down to TB from Amazonia Lodge was the best travel day we have ever had in our life. The boat driver was great and circled back for photos for me a few times. We got a little rain but everything stayed safe and dry. Our driver navigated the many treefalls with ease and our safety was always his top priority. TAMBO BLANQUILLO - Accommodation TB has a variety of sleeping options, from simple tent sites, to a dormitory for the budget traveler to beautiful lodges. I got a guided tour of the dorm and was really impressed with how clean and well-arranged it was, including some great wildlife photos on the walls. The lodges are just amazing, for a place in such a remote location. Really spacious with a small reading/hammock area, a huge bed with canopy netting, and a roomy bathroom area out of site slight separate to the bedroom. We found the bedroom always immaculately clean and it contained everything we needed. TB has wonderful grounds -the gardens were really nice and it was great to see so many birds in the garden. TAMBO BLANQUILLO - Food We never went hungry at TB, and we were really happy with the quality of food. We've done some remote travel and sometimes quality of food is one thing you compromise. Happily at TB food was excellent, every time. At the end of the day, we also got to find a quiet spot in the main lodge for a chat with one of the team, or just read a book. We would have an evening cocktail or two to top off each wonderful day. TAMBO BLANQUILLO - Things to do TB really is a special place and things to do and see is really where TB stands out from the rest. There are 3 lakes, each having different features meaning different bird and animal life. A highlight was the resident Giant Otter population, which we spent about an hour observing as they calmly fished around us without a concern. The TB team will paddle you around the lakes on sturdy boats - they are like platforms fixed on top of two pontoons. We were generally on our own but I am sure the boats could easily fit 8-10 people with cameras. Very good for photographers as you can use a tripod safely, or get down low if needed. TB also has a massive platform way up high in one of the trees overlooking the lake. Very unique, and since we visited I see they have anew canopy walkway. It's these extras that sets TB apart from others. The extra investment for guests to get the most out of their trip. The highlight is the Macaw Clay Lick. There are only two decent clay licks in this part of the Amazon, and the best is right at TB. An amazing viewing facility that can easily house 50 observers, and you get it included at no charge when staying at TB - we went three times and twice we had it all to ourselves and our guide. Seeing 100 Green and Red Macaws flying close around you, and sometimes taking off at once is breathtaking. TAMBO BLANQUILLO - The Team For me, one of the things that made TB special was the team. Both Luis and Stefano made us feel welcome. Everyone was always very helpful and friendly. We knew we were always safe, and the staff worked behind the scenes quietly to make our experience the best it could possibly be. Our lack of spanish language was never a problem, the team were just fantastic. TAMBO BLANQUILLO - Guide We were fortunate to have the amazing Darwin as our guide. A local who grew up not far from TB, Darwin is truly a knowledgeable guide, but also an adventurous spirit. He gave us the tour that only someone who grew up in the jungle could give. His idea of fun on his days off is to go hiking through jungle looking for spots no-one has been before. A great sense of humour, he was a most professional expert who also understands the needs of photographers. TRANSPORT FROM TB TO PUERTO MALDONADO It's a long trip from TB to Puerto Maldonado to catch your flight out. It goes motorised canoe for a couple of hours, an hour van shuttle to the next river crossing, another quick motorised canoe ride, then a comfy van to the airport. It is a long day but we got a good breakfast and also a packed lunch and snacks which was a thoughtful and quality touch. The transfers were made with a minimum of fuss, and each vehicle we used was safe and we arrived in plenty of time for our flight. I will come back to this post and add some pictures. If you have questions, please ask me. Our time at Tambo Blanquillo was one of the best experiences ever with a fantastic group of people that have brought excellence to the wilderness. I would recommend them to anyone. Thank you Luis, Stefano, Darwin and the team. I hope our paths cross again.

Hola Craig, It's been a total delight to read what you had to say about your experience with us. First of all, thank you very much for your words. Even though we are highly passionate about Tambo Blanquillo Private Nature Reserve, you insight is definitely encouraging for us in making the Reserve a better place day by day. We are making company changes for the upcoming season to allow more avid nature lovers the chance to discover the magic within our forests like you and Pam encountered. Thank you for sharing your images, they are very unique and I am sure they can be very helpful for our marketing/conservation purposes. Is there a chance we could include some of your insights in our publications? I think this could help point out in the right direction for travelers in searching process to find a bit of what you encountered. I tried downloading your images, however it seems the link is not available anymore. Do you think you could hand them over via email. Took some time to scheme through your website and was very impressed by the quality/uniqueness of your footage. We really hope yo have you again with us soon, Thanks and best regards!

