Enjoy a wonderful stay in a special part of the Natural Park Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche at Las Posadas in Alájar providing low impact, environmentally friendly accommodation within a natural park along with invaluable help and advice from your hosts Lucy and Ángel. At La Posada de San Marcos the only sound you will hear is the breeze in the cork oak trees, the babbling of the stream, birdsong and crickets. The view towards the oak clad hill behind us or towards the village and the Peña beyond provide the perfect backdrop from your room terrace or the gardens. The perfect opportunity to experience an environmentally friendly, energy efficient hotel with a superior level of accommodation and disabled access. Relax in our garden and if it gets too warm plunge into our 12 metre pool to cool off or take some exercise.Or alternatively you can stay at our sister hotel La Posada de Alájar, a renovated inn dating from the 18th Century where you are surrounded by the history of its walls and chestnut beamed ceilings. Centrally located by the village square with its restaurants, bars and shops everything is close to hand. Cosy rooms, cheerfully decorated, ensure an enjoyable and comfortable holiday.

We love walking and selected La Posada as a base for exploring the region, and we're so glad we did. Lucy and Angel are perfect hosts and made us, and the other guests, feel very welcome. The rooms are clean and airy, and all have access to a terrace or balcony. We had dinner there on four nights, and Lucy's cooking is amazing - generous portions of local dishes, and wonderful organic red wine to wash it all down with. We had a guided walk with Angel which was very interesting - he is a mine of information about the area, flora and fauna, and made us appreciate our surroundings all the more. We also had the jamon and sherry tasting with him, and if you want to try some of the best jamon iberico I have ever tasted, this is the place to do it. It really does melt in your mouth. Lucy and Angel also provided us with details of all the local walks, most of which can be done from La Posada, as well as wonderful packed lunches - the tortilla and empanadas were out of this world! They have also done everything they can to minimise the impact of La Posada on the environment, and if more hotels did half as much as they do, the world would be a better place. We were genuinely sorry to leave, and have no hesitation in recommending La Posada very highly to anyone wanted to spend time in Alajar. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Lucy and Angel.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at La Posada de San Marcos and can not recommend it highly enough. Lucy and Angel are such wonderful hosts and immediately made us feel welcome. Nothing is too much trouble, and they helped us make meal reservations and recommended local restaurants. Two nights, Lucy prepared dinner for us and the food was delicious. We also enjoyed Angel's tutorial on carving the local jamon. A perfect base from which to explore the area.

Very comfortable accommodation, outstanding food, a pool which stays open (and clean!) all year, and hosts who go out of their way to make sure you don't miss out on the pleasures of staying in this lovely area.

I have been fortunate enough to stay here many times and could not wait to return. Lucy and Ángel are so warm and welcoming it is more like staying with friends than in a hotel. Ángel's guided walk was full of really interesting details about the area and I got to see some places I might not have found for myself. if you like getting out into unspoilt countryside, and eating good food this is the ideal village to stay.

We stayed at the Posada San Marcos for 4 nights in September/October 2021 to explore the Sierra and do some walking. We travelled independently and booked directly by emailing the Posada. We had a lot of contact with Lucy & Angel before our stay, via their monthly newsletters and with directions and other useful information via email which we found reassuring. Their website is also packed with useful information. Lucy and Angel are very welcoming and the Posada provided a comfortable and enjoyable short break. We did several walks around the village and to Linares and around Almonaster, all recommended by Lucy. We enjoyed the buffet breakfasts and three course evening meals cooked by Lucy and the pre-bookable packed lunches are great for those longer walks. My favourite part of the holiday was the time spent by the pool which was a little peace of heaven, surrounded by nature. We found the honesty bar to be an excellent idea with everything you need from a cup of tea to great organic wine. I would thoroughly recommend Posada San Marcos for your stay in Alajar.

The other reviews say it all. This is a brilliant place to stay in rural Andalucia. Owners Angel and Lucy do an excellent job in making their visitors feel welcome and at home. Their enthusiasm for the area and all it has to offer is infectious and they couldn’t be more helpful in ensuring you make the most of your stay. If you visit, do join Angel’s guided walk, take part in the jamon tasting and sample Lucy’s cooking. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients are one of the fundamental principles here. Breakfast toast spread with olive oil instead of butter, honey and freshly cracked walnuts was a revelation. Even the nutcrackers work better than those at home! Our room was simple, spacious, comfortable and clean, with doors opening onto a terrace overlooking the garden, pool and the wooded hills beyond. We stayed here as part of an Inntravel walking holiday, and were able to do all our walks from the front door of the Posada, with our hire car sitting unused throughout. The local footpaths were shaded by olive trees and cork oaks, bordered by wildflowers and scented by orange blossom, and the only sounds came from the birds and the occasional chime of a goat bell. We barely saw a soul while we were out walking. La Posada de San Marcos delivered all ingredients for our perfect holiday. Many thanks to Lucy and Angel who have created a very special place to stay.

