We spent 3 nights at the Abbey Arms Hotel and they were comfortable and cosy. The room was clean and quiet. Breakfast was included in our tariff and offered a good selection of local food, including haggis and smoked salmon. New Abbey is a very quaint and pretty village and the hotel is one of the few places to stay.... More

stopped off in our camper in a beautiful place New Abby thought we would finish the night off with a drink in the local pub BIG mistake the landlord certainly knows how to treat his customers with foul and abusive language and smutty talk in front of children no wonder there weren't any local in the bar and the bar... Never have I been to a pub before where you are made to feel so unwelcome, we are not locals and went in on a Sunday night and first of all ordered a drink with a lemonade to be told there's none, saw a can on the shelf told no it's the last one, I then said can I have... More

What can I say about the Abbey Arms? Well nothing repeatable in polite society. When I arrived the place was locked up and I had to go to the nearby shop to ring up and gain access. When I entered, the place was stone cold, and downstairs smelt of stale food. The room was clean, but that's all you can... More

Extensive choice of menu, for example at least four different types of soup as well as other starters and many main courses on the main menu and specials list. Something for everyone. The meal was served in the dining room adjacent to the main bar. We enjoyed our meals. The price was very reasonable.

After travelling home from a few days in Aberdeen, we thought we would break our journey up and stay in Dumfries. We called into the Abbey Arms hotel at 5pm on the off chance they would have a room for us for the night. This was also a trip down memory lane as we stayed here 22 years ago. The... More

Having climbed criffel one evening on a cold damp night, a group of 6 of us went here for a few pints before getting bus back to town. We asked for the fire to be put on but were told no as we might be the only customers in that night (a Friday). Pints were horrible so we left and... More

Visited Sweetheart Abbey on a blustery day and were walking through the village to find somewhere to eat. Wood smoke was billowing from the chimney of the Abbey Arms inviting us in. The welcome at the Inn for the whole family was fantastic. The barmaid with the fascinating Scottish/Latvian accent was a real natural. Great food by the open log... More

I visited this hotel for dinner with my elderly mother. The lovely (Latvian?) lady directed us to the warmest place to sit and it was very pleasant. We both had a lamb shank served in a dark mint gravy which may have olive oil in. This was all perfect. We definitely enjoyed our visit to this hotel.

Having walked up Knockendoch and The Criffel we were in need of a good meal so we were delighted to find this charming hotel. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. Our meals were tasty and generous portions. The ginger sticky toffee pudding was delicious and my husband had a huge portion of ice cream. The village of New Abbey... More
