Away with the Fairies needs some tender loving care.
While it has the famous bath overlooking a spectacular view, the rooms are so grubby and unloved. The beds havent been replaced in years so the mattresses springs dig into you every night. The managers talk to the staff in a re

Thank you so much for your review. Your stay was pretty much a comedy of errors, everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It opened our eyes to quite a few aspects of the business that need attention, I'm sorry you had to be the catalyst. We thought we had addressed these issues while you were here, as I personally spoke to you three or four times trying to remedy the situation but I understand that you needed to vent, and where better than Trip Advisor? We have taken it all on board and we will be making and have already made improvements in all of the area's you highlighted. Some of the issues were remedied instantly, such as the noise of the chainsaw, and won't be a problem again. The cottage you stayed in has had a huge spring clean the moment you left, so that is also no longer an issue either. I'm assuming the colonial management style is aimed at me, and to be honest I have been compared to Basil Fawlty over the years. There is generally a very relaxed atmosphere between myself and my staff, we're like a family giving hugs and love to each other most days. Some days, when there are unhappy guests who don't want to be placated then the easygoing Love needs to turn into action and Basil comes out. Once again, I'm very sorry that your stay wasn't up to the standard you expected of us, but thank you for opening our eyes to it and giving us the opportunity to improve. Lots of love and hugs Dan

Hogsback is already a uniquely themed area up in the foresty mountains of South Africa and Away with the Fairies is a perfect place to stay.

With a Lord of the Rings theme, you feel as though you've gone back in time. The main building is warm and comfy and the bar/restaurant a

This stay was truly magic. Being in the forest was a much needed step out from reality. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was satisfactory. I felt welcome the entire stay. Keep up the magical vibe you have created.

Can't really describe, whether poet storyteller or not, how beautiful that bluesky hiking day in Hogsback was, icing-cake sugar on the ridges, waterfalls full of melted slush, folks driving up from below who'd never done slush angels before, tripping over roots of 800-year-old ye

The staff at away with the fairies is really kind and the atmosphere is relaxed. The surroundings are beautiful and the bath is definitely an unique experience. The only disadvantage was that is was very cold and the wood that was given was still a bit wet so it was really hard t

Hi there I would just like to know if the camp site is pet friendly?
Hi Inge, I am afraid not. We have a big Boerboel who is pretty territorial, when I say pretty I mean she is very. Nothing is much less atmospheric than a dog fight. I'm really sorry. Yours Dan

Hello, I was wondering how to access the bath? Do we need to hike there? Also are there hikes that are more easy to moderate that our group can do? Thank you!
Good morning, thank you for your questions. The bath is practically next to our view point, which is right here on our front lawn. There are many moderate hikes and even a light walk to 39 Steps waterfall. Looking forward to welcoming your group to Hogsback. Fairy Regards, Miki

Thank you so much for responding to my previous question. Turns out I have four more! Can we rent mountain bikes from the hostel? Is the bath still operational and how can we go about arranging a soak with a view? Where are the bridal veil falls (I have only heard about them)? Is the Kat River dam wall in Seymour worth a visit? Thanks again :)
No problem at all. The bath with the incredible view is still going strong. You just need to let us know when you want to bath and we'll light the fire for you. We can organise mountain bike rental for you, also when you get here. Easy. Bridal Veil falls is the waterfall that we can hear from the backpackers. It is possible to walk to the top in about 15 minutes, or the bottom of the falls through the Auckland nature reserve, via The Big Tree and it takes about an hour. The Seymour Dam is nice bit not really worth the effort. The road to Seymour is all but undrivable, unless you are travelling by hovercraft. I hope this helps Dan.

Hello, I would just like to know if we can braai if we stay in the Hobbit cottage. I am staying there in November and braaiing is quite important to us! Thank you.
Hi there, Thanks so much for the enquiry. We have just completed a new braai area at our new viewpoint on the cliff edge. It has it's own waterfall and a staggering view of the indigenous forest and the 3 Hogsback Mountains. Not just any old braai area, that's for sure.
