Finding great places to stay wrote a review Jun 2022

5/5…. This is a beautiful part of Australia and a beautiful boutique hotel experience. We stayed in room 308 and loved having the high, beachfront view from a large and very usable balcony. The bedroom / living room is beautifully furnished, bathroom large and really well appointed. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The best part is the carefree way you stay - everything is taken care of from breakfast to dinner. Perfect sunshine for a winter stay.

Hotel's Favorite
Stayed for 4 nights the week before Christmas with 3 adult children. We booked 2 rooms which were side by side on the ground floor. The hotel is great, beautiful location right on the beach. Loved the free bikes and took them for a ride to Kingscliff. Only downside was dinner being included every night. There should be an option without dinner. The menu was repetitive, the chairs incredibly uncomfortable and the restaurant service average at best. But we have stayed before and will stay again, it’s a great hotel.

The hotel promotional photos are magnificent, the list of "awards" sound amazing, the reviews using words like "it's a knockout...eye popping interiors...once an old tired hotel transformed into a destination for the design savvy...a little bit Hamptons, a little bit Riviera, and a whole lot, I'm a 1960s Hollywood movie star hanging around the damn pool waiting for my agent" - looks like it says it all. Well - the reality is much less glamorous. At the price (around $3500 for a 2 night minimum stay Celebration Package) it would almost be better value to fly to Hollywood and find a real 1960s California movie star pool. The only movie star in this story is the one who wrote the fantasy script. The price alone screams luxury, exclusivity and the so-called "design savvy" elements turn up to be a poor excuse for a quaint Hamptons style mixed with what is proudly termed as mismatched art - all sparsely placed on a timber look vinyl planking floor - no rugs, of course. The furniture included a vintage style desk, with no desk chair, one small pastel coloured sitting chair, a chest of drawers, some lovely cushions and one small suitcase rack. Meaning nowhere to sit if you want to use the desk and nowhere to sit if you wanted in room dining. Space on luggage rack only for one small suitcase between 2 people - no real attention to luxury. I think the so advertised award winning interior decorator was only thinking about their own vision and not the comfort and experience of the actual hotel guests. And all power points were close to the floor (for example, under the desk) which is odd for a recently renovated hotel. PowerPoints should always be handy for charging devices. The only thing luxurious about this room was the standard of the bed which I must say was very comfortable. The restaurant was also great and all of the staff were extremely wonderful and could not do enough for you and made all feel very welcome. The bathroom was fine - white tiled walls, with blue and white floor tiles. That is where the luxury ends … from my point of view the room was very boring, had no soul and I just did not get the high end vibe. Perhaps it was because the accommodation is just so expensive and at this price, one feels forced to believe the hype or walk away feeling silly enough to have booked and paid, at all. We were on the top or third floor which should theoretically have the best view (of the trees with the ocean peeping through and looking down directly over the pool area). The balcony was nice - and due to looking directly over the pool - not very private, at all. The hotel is basically in the suburbs of Cabarita and in the middle of nowhere, close to the beach. There is not much around and, quite frankly, unless you are a couple wanting to escape in a low key hideaway spot - it is a bit boring. The restaurant was fantastic but the rooms were very disappointing. The included cocktails were fabulous. Of course, Cabarita beach is very nice - but at $3500 for a 2 night MINIMUN stay - it just feels like a bad joke in a bad movie. I will admit that the breakfast and dinner in the Paper Daisy restaurant was exceptional. But still, the room was such a big let down - it was an awful lot to pay for a nice dinner. The term luxury does hold a certain standard and at the end of the day, this hotel is not luxurious and is just a dressed up motel. Definitely, not worth the nightly accommodation rate. The owners of Halcyon House deserve a lot of kudos for their ability to market this property to such a dizzy height. I do not make many mistakes when I travel - but this one is going to be high on my party joke list! Either that or I will cry for being so stupid!

