We stayed here for 1 night as a stopover before our international flight home. We had just spent two weeks touring Costa Rica. The hotel was nice, with a great ambiance. However, it was spoilt by a dreadful restaurant. We ate the worst meal we had in our time in country. To add further insult, it was also the most expensive and the smallest portion. The Service was slow, 45 minutes after ordering until out food arrived. When it did, it was very disappointing. I had a Tuna steak and salad. It comprised a sliver of Tuna and a desert-spoon full of shredded cabbage. That’s it - for $34. My wife had Vegetable Rondon which was like dirty dishwater with 4 cheese balls in it. Disgusting. Then we had sales tax and service charge. I complained about the Rondon, but was given a free cup of coffee by way of a response. This is not a cheap hotel, and it claims to have an excellent restaurant. It doesn’t. It also does not have any idea about customer service. I’m glad we hadn’t booked longer here - everywhere else we stayed in Costa Rica was sooo much nicer. If you’re read this, I would recommend you stay somewhere else.

Dear Fearless, thank you for your review- I am truly very sorry we did not meet your expectations and that your experience was so unpleasant in the restaurant. I will certainly sit down with the whole restaurant staff to work on this issue and to try to improve our service and find out why the dishes you received were such a disappointment. Just a note: the sales tax and gratuity are mandatory taxes in all Costa Rican restaurants, and we are required to charge this. On your next trip to Costa Rica, I sincerely hope you will try our restaurant again, as we are continually trying to improve and bring wonderful experiences to our clients.

After a long flight from London via Paris we arrived in San Jose at around 19.00hrs, we where promptly picked up and whisked off the Finca Rosa, about 30-40 mins away. We where greeted by the wonderful staff at check-in and taken too our room, well, what a loverly room, very large balcony, we could see the lights of the capital in the distance. We had booked in for 2 nights as our starting point to our first trip to Costa Rica. The room was very spacious and very clean, great bed as well. As you would expect the coffee in the room was amazing, actually the best I tasted on our 2 week trip (just wish I had purchased some to take home, my biggest mistake). The bar and restaurant where really good, and very well priced. All I can say is what a great place to stay, when I go back to CR I will make this my first point of call once again. Finca Rosa team, keep up the great work, a fantastic resort, thanks for looking after us so well.

Dear I_J, thank you so much for writing and sharing your experience with us. It really is always so wonderful to read our guests' reviews, and our staff always is delighted to read them as well. I am glad you liked our award-winning coffee-in October we won the World Coffee Challenge award for best organic coffee in the world, so we are delighted and our staff who do almost all the work are hyper proud as well. If you want to buy some via ecommerce, our representatives in the USA are Farm Cup Coffee and in Canada, Ingredients Natural. Again, we really appreciate you taking time to share your observations, and we all hope you will be back soon to see some of the upgrades we are making and go home with an armful of our organic coffee.

I would highly recommend this hotel, here’s why: We came straight here from the hotel, to settle ourselves into Costa Rica as soon as possible without a long drive after a long journey. We stayed in Pino, which had a very generous balcony in addition to a little galley area, large bathroom and large bedroom. I think Finca Rosa Blanca is an ideal stay for a couple in a secluded, welcoming spot with polite, engaging and passionate staff. We stayed for three nights, and I think that is about the maximum you may want to stay, if I’m honest (because there’s just so much to see in the rest of Costa Rica!) Another hotel we stayed at conducted a short tour of the grounds, which I think FRB could offer, because there is a lot to see just within the hotel itself. Positives Proximity to airport Size of room (villa) and balcony Location is quiet, with lovely views Very relaxed, tranquil and welcoming atmosphere Grounds are well tended and beautiful Excellent communication from reception staff prior to arrival Coffee farm tour is brilliant and delivered by passionate and informed guide - highly recommended for anyone with any interest at all in coffee Swimming pool area is perfect for relaxing (but a small pool, so it’s mainly for chilling out and taking a cooling dip rather than a proper swim) Staff are genuine, informed, seemingly passionate and welcoming Breakfast menu is good. Hue is al cafetaleria recommended. (Please excuse the spelling!) Dining area has a nice view and is such a great spot to take start your day Free unlimited ground coffee, straight from Finca Rosa Blanca, and a French press in the rooms is excellent - wish everywhere in Costa Rica did something similar! Negatives Limited dinner menu (what they have is nice, but you’d get bored after a few days) Restaurant is over-priced, if I’m honest (prices you’d pay in a European city centre restaurant is too much in my opinion) Didn’t bother us, but some people may be put off by the occasional plane disturbing the peace and quiet. Overall: Thank you for a wonderful stay and an amazing start to our holiday, A & A

