The first hiccup occurred when, following the provided, recommended driving instructions from Orchid Bay staff, we arrived at the first ferry to find it in dry dock for repairs. As this was the #1 route recommended by them, I would have thought they would inform us of an issue like this. We then tried to contact Orchid Bay via telephone, and were told when we arrived the number we had been calling had changed, yet we, again had not been advised. It was reassuring when I did receive a prompt response to the email I then sent to let them know we’d be late. The ferry issue translated to an extra 3 hours of driving, and navigating through the backroads of Belize in the dark. The provided instructions were easy to follow though, and there was really only one road, so we drove right to Orchid Bay. Check-in was smooth with Damaris and we just dropped our bags at the Casita then proceeded to the restaurant for dinner. The food here is good, the portions generous; the menu isn’t huge, but everything we tried was well prepared and tasty. The ambiance of the restaurant/office did take me a little aback, and was not what I expected. It reminded me of a little back-country pub, which I suppose is what it actually is in essence. The really disappointing thing about our stay was the condition of pretty much everything. At first glance it looks great, but when your really look, there’s an air of neglect and shabbiness throughout. I imagine it’s been a difficult couple of years through Covid, but a little elbow grease and attention to detail could go a long way! Our Casita appeared clean, and relatively well equipped, but I was shocked when we climbed into bed and saw a hole in the sheets. The grout on the floor of the shower is black, and the taps on the sink are eroding; there is residue on the tile floor in the living room and bedroom from area rugs that have been removed, but the real kicker was the grime on the dishes and utensils in the kitchen! We had to wash everything before we used it…. Housekeeping apparently “prepares” your unit for you before arrival, but if you want service during your stay you have to request it, and if you want extra/clean towels there’s an extra charge…. Wow! I thought this was a “resort”. They are using this term pretty loosely in my opinion. There were paddle boards and kayaks available for guest use, but only one paddle, and the second kayak wasn’t seaworthy anyway. During our stay, we also noticed several large local families visited the beach and facilities, left their garbage behind, made use of the limited resources while casita guests paid good money for the privilege. Everywhere we looked, the neglect was disappointingly obvious. The cushions on the lounge chairs by the pool were filthy, and one in particular appeared to be covered in black mold, the pool itself could use a good scrub too. There were uneven boards, and missing or broken lights on the pier, and the benches and wooden beach furniture could all use a quick refurbish. I fell kind of bad, like I’m “dissing” the place, but I really do feel that with a little effort Orchid Bay could go from disappointing to spectacular! The setting is beautiful, the beach is calm, ocean water is warm, and very shallow, but still pleasant to cool off in. We didn’t do any excursions, and weren’t actually given much information on what might be available, but we were happy to just relax and sip coconut rum on the beach. After the rather extreme journey to get here, we expected better, and do not recommend this “resort”.

David and Damaris do a great job of making everyone feel special. We took a family of 8 with 3 casitas. All the casitas have full kitchens and two air conditioners. The water is clean and drinkable. They also have bottled water. David provided tours to Lamanai Ruins, Belize Reef, and San Pedro. We were also able to go outside the reef and fish (4 poles) for our dinner that night. The food and portioning at Trade Winds is excellent as David has a huge food & beverage background. Everything on their website is accurate, I’ll be going back for more!!

I love this place. It is safe and clean. The people are friendly and helpful. The casitas are magnificent. You can prepare your own meals in your kitchen but it’s more fun to go to the Tradewinds restaurant. I don’t drink alcohol anymore so I focused on the juices; Soursop, Pineapple, watermelon and passion fruit were all available and delicious. If I were inclined to drink I might have added some rum or tequila to this juices. The menu was great but I usually went with the specials. a boat ride to see the sunset or Cerros is available and everyone was happy.