The disappointment and lack of accountability from the hotel had earnt this lowest review. If 0 was allowed, I would definitely put down to 0. Here is the story for the viewer to decide. As I didn’t want my partner to know about this surprise, I drove 2 hours from Brisbane to the hotel on the 3rd Feb 2020 to book 2 nights, 3 days stay to celebrate our engagement from the 23rd to 25th March 2020. The payment was made in full for an Ocean Superior, $850 per night, to a total of $1700 for 2 nights. It was a split payment of a $1300 Gift voucher + an additional $400 upfront payment in full on the 3rd Feb 2020. Soon after a confirmation email was sent to my email confirming full payment of the $1700 deposit and confirmation of our room. Due to lockdown, which kicked in on the same day as our engagement on the 23rd March 2020, with the borders closed, and our journey would mean us crossing the border from QLD to NSW, I immediately called the hotel to rebook for another time. However, it was turned down due to cancellation or rebooking would need to be arranged 30 days in advance and all credits are non-refundable. After a lengthy negotiation with Halcyon House, to their only credit in this review, and after much deliberation on Halcyon Houses' end, they agreed to move reservations until border restrictions are lifted. This bringing to the current day, as we are now lessening restrictions and borders are once again opening, on the 20th Feb 2022, I called to make a reservation, preferably sooner, and requested the soonest available dates - a team member at Halcyon House confirmed that they in-fact, one last room available for the upcoming weekend, 25th to 27th Feb 2022. Happy with these dates, I agreed for the room to be put on hold overnight, as they needed someone from "Reservations" to contact me and confirm my details. It was within this phone call, I was informed the price had gone up from $850 per night to $1400 per night. Although this was not expected, I was compassionate with these circumstances as I knew the effects COVID had on smaller businesses. However, after providing my previous confirmation reference number, Halcyon House, unfortunately, could not hold the same courtesy for me, as a consumer. Halycon House claims they could not find the reservation, alas I had sent my confirmation for my reservation. After again much deliberation on Halcyon's end, they managed to track down the reservation with the original booking date. However, they claimed I would still need to provide the voucher number again (a voucher that was taken off me when I originally presented it in person, when booking). Sheree, the reservation specialist explained she has no record of the voucher despite me holding the email confirming the reservation from 2 years ago with a $1700 payment made in full payment, a confirmation email sent by Sheree, herself. I sent this confirmation email record were to Sharee as payment evidence in black and white “Deposited taken $1700”. Sharee still was expecting me to provide my voucher number. I kindly suggested they may have taken this off me after it was redeemed on the 3rd of Feb 2020. Which has put me in the position of having neither voucher nor voucher number. Sheree suggested contacting the original person who bought the voucher to track down the reference number. I explained I no longer work with my previous employer, but I can try. Again, Sheree offered to hold the room for the weekend for the pre-COVID price of $850 per night, but a voucher number would still be required. On the 23rd Feb 2022, Sheree called wanting to confirm if I found the voucher, I explained I had attached all payment evidence that I sent overnight. However, Sheree said she did not have a record of the voucher number and she will try to look harder, and I will need to look for it. Again, I explained they may have taken this off me when I redeemed which is probably why I don’t have the physical voucher. Why do I need to chase something that was from 2 years ago, not able to honor something I paid for. At this point, Sheree said “ I did not say we can not offer you, but I need the voucher” I then proceed to use retail as an example. Where a customer purchased a product online and paid in full, but was unable to pick up the product on time. A confirmation of payment made in full was released and ready to pick up was issued. But now the customers somehow need to prove the payment method with an invoice that was paid in full with a confirmation letter. At this point, Sheree decided to offer a refund of $400 unless I can present a voucher number. In addition, she also repeatedly ask if I wanted to cancel the room that was put on hold. As if she wanted me to voluntarily cancel rather Halcyon House cancel on me. Again, very disappointed and would not recommend this hotel with the lack of accountability demonstrated by the reservation specialist. Not only this was a late surprise for my fiance from 2 years ago. The PREMIUM price of $850 pre-COVID or $1400 current price doesn't justify the customer service you are paying for. As if they purposely don't want to honor the $850 and make it difficult for me to give up and make $2800 for 2 nights rather than my $1700.