Dear Antony, thank you for your kind comments and the very detailed review. Our staff, as you know, is all local - wonderful people from our surrounding communities, and take great pride in their towns, their province and of course our coffee farm and inn. Our guides, Paolo and Ulises, are also avid bird watchers and coffee experts who look forward, every day, to sharing our forested coffee farm, and telling its story as a conservation project and an award-winning quality product. The menu is designed as old Costa Rican recipes using locally grown foods (mostly our farms) using fresh and seasonal fare and updated with innovative and deliciously healthy versions of our local dishes. We have many dishes available and vegetarian dishes as well, which all show off the wonderfully healthy and savory Costa Rican traditional dishes. The cost of many ingredients that bring the high-quality and authentic dishes can be expensive, and our prices only reflect the quality and experience the restaurant offers. I must admit, we are a bit confused about your remark about the pool being "small". It is 23 meters long (70') and 8 meters ( 25 ') wide, which is perfect for swimming laps- a pool much bigger than most small hotels and lodges anywhere in the country. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences and we are so glad you had such a delightful time with us!

Amazing place with a very romantic atmosphere. The best cappuccino I’ve ever had was prepared here by Carlos, a magician barista! He used a mild blend of organic coffee grown at the property and finished with a touch of art. Check the picture.

Dear Ana Rita P; what a wonderful review to read today! Thanks so much for mentioning our coffee bar in our restaurant, El Tigre Vestido, and of course, our barista, Carlos, who loves to create dazzling and delicious coffee drinks with our award-winning, organic, shade grown coffee. We appreciate your taking time to share this experience- it is certainly an important part of a stay at our Inn and when dining in our restaurant, we love to surprise our guests with creations using our coffee. We hope to see you again soon to show you other surprises, activities and more coffee culture.

We arrived after a long flight for an overnight stay. This little hotel is ideal to start or end your trip to Costa Rica . The rooms are quite quirky but comfortable, the grounds of the hotel are pretty and well kept. Dinner was ok but slow service, breakfast was average. Staff were great!

Dear Beckybsketi, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences with us. I know how difficult and exhausting it is to fly for 11 or 12 hours from the UK and then have to find your destination. Being only 20 minutes from the international airport nestled in the coffee highlands (we really don't hear or see the airplanes) is one of the best surprises of Finca Rosa Blanca. We try to make the whole experience of getting here and checking in a delight, and of course, the beautiful tropical coffee farm and views to the central valley below are a great remedy for the plane exhaustion. We like the word quirky, as we are definitely a place which glows with design, art and unusual murals, plants and color-this is our tribute to our Costa Rican love for nature and beauty. As per the service, we are a country that is relaxed and move gently and, like the rest of the country, we believe in giving our guests a high quality but non-stressful experience. Again, we appreciate your sharing your experiences with us!

The hotel is located in a coffee on a mountainside overlooking the capital city. It has worked hard to achieve and maintain ecologically sustainable practices. We had hoped to spend at least an afternoon and evening at Finca Rosa Blanca before heading out the next morning. The hotel and its grounds seemed to an interesting place to explore. Unfortunately our flight was delayed and we arrived well into the evening. There was no issue having a late dinner even though we had arrived much later than expected. Staff was very accommodating. Check-in was efficient. We were shown to our room, which was very spacious. It included a patio with the review of the city lights below; it would have been quite the view during the day. Dinner was tasty, our server friendly and prompt. The got to explore the buildings a little bit, the common area was very inviting with multiple colorful murals of plants and birds and other wildlife. There was a fireplace. Many armchairs and couches made for plentiful seating. It was quiet and the bed comfortable. We slept well and were rested for our early morning departure; unfortunately we had to leave before breakfast was served but food boxes had been prepared for us. I would definitely stay at Finca Rosa Blance again but make sure to stay at least 2 nights to better appreciate it.

Dear ImmerWandern, thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments with us and for the nice review of our small inn. It is indeed unfortunate you didn't have time to see the grounds more, and particularly, to go on the coffee tour, which is beautiful, interesting and at the end, you actually would have been able to "cup" the coffee (taste and identify) with our coffee guide. We are in the middle of a large scale "update" of the inn, and most of the public areas are now renewed, so I am glad you got to see them and enjoy the colorful fabrics, rugs and murals that fill the hotel. I hope next time, you will have more time to enjoy our myriad activities, such as the coffee tour, hiking in the cloud forest, volcano visits, and one of our other favorites, the cultural tour where you end up at the wonderful old central market which still operates as it did a hundred years ago! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experiences with us!

