As the story goes, the mythical Lamarck University or Lam U was named after the French scientist Jean Baptiste Lamarck and was devoted to the study of all things natural until it was closed in 1975. Fortunately, Lam U has been resurrected to her former glory by the vigorous entrepreneurs of Vietnam's Sun Group and the starchitech, Bill Bensley in the form of JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. This hotel in Phu Quoc, Vietnam is unlike any other hotel or resort in Vietnam. It features 5-star luxury, a quirky style and an unparalleled location on the pristine beaches of Phu Quoc.

Nothing but relaxing. Exa cutely what we were looking for.
After your typical hectic trip to Europe in August, we just wanted to go somewhere and just relax.
From the moment you arrive that's what you get.
The beach has full time cleaners just going up and down cleaning a leaf thats in the water.
The pools are well maintained and most importantly a big plus for us was an Adults only pool.
It was policed constantly.
Any child would reach a few metres from the edge and it was a zero tolerance, so the adults area was exactly that, an adults area.
The rooms are exceptional in cleanliness, we have never stayed at a hotel where so much time is spent by the staff in cleaning your room.
Every corner of the room is covered.
We had a small Garden Courtyard going out towards the Adults pool, Red Rum or the beach (Room 3113) and everyday a gardener would enter and collect any leaf dropping.
Pricing in the restaurants was fair and average, we have nothing to complain about. The only restaurant that we booked but ended up cancelling was Pink Pearl, I have no doubt the food would be very nice but we have eaten at some exceptional fine dining Restaurants from the hands of some highly recognised world class chefs for less that what was offered.
However a beautiful building.
To maintain a property like this requires 24 hour constant work.
It holds its old world charm perfectly.
Now there is no way I will remember all the staff but other than the property itself the staff is what makes this property more pleasurable to stay at.
Just to name a few but including all, from Joan and Varun that supervise the food outlets, to Chloe that makes sure that the Adults only pool is enforced, to Nhat and Gracie from Guest Services and then there's Minh and Duc at Red Rum.
Like I said, its basically everyone that works at the JW Phu Quoc.
Thank you so much for a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

This place is amazing!!! Our friends had visited prior to our trip to Vietnam and they just raved about the JW Marriott in Phu Quoc. We really couldn’t comprehend how amazing it would be, but we included it in our trip to Vietnam. It’s absolutely a destination in itself, and in our opinion, the absolutely best part of Phu Quoc. Their beach is amazing white sand, there is a constant pleasant breeze, and workers continuously keep the beach clean (no easy task in Phu Quoc). The multiple pools are beautiful, there are plenty of beds by the pool and on the beach. You don’t have to pay extra to use equipment such as boards for paddle boarding. We were told the occupancy was full, but it really did not feel over crowded. The property design is stunning down to the last detail and the staff are so incredibly pleasant. A special thanks go to the Assistant Director of Food & Beverage, Varun Mahendru. He was so incredibly helpful and gracious to us while we were there!! It seems he is a tireless worker, always out and about speaking with the customers and helping to ensure their stay is as good as he could make it. He greatly contributed to our having a wonderful visit!! And the food really was exceptional! We didn’t try all the restaurants, but Red Rum provided us with the best meal we had in Vietnam, and the french bakery was also great. We also should rightfully mention Katerina, the Marketing Communications Manager, who greeted us kindly and personally toured us around the property. If you are planning to visit Phu Quoc, this is THE place to stay. If you are coming to Vietnam and are thinking of skipping Phu Quoc, consider putting it in your itinerary specifically to visit the Emerald Bay resort.

Xin Chao!!
Where to begin! To be fair I am Ambassador Status but I dont think that had anything to do with how the hotel operates. The property runs like a well oiled machine. The breakfast buffet was magical & fed us for really the entire day. Our room was a standard guest room (didnt ask for upgrade) and that was amazing for 2 people with a nice walk out to the beach. The staff genuinely seemed to care about your experience and wanted to ensure you felt special. We went to the Pink Pearl for my birthday-AMAZING. When I arrived back at my room there was a nice cake, bottles of booze as well as somel peppers from the pepper farm. Tam, a customer experience manager, looked out for us, helped us with things to do, where to go and was so kind our entire stay. Mat our housekeeper was sweet & Sunny who works in the Chemistry Bar made us great drinks & made us feel at home. All overseen by Varun, the Director of Food & Beverage, who on the date we left (super early) he had a togo breakfast waiting for us. There are so many other ittle things that made up for it all. Too many to list here. The resort is large and i think was at capacity when we were there but it felt like you had the place to yourself. It's a remote location so if you do want to go off compound i suggest renting motorbikes-10 USD a day. If i have 1 thing to offer suggestions about is the pool service is very slow or non existent. I have stayed at many many high end resorts in SE Asia and this is the gold standard.

Wonderful!!
From the moment you check in you know this place is special, Jane our check in assistant was tremendous! Lots of info on the hotel and very numerous, taken by buggy to our 1 Bed Villa ( upgraded Marriott ambassador) Jane showed us around this wonderful room, even took the time to bring back some mosquito spray, nice touch!