I traveled to Peru for the entire month of September 2019 with 2 friends. We had researched our options for the rainforest part of our trip and decided on Tambo Blanquillo. Every aspect of the trip exceeded our expectations. Our guide was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. The staff at the lodge itself was wonderful and saw to our every need, whether it was the food, accommodations, or transportation to and from the surrounding sites. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We signed up for the 6 day/5 night option and could have stayed longer. Just make sure you are flexible and ready for the heat and insects. The mosquitoes really liked me, so if/when I return, I will be sure to use 100% DEET! The first day was quite comfortable temperature-wise as it had rained buckets the night before, but eventually, the heat did get to me. Bring something that cools you off. We stayed in the bungalows, so I can't comment on the main lodge. We wanted our own bathrooms, and for the jungle, we all found them luxurious.

Hello! Its wonderful to hear so highly from your experience. Pristine, immaculate, with installations well preserved, Blanquillo is unbelievable. However, as you experiened, we could never provide our service at such level if it would not be because of our focused personnel, commited guides, and everybody involved in our service-staff. Warmth and generosity are tokens the forest provides for all of us. Certainlly being in the tropical jungle provides us with innate characteristics like acute heat, hummidity and mosquitoes but also issues us aspects that exceed our expectations, like you said! Thanks for sharing with us. We were delighted with your stay and hope to have you back sometime!

I found every part of my stay at Tambo Blanquillo exceptional. To start with the basics the grounds are beautifully landscaped with flowers galore. The accomidation is exceptionally clean and comfortable if you are lucky to stay in a bungalow you'll be treated to a delightful private retreat looking out onto lush flowering gingers and hibiscus. The staff are amazing, every meal was delicious and served with freshly prepared juices of jungle fruit and a sweet treat I felt like royalty. Also to go beyond my expectations plentiful hot water and good wifi. But it was all the attention to the small details that realy made my stay exceptional. I feel there has been alot of thought put into the lodge so guests can make the most of the wildlife. Simple details like the purple flowering bushes at the front of the lodge so you can watch butterfly's humming birds and large bumblebees bees while you relax in the cool. You are only a 5 minute walk from a mammal clay lick that is set up with mattresses and mosquito tents so you get the best chances of seeing Tapir, other mammals and if you lucky a giant ant eater. The canopy viewing platform a top a 400 year old tree, mackaw clay lick ,two lakes and all the trails surrounding the lodge were all top notch I had the experience of a life time. I saw giant otters, sloths, Cayman, capybara, so many types of birds. I couldn't have wished for a better jungle experience. Thankyou everyone at Tambo for your hard work I wish you all the best and hope to see you again in the future.

Response from Luis R, Guest Relations Manager at Tambo Blanquillo

Hola Erica, Thank you for your opinion. It is certainly gratifying to be part of your jungle memories. Experiences like yours are a main reason why we put so much into effort and hard work in keeping Tambo Blanquillo Private Reserve pristine, organized and magical (especially in the small details). You certainly have touched our "soft-spot" when mentioning you would like to be back. The lodge, workers and guides trully appreciate every guest and share such mystique in sharing the inspiring energy Blanquillo has to offer. Pictures, videos or even words sometimes fall short when attempting put into perspective the magnitud of this natural wonder. We couldn´t be happier to know that you were so satisfied and able to observe mammals, reptiles, birds and took the time to visit our 6 nature attractions... Thank you for your stay, we hope to have you soon!

We had a fabulous time during our stay at Tambo Blanquillo. Our guide Darwin was excellent and really made our visit special. Very knowledgeable, passionate about nature and a lot of fun to be with. The staff were very welcoming, helpful and friendly and made the whole experience very special. The bungalow accommodation was very comfortable and the and meals were excellent. Fabulous location in the middle of the jungle. The places to visit around Tambo Blanquillo to see the wildlife, are all very close ,which meant we were able to see so much and still have plenty of time to relax. A very special place to stay.

Hi Henry, Thanks a lot for the amazing review! All of our guides (including Darwin) are specially selected and trained so they can offer the best adventure possible. They contribute enormously to make the trip worthwhile. Our staff has been with us over a long period of time in which we empower and train them to help us pursuing the sustainability of the area. I can see you loved Rufina's meals! You said it: BEING CLOSE TO THE ATTRACTIONS IS VALUE FOR MONEY, AS YOU CAN SO SEE MUCH AND HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO RELAX. I will pass on the review to the team. Thanks a lot, we hope to have you with us again soon. Best regards!