We lands in Dan Jose late afternoon and we’re driven the 30 mins here which was really convenient. Had a lovely welcome and were shown to our beautiful room - they are all arty and individual. No air con but despite early reservations the window nets did their job. It’s a tiny hotel and very romantic - the bar and restaurant are lovely (they look a bit basic on their website but aren’t). It’s got a tiny pool area but is super pretty. Breakfast was the highlight - avocado and bacon on toast!!! Yummy! Evening food was good but huge portions- and some of their plating made it hard to eat (I had fish stew which was delicious but I ended up wearing most of it because the bowl was deep!). We did the coffee tour which was fantastic and we learnt loads from it. People are delightful and we highly recommend for a two night stay.

Dear Catherine, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about our small inn. We always appreciate tips for our website, and it looks like we will have to get some better pictures of the restaurant, so it looks as beautiful as it really is, with its stunning views to the central valley and coffee farms below. Our chef, Olivier Zamora, is a true artist, he learned and evolved through working in some of the best restaurants here in Costa Rica, and came to us wanting to expand his ideas and recipes to show off the wonderful, healthy and delicious Costa Rican fare. Thanks again for taking the time to post your thoughts and impressions!

This was our first stop on our trip to Costa Rica. We spent a wonderful two nights here. It was so relaxing and from the moment we arrived we found all the staff really friendly and helpful. Our room (Piedra) was very quirky and lovely. It had everything you would need, including a jacuzzi bath, large patio with sun beds and the comfy bed was built onto a large rock protruding through the floor underneath (hence the name). It was lovely watching the humming birds feeding on the plants outside from the sitting room area. We took the included half day coffee tour, which was fabulous and educational. The restaurant was excellent for both breakfast and evening meals. Quality food nicely presented and the staff were great. I would highly recommend this hotel if you wish to stay somewhere close to San Jose, but in a peaceful and beautiful location. The coffee tour is a must.

Dear Bowie Knitter, thank you for such a lovely review, and we were all pleased to read how much you liked the room "La Piedra" ("The Rock" in English as you pointed out). We also were happy that the hummingbirds visited your balcony, which they do often. We do not believe in feeding animals or birds, but rather providing them a myriad plants and flowers that they are attracted to and love, and this has worked splendidly for us over the last 34 years. Our chef, Olivier Zamora is really dedicated to fresh foods, Costa Rican recipes updated and redesigned, and using all the organic greens, herbs and fruits we grow on our farm and in our large organically certified greenhouse. Again, thank you for writing about your time with us and we do hope you will be back soon!

Beautiful grounds and charming rooms. Enjoyed just walking around and taking it all in. Very clean room with a great balcony. Loved the pool, hot tub and short trails. We had a little trouble with communication prior to arrival which made me nervous. Despite calls and emails we were unable to arrange transportation from the airport. However, upon arrival we received nothing but fantastic service. Everyone we encountered was fantastic. We loved the coffee tour….and the coffee! Would definitely return for another stay without hesitation.

Dear 548matta, thanks for taking the time and energy to share your experience at our coffee farm and inn. It is always so great for all of us here to hear about your stay and also to share with everybody who works here (all from the surrounding communities). I am very sorry about the transportation glitches-normally we try to make sure this is flawless as it is the first moments of our guests' time with us- we will definitely look into this and work on making this perfect. As per the coffee tour, both Ulises and Paolo love their jobs, they are coffee experts and coffee lovers, but are drawn to the hundreds of bird species, the forested landscape and the idea of coffee as a beverage of the gods (LOL). Again, we truly appreciate your taking time to write about your stay!

Dear Andreawb, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us and for your ebullient remarks! Our cocktails are made from mostly organic juices, herbs and other delightful Costa Rican products we grow on our farm, and we love to invent new ones, based on what is in season and what we have that is really fresh. I hope you will come back and stay more time and experience some of our other activities, such as the coffee highlands cultural tour, in which we visit the famous mask makers that are in our community and then venture into the remarkable and traditional Heredia central market, which has been running for a century or more and probably hasn't changed much. Also, a tour to Poás volcano and end up at the La Paz waterfalls in the rainforest not far from our farm. Again, thanks so much for writing about your stay with us!