Room very tastefully decorated, colonial with no expense spared, iron / board/ lovely bed and living room/ big tv, coffee machine etc etc

The resort is clean and has everything you can want, the staff are truly special!! Both Sunny and Minh in the department of chemistry bar were entertaining great mixologists, really nice place to have a beer/ cocktail and chill to some nice sounds.

Breakfast, another wow!! Served by Nancy and team, ocean view and too many dishes to list!! Western/ Asian/ egg station/ actually one of the largest selection of breakfasts I’ve ever seen...

30 mins from airport and metered taxi cost 320 and was easy to get.

Beech clean and lots of beds, communal pool quiet and again service exemplary

Fine dining not cheap but again high quality, drinks beer and cocktails range 100 to 400 per drink but has happy hour but one get one.

Would allow 50/75 USD per head for dinner, hotel had a seafood BBQ buffet on Fridays looked impressive lots of choices and 1 million ++ a head

Overall wonderful place well managed well kept and a truly wonderful place to visit.

This is a truly a one of a kind place! We had room 4205 in the Bird Building. It was perfectly situated in front of the beach, next to Red Rum Beach Restaurant and between the Shell Pool and Sun Pool. While I was initially disappointed that we weren’t upgraded, I should not have worried - The room was huge! Two double beds with two chaise lounges, plenty of room, and a large balcony with a large lounge seat outside facing the beach. It’s technically not beach view as it sits behind the tree line, but we feel lucky to have had such a great room given that we booked a regular two bed room. The JW is the most unique hotel we’ve ever been to - the architecture, tiling, woodwork throughout the resort is amazing. Also we received Outstanding service. The Management team learned our names after the first day and they would check on us regularly while we were out and about. Varun especially was very gracious and kind! Also Joan took care of us at the deptartment of chemistry and at the pink pearl restaurant. Khang shared details of the resort with us during Xmas Dinner Buffet and he was really funny! The food throughout the resort is delicious and the service is for the most part, prompt. Regular turn down service and thorough cleaning by the housekeeping staff. The Revive Package at the spa was fantastic. My daughter and I both enjoyed it immensely. The gym facilities are state of the art, large gym, and super clean - I actually Wanted to work out! Also The beach was very clean with soft white sand and the beach is private for JW guests.Over the week that we were there, the surf varied from being completely calm to small waves. We did notice that on the rougher surf days, there was more plastic waste on the beach but the staff did a great job cleaning. The one frustration is that some staff do not speak English so communication was difficult at times, however that is the only niggle that we could find. The resort is amazing, and it is still relatively young, so it will get better and better over time. Highly recommend!

This is not a resort. Going here is like visiting a avid collector of artefacts and items from long time ago, walking around on some ancient campus grounds Yes it has a theme that goes well with the layout of the place and makes you feel that the place is much bigger and diverse than it in reality is
However, The hardware and the F&B are of international world class level. And there is something fine for every single cuisine or taste. Rooms, suites are light, spacious and most importantly well maintained, which is quite a task when being so close to the sea and exposed to the elements 24/7.
There is so much to see and explore in the resort itself, that there is hardly any need to go outside.
The Pink Pearl restaurant is a pleasure for the eye and the taste buds, and so is the coffeeshop in the main street of the 'village'. This is definitely a place you can stay for 5-7 days without getting bored a single minute.
The sea is quite clean from plastic where the resort is. The staff do an excellent job to keep it that way.
Breakfast is large, the offers are very wide, and thanks to the building layout do not feel intrusive or busy, despite the number of guests coming at once. However, if you are not into crowds, the room services are equally punctual, fresh and pleasant to have in the comfort of your own room and suite.

My husband and I purposely saved Phu Quoc for the end of a two week journey through beautiful Vietnam. Being a Titanium Bonvoy member we were given a suite upgrade opportunity. If you too have the option, you must choose the Turquoise Suite as there are only 10 and they are THE BEST rooms at the resort! Where do I start? 15 foot ceilings, 1,100 sqft of just beauty. Gorgeous bathroom with amazing tub and showers: So beach front that I could hear the waves with the door shut. It’s just gorgeous. All of the other rooms look nice as well but I would def opt for an ocean view if possible. There are several pools, one adult only, never too crowded and plenty of beach chairs. The beach is perfect white sand, gentle, calm water perfect for swimming and sun bathing. It’s ideal and location is stunning. The hotel offers sev restaurants which are all good and the breast buffet is amazing. Def not typical Vietnam cheap though, these are American prices. They offer a lot of activities if you are inclined and the service, as all over this country is top notch. Excellent service and friendly efficient staff/. Would def recommend to others to come here!