We arrived Holy Saturday afternoon and stayed in a 2 bedroom family house, which accommodates 6 people. 1. Nothing is as nice as is seen in the pictures advertised. There is no sandy beach. The pool is extremely small. The grass beside our house needed to be cut and the leaves raked. You cannot access the pier at night because there are no lights anywhere. 2.We had to ask for towels even though a "family house" should come with enough towels for a small family. At one point one of the employees said we'd have to pay for extra towels. 3. We were unable to use the pool, which is very small, because it was always crowded with day guests. When they left, it was always dirty and it appeared that they did not clean it at all. 4. They allow pets but I couldn't have my little dog outside because day guests had their aggressive dogs on the compound. 5. Flies were everywhere like swarms of bees waiting to attack. Even inside our house! Thousands of them covered the floors and walls. You wake up to this in the morning! 6. There were no cleaning services! Even though we were there from Saturday to Monday, no one came to change our sheets, towels or take out the garbage. 7. The dining table had a lot of cobwebs and the curtains are dirty and stained. There are a few other complaints (ac remote batteries are dead etc.) but those are the major issues. I am well traveled. I've been to many many resorts throughout Belize, which have always been satisfactory to exceptional based on the prices paid. For the exorbitant cost of the family house, I expected FAR better. It does not even meet the standard of being satisfactory. Also, I thought the resort would make the hours of traveling there worth it but it definitely did not. I am extremely disappointed and dissatisfied with my stay at Orchid Bay. I would never recommend that place to anyone.

Did not stay at the resort, but drove there for the water. It was a long dusty road, 2 ferries, but even those offered water and river views on the drive. It was a hot day, but the water and the view of the bay made it all worth it. We hung out on the pier, swam, drank beers, and even saw dolphins. It's a great place for family fun, the water is not deep, great for lounging.

Orchid Bay Belize is located on the south side of the Corozal Bay in Belize; outside of Corozal town anywhere from 22 to 45+ minutes (depending on the location of the two hand-cranked ferries when you arrive at them and how hot it is outside for the ferry workers!). The road can be from decent compared to Belize roads (that means bad country roads for most others) to bad Belize roads depending on the time of year. However, once you get there you will find a very pretty, very quiet placed to enjoy just getting away. There is an onsite restaurant with a swimming pool and activities. There are many types of accommodations including bay front casitas, a bed and breakfast, and many private homes. If you have a vehicle then you can explore local ruins and out of the way destinations such as manatee breeding areas in the lagoons nearby. Tarpon have been known to be caught in the waters right in front of the bay and you can always sail or paddle board. It's a bit out of the way, but for any adventurer, it's worth the effort. If your local; go for the weekend for some peace and privacy.

Yes, the drive there is adventurous. But once you got there and in your cabana, all was forgiven. The lodgings are very nice. We especially liked the screened in porch and the bikes we could use. The beach is OK- it is hard to swim cuz it’s so shallow. Pool is small but refreshing. Tradewinds, the bar/restaurant,is the hub. This is where you get all food and bevs- there is no quickie mart to run to. The service is nice, but time is not an issue. Most food we ordered took 45 minutes to be prepared. So, highs and lows.

Mainland Belize has a small number of beaches in spite of its long coast line. This is one of the few and is located on the remote Chetumal bay. This is one secluded, out of the way, little gem that indeed makes the long trip from Bze City worh it. One can see in Orchid bay why Huxley said Belize would be a world´s end. Not necesarily a bad thing. The sea is a feast for the eyes. Its water ranges from white to a placid greenish-turquoise; not blue. Its temperature just about the right type of warm to be refreshing. The restaurant well stocked with amenities. A nice place to chillax even if it rains. The hotel staff is as warm as they come providing the right mix of service and chat, keeping distance when required and proximity when needed. The "casitas" or huts have everything for a confortable and cool stay. Bring groceries, though, if you want to use the kitchen and crockery. The night is nicely lit by the bustle of nearby, but not chokingly close, Chetumal in the North and Corozal in the west.

Response from Orchid_Bay_Resort, Guest Relations Manager at Orchid Bay Resort
Responded Oct 16, 2018
We want to thank you for your gracious review of Orchid Bay Resort. You have described so eloquently many of our favorite features on site. We are in a remote location in Belize, yet close enough to enjoy the nearby towns and best activities. We certainly keep all the amenities you might need on hand, though as you mention, a stop for groceries on the way from Belize City is also a nice feature which we offer with our shuttle service. Nothing is more relaxing then settling into your cabana and basking at the stunning turquoise waters glistening in the sun. We hope you will come back and see us again.