There is little I can add to the previous reviews of the posada, just agree with everything that has been said. We spent 6 nights here enjoying good local food, Lucy and Angel's exceptional hospitality. We were especially grateful for advice on walks that we could manage and all the local knowledge. Nothing was too much trouble for this very hospitable couple.

We recently traveled to Alajar, Spain for a walking holiday and stayed in a charming hotel owned by, the equally charming, Angel and Lucy. Angel gave all the residents a master class on how to carve 'Jamón ibérico', this practical demonstration was accompanied/paired with local Sherry's, followed by a sumptuous NYs eve supper. This lovely village nestled in the Andalucia Mountains boasts stunning views, fabulous locally produced food and wine. The view from the bell gable at the 'Reina de los Ángeles chapel' is especially worthwhile. In summary... Fantastic walking, great weather (very lucky), perfect hosts - a truly memorable experience.

This was a last minute booking through Inntravel and we chose the Posada San Marcos because the flights worked well and Inntravel's package offered varied lowish-level walks from the door, three evening meals in house, together with a guided walk with Angel and a visit to the secadero. These were all very worthwhile and I'd recommend the Inntravel package for these extras. So what makes it 5 stars? Well 3 main things: (1) Lucy and Angel - an Anglo-Spanish couple - provide the perfect combination of understanding what Brits expect/understand and local knowledge - as well as being very happy to explain everything about the local area, customs, language (i.e. rural Andalucian Spanish as opposed to Sevillian Spanish!) etc. They make you feel almost part of the family. They'll also book restaurants for you or advise on walks and sights. In addition, Lucy helpfully juggled bookings so we didn't have to change rooms mid week; (2) the clean, comfortable (but not fancy) accommodation with honesty bar (always a good sign) and that wonderful breakfast - local, rustic, homemade and amazing (but think varieties of olive oil, local honey and pate, not bacon and eggs or standard 'international' fare); and (3) the guided walk and secadero visit - excellent bonuses - providing so much information about Alajar area and everything about the prized Iberian pigs. As well as seeing and feeding the pigs (with acorns we gathered) we accompanied Angel when he bought a leg of jamon for Christmas - costing Euros 350! By the way, pig features in virtually every menu - if you don't speak Spanish, your phrase book won't be much help - just ask if it's 'carne' and if it is, it will probably be pig! And wonderfully juicy tender pig it is too - not dry white meat like you typically find in Britain! Other pluses were Lucy's cooking - we loved the chickpea and spinach casserole but can't quite accept that Alajar justifies serving fish dishes because it's 'near the sea', when it's 2 1/2 hours drive to the coast, so cod mornay was less interesting. We were also very pleased with Inntravel's arrangements (walking notes, restaurant suggestions, driving notes etc) and their willingness to change those notes when we made suggestions afterwards. It was too late in the season to use the pool, but the gardens at this 6 room hotel are attractive for relaxing and the hotel prides itself (justifiably) on being ecologically sound - Angel will happily tell you all about it! It is within walking distance of a good selection of bars and restaurants in the village of Alajar - so no need to drive or call a taxi in the evening - and eating out is inexpensive. Any downsides? The WiFi cuts out occasionally, but it's pretty good. I'd have liked fly screens on the windows as we did have one (yes just one) mosquito visit us. The rooms are solid, but sound transfers via/ under the doors and there are no carpets (because it's hot in summer), so if your neighbour comes in late you may hear them clattering in the corridor. However, it's a place that appeals to walkers (from strollers to trekkers) not party animals, so it's not a big risk! Go there and enjoy - we did!

We came as a prelude to a fortnight in Portugal and found Alajar an easy drive from Faro airport. Lucy and Angel are the perfect hosts of a tiny hotel in a tiny village. We had booked their Iberian Ham experience which meant we spent a lot of time with one or other of our friendly hosts as they gave us a fascinating (and tasty) introduced to the world's finest ham and the people (and pigs) who make it. The room was simple but clean and comfortable with an outdoor balcony. I enjoyed the pool though it was a little cool in late September. Lucy's dinners were memorable, as was the Andalucian breakfast. We admired their commitment to local products and sustainabilty. I think we shall return - maybe next time for a little gentle walking among the beautiful hills.
