I'll start off by saying that the hotel is in the most stunning location and although my review is for 3 stars it wouldn't stop me going back for the location alone. As we went during Covid and I am very conscious some of the areas we thought were lacking was probably due to that, I wouldn't read too much into it unless you are planning a stay soon. We stayed in a dog friendly room and changed rooms on the second night due to being in room 18 which was right next to the entrance, noisy enough to wake 6 months pregnant me and the dog every time someone came in or whenever a car pulled into the car park. They were very accommodating though and changed our room to a much quieter room which helped. The rooms themselves were very standard, I was really disappointed in a lack of mini fridge with fresh milk and no herbal teas at all. It was also not as clean as I would have expected at this time. But absolutely fine if you are planning on lots of time away from the room and just need somewhere to rest your head. I wouldn't stay here if I wanted to spend any time relaxing in my room. The hotel itself was beautiful and the staff seemed friendly and willing to help although I think quite a few of the wait staff were new. Breakfast was very different on both days, the first day we felt service was lacking a lot but the second day it was much better. Food was good the first day and not as good the second day. We ate at the restaurant on the first night and the starters and desserts were really lovely, we actually came back from dessert the second night. We were forgotten a few times when we asked for drinks and menus but that's fine. As I said before really great location and I think most of my points would be covered when we are out of these strange times. Lovely to be able to take the dog and that the hotel was so friendly towards them.

A beautiful setting, clean and comfortable rooms. Staff helpful, polite and efficient. Good menu, food and prices - I hope the COVID restrictions allow the hotel to operate at its full capability soon!

A few years ago I was a prolific reviewer, feeling that I should contribute in recognition of valuing the reviews. That changed when sadly so many reviews appeared to be ill founded or even vengeful. Today , I feel motivated to make a review. We had booked our wedding anniversary stay and dinner at the Master Builders well in advance and we were perturbed to find that a series of very poor reviews were posted in the two weeks before our visit. I decided to e mail the hotel to ask for reassurance and received a courteous prompt reply and we retained our reservation rather than cancel. We have just returned from a wonderful stay, everything we would have wished for. From the moment of our arrival at reception we received pleasant, prompt and efficient service and were delightedly surprised to find that our anniversary stay had been noted and recognised both on arrival and at dinner. We had booked the Agamemnon room in the main house, it was lovely with dual aspect windows overlooking the river. We had an excellent 3 course dinner in a lovely setting with attentive attention from Carl. Breakfast was equally nice, perhaps a little slow but we were in no rush and the staff were all very pleasant. Bucklers Hard is a beautiful place and we could not have made a better choice. I feel that some of the earlier reviews are ill founded and do a great injustice to the pleasant and hard working staff we encountered.

We received a very warm welcome from the reception staff on arrival. Our room was of a good size, the bed was comfy, the towels were fluffy.... We had dinner in the restaurant, the food was very well presented and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The staff were friendly, courteous and attentive. The service may have been a bit slower than in some places we have visited but that just made for a leisurely, relaxed meal ... The staff were very efficient at breakfast and a good selection of food was offered. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in a stunning location don't be put off by some of the reviews you read here.

Having stayed at The Master Builder’s a few times last year, we were delighted with our first post-lockdown return visit this year. All the important aspects of our stay were as good as ever. Our room in the old part of the hotel remained full of unique character. We had excellent dinners on two consecutive nights with different choices for each; and the quality of the food served was perfect. The breakfast was satisfactory in the range & quality of dishes served. The hotel staff were welcoming, helpful, attentive, and showed no evidence of the pressure of work which we gather may be present these days. We really appreciated all the steps taken by the hotel towards Covid security. The whole experience at The Master Builder’s felt like a “safe haven” for us. On checking out we made a reservation to return again.