The resort is seemingly a reconstruction of a university from a by-gone era. The attention to detail in building this myth is admirable. We booked directly with Marriott and their reservation team were helpful and supportive in light of current coronavirus inducing flight disruptions that caused flight cancellation and flight changes. We had the hotel car pick up from the airport. Seamless journey with cold hand towels, water, snacks and WiFi in car. The driveway leading into the resort starts off the myth of Lamarck University. The lobby was impressive and full of nick knacks of collegiate memorabilia. Each buildings are named and themed under different departments to give fuller allure to the myth. The rooms are high ceiling, balcony overlooking the ocean with bathroom and toilets separated.

We had daily breakfast at Tempus Fugit - department of architecture. Buffet was amazing filled with variety from Western to Asian food. We also ate at Red Rum, seas food based restaurants. Food were good and portions big. The highlight was Pink Pearl fine dining. We had the 4 course surprise menu and during dinner was treated to delightful music from singing performances and a tour of this restored ‘Dean’s House’ including their basement wine cellar. We had drinks at ‘Department of Chemistry’ and also had a wonderful spa treatment at Chanterelles Spa.

The GM was always available to ensure guests’ needed were attended to. Crystal from Tempus Figit was a delight every morning making sure we had a relaxing breakfast. The pool (adult and kids pool) were wonderful. Resort had an abundance of activities for kids and families.

Overall, this was an amazing reprieve getaway. We spend 5 days at the resort without setting foot off the ground. This was a wonderful stay and we look forward to being able to return again soon.

The front desk team were so helpful during all the trauma we faced with flight cancellation. Thank you so much JW Marriott Team!!

After 3 nights at the JW Marriot (one of which we deliberately extended) it’s hard for us to determine wether the establishment or the service turned out to be the winner of this vacation.

The resort is astonishing. Architecture and furniture are at the top of their game, everything is curated to an extreme level of detail, both in and outside the rooms.

The establishment offers a series of activities that range from origami to scuba diving, good for both couples and families. There are also a spa and a games room which are great for those cloudy days. 3 large pools also fill-in when the sea is too rough to swim into.

Restaurants (there are 3), café (with a bakery), and bar, serve different types of cuisines, very high quality food and incredibly well crafted cocktails.

Admittedly, not the whole staff is fluent in english, but their welcoming and pleasing ways cover up for what was lost in translation.

We had a few “incidents”, really of minor degree, as for example the unavailability of certain dishes, or accidentally over-ordering without being notified that the we were ordering way too much for just two people. The staff handled this in the best way possible and probably like we never experienced in any other resort. When it came to unavailable dishes (it was a seafood buffet and they ran out of oysters after only 1 hour), the head chef gifted us 2 (yes, 2) whole lobsters as an apology. In our other incident where we simply ordered too much food, they didn’t make us pay for what we felt was extra and could not manage to eat.

There is not much more we can say other than thanking the staff for the amazing experience and providing 5 stars.

Highly recommended

This is a 7 star resort with 3 star food hence the four rating, such a shame - it could have been absolutely perfect. I thought some time before posting this review and here it is:

The property, rooms and service were stunning
The room was whimsical with great attention to detail
The beds extremely comfy, water pressure and bathrooms amazing
Housekeeping is a delight with notes each night and absolute perfection
The chairs at the pool and beach were in abundance
Almost everything you expect in a true luxury experience was here
The theme is fun and as advertised
The gym modern and extremely well equipped
The staff is accommodating and there is a never say no mentality, which is perfect
English levels are excellent for Southeast Asia
The SPG/Marriott program works well as if you were in a city hotel, great benefits
Almost everything was perfect,

Except:

The food.
The hotel does not celebrate Vietnam
The two visible chefs in the resort are French and Mexican
That would be OK, but ...
Almost everything at the buffet was luke warm to cold
The food was bland at best in all the restaurants, no punch or spice to anything
There is no technology to keep the food warm, as per my pictures where the food lays on cold plates and lamps which provide light and almost no heat are above
At the dinner buffets numerous people were pre-cutting the food and moving it around making it even colder, not their fault they just were not trained properly
Once we discovered the Banh-Mi's at the breakfast buffet we were fine but had to go from Station to station to find the right pork, chili, cilantro and Thai basil inserting it into the sandwich and finally having Vietnamese flavors.

We told the management about this during our stay and they either did not care or had no way to fix it. Their solution was to give us free cold food, which just did not cut it for us

Overall I have nothing bad to say about anything other than the food, and if you do not mind bland cold food then this place would be absolutely perfect for you!

From my side it really took a full week away from our holidays as food is one of the most critical components when visiting such an exotic location, I do not travel to Vietnam to eat bland guacamole…… especially on a luxury stay where there are no other options to eat.

They do have adjoining rooms, as well as villas with multiple rooms and even villas with pools. Those are expensive by Vietnamese standards but cheaper than a modest hotel room in NYC or Tokyo.

it ranges from 300,000-400,000 VHD, which is about $15-20 at the high end. They don't take CCs which is important, and as always, especially airport to JW - negotiate rate first. One of them tried to get 450,000 at the end from a friend of mine.

I just returned from this resort last week, the concierge during breakfast one day mentioned they will be nearly at capacity during the upcoming holiday (Apr 30). This could possibly be the reason but I would definitely reach out them directly.