Unfortunately when you are paying for this luxury stay you expect a certain level of quality, finishes and presentation and sadly the building and rooms were a dressed up motel, definitely not worth the nightly rate. The pool lounges are stained and old, the pool timber edge is rotting and the cement pool surround as well as the unsightly plastic used under the pool beds looked cheap. In the rooms they looked tired and our bedding had stains as well the the curtains. Details like this should not be over looked. The service however was brilliant and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful, the food was delicious and was definitely the highlight of our stay.

My husband and I stayed at Halcyon House for 3 nights in March in an ocean superior room. We had high expectations for our stay and had been wanting to visit for a long time. On first impressions the facilities are intimate and beautifully designed. It was easy to get a park and to access our room. The staff were a true delight and were consistently friendly, efficient and unpretentious. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt very welcome. Our room was beautiful and the attention to detail was exceptional. We appreciated the small touches such as welcome chocolates, a canvas bag for the beach (to take home) and the lovely candle as a farewell gift. The included mini bar was also a huge hit with my husband! The bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept on and evenings were tranquil and quiet. Our visits to Paper Daisy became the highlight of each day and the food was excellent. We also enjoyed trying the cocktail menu (seriously delicious!) and our waiter Fletcher knowledgeable and funny. During our stay we visited Halcyon Spa and enjoyed a very relaxing morning. The decor and facilities were beautiful, and again the staff were warm and helpful. Overall we were so impressed and Halcyon House exceeded our high expectations. It was a truly relaxing experience and we can’t wait to visit again.

I was given a gift voucher for Halcyon House and am so happy I was! The location is fabulous - a small seaside village with a fabulous beach. Rooms are lovely, we stayed on the ground floor deliberately so we would have access from our rooms to the pool and beach, and it was lovely. Ground floor rooms have a wall rather than a fence-type balustrade, so they are quite private. the beach is across a lawn and down a short path - right on your doorstep. We ended up not going into the pool, but were on the beach a few times over our two day stay. The room was turned down while we were at dinner and tidied up while we were at breakfast, which was a nice touch. No bath in our room, but the shower was amazing - very powerful. I liked the Evo products as well and will be ordering some of their body lotion as I came home with very soft skin! We also ate at the restaurant and it was fantastic - ignore any poor reviews you find. The food is subtle and elegant, menu was different both nights (acknowledging we might have been lucky there) and we enjoyed everything we ate. We found the staff to be very friendly without being over-bearing, and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Overall, Halcyon House has a luxurious but relaxed, beachy vibe. We can't wait to go back again!

We had an extremely disappointing experience with Halcyon House and would not recommend this hotel to anyone. After confirming with reception that should any border restriction be imposed (due to COVID) we could re-schedule the booking, my partner and i booked a 2-night stay. This communication was in writing. A few weeks out from our booking, borders between NSW and QLD closed, preventing travel. As a result, we contacted the hotel to see if our booking could be rescheduled given our inability to travel. Despite the written communication prior, the hotel would not honour this. The customer service we received was beyond disgusting. This service does not reflect the luxury boutique prices you pay. I would highly suggest looking elsewhere.

We stayed on the top floor the rooms are clean and eclectically fitted out. The hotels restaurant is great we particularly liked the breakfast and lunch menu. The beach thats right out the front of the hotel is long and quiet, great surf beach. The hotels pool was pretty busy and small but the beach makes up for it. The hotels wine list used to be better but still ok.

You can feel the relaxed atmosphere of this motel conversion the second you walk in. Luxurious yet understated. Service is always friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is excellent too. The dinner menu is a choice of 4 meals for 4 courses and doesn’t change much from night to night so if you’re there for a few nights it gets a touch repetitive, but all dishes are delicious. The rooms are not huge but definitely spacious enough, with very high ceilings which gives them a good feel. One night we had to stay in the disabled room which I’d recommend avoiding but apart from that I really can’t fault this place. Try a sunset on the headland too, they’ll provide you with a blanket and esky if you need too. Also take a bike and ride down to Kingscliff which is a relaxing 45m ride each way and mostly flat.
