There can be no doubt that the design and architecture of this beautiful resort are sublime. From the moment we started our descent we could see the full panarama of the beautiful wooden decks and overwater bungalows. In my opinion some of the Maldives can look very sterile and crowded with accommodation tightly packed but Soneva is the complete opposite. The beautiful decks curve and sway like the sea they stand over and the bungalows are kept far apart from one another. Serious design and thought has gone in to this architecture and it shows. Off all the resorts we visited in the Maldives Soneva Jani was by far this most photogenic. No surprising this resort is an Instagram favourite but the magic does not stop with the design of the facilities. The staff at Soneva are amazing and they really go out of the way to make your stay seamless and most importantly relaxing. After all that's they key to any great resort stay. At the centre of the beautiful resort is the Gathering. A three storey beach mansion with beautiful bars and cosy nooks for dining over the sea. The Gathering at sunset and evening is pure magic as are the decks at nighttime. The lighting is so beautiful that going for a nighttime walk is a must. The overwater villas are the best inn the Maldives. Absolutely no doubt about that and we have seen many of the other top properties. We can't wait to come back and thank you Mama San ( our bare foot butler ) for looking after us so well. Greg Reynolds - American Express Travel

Dear GodAtum, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us. We regret to hear that your recent stay with us was a disappointing experience. We are very sorry that you were disturbed by a drone that was filming, although they had strict instructions to avoid any of our guests. As for your comments with regards to bad food and staff, I would like to understand more about this and will contact you separately. We would very much like to see you again and hopefully look forward to welcoming you back. Best Wishes, Antony Paton

We stayed with our two children end of March for nearly two weeks. Simply put, this is the best resort that we have stayed at, to date, compared to other 5 star properties around the globe! Soneva Jani is an exceptionally special resort, on a simply stunning island. The level of service across every inch of the island superb and the warmth of the staff and the layout of the resort, creates a wonderful feeling when you are there. We stayed in Chapter 1 (the original end of the resort) in Villa 10 which is sunset facing. Chapter 2 is newer and at the other end of the island nearer to beaches and lush foliage. Our One Bed Villa was everything the photos promise... rustic chic, beautifully executed, incredibly spacious with two separate areas for our two children to sleep in (a small study and child sleeping den off main bedroom). The features within the villa make the most of the turquoise shallow lagoon that the villa sits over. Probably the most impactful things that made this holiday so successful were: 1) an amazing barefoot butler, who was so responsive, so patient with our kids and his knowledge of this impressively sustainable island so helpful (Shimmi) 2) the staff at the kids club and the attention they gave my children with personalised activities (Shaze made my kids' holiday!) 3) the choice of restaurants and really high standard of food in each of them and the attentive staff (Wisham & Navi) 4) the hugely impressive sustainability programme that underpins the entire resort (as per it's sister resort Soneva Fushi) it's eco-friendly practices and positive impact on the planet! 5) The Marine Biologists, particularly Meral, who has totally inspired our youngest child to follow in her shoes and the kindness she showed him x Top tips for any potential travellers: 1) if your budget stretches book Chapter 2 villas. The pool and sunbathing areas have been swapped around, so more shade to sit under. The lounge area in the villa is air conditioned, whereby in Chap1 it is the only area that isn't, so we couldn't use it as too hot! The location in our opinion is no better than Chapter 1 villas however. 2) If the slide (from the top floor veranda of the villa down into the lagoon) is what sold the resort to you (and your kids!), make sure you get a tonne of bath mats via the butler and lay down across the glass bottomed lounge floor every day. My youngest slipped badly with wet feet on glass floor, only 1.5 hours after arriving!)... Doctor in the resort was efficient and luckily he hadn't broken anything! other reviews mention it as a design issue... 3) End March was extremely hot and humid - it was 29 degrees with 85% humidity, so feel like temp was about 39 degrees! but that of course could change year on year. The heat stopped us cycling across the island to spend time on the beaches (between Chap1 &2) as no cover. This is a very much a villa centric holiday. 4) Starstruck experience: dining under stars with the lovely Marvin and his huge telescope (!) Choose your evening carefully for this. We chose a clear night thanks to our Butler, but the planets chose not to visit us or the moon ! leaving us slightly underwhelmed. 5) The main restaurant in The Gathering for the most amazing breakfast buffet in dedicated chilled rooms. Also ice cream and chocolate rooms (open all day). 6) They are currently building what will be such an impressively designed new kids club , nestled into the lush surroundings.. 7) Bear in mind that Chapter 2 villas are based on Soneva Unlimited package (all inclusive) but the cost of that proposition would have cost us more than double, compared to a Chapter 1 villa. Other reviews recommend them over Chapter 1, but don't mention that! Yes they are newer and there are a few design features that have been improved compared to Chapter1, but the price reflects that. 8) All toiletries are in refillable ceramic bottles by every sink and shower, lovely quality and you can even chose your preferred fragance from a menu. There are no plastics in the rooms, so don't plan on leaving all your empties when you leave! Summary: We are planning a visit back to this extremely special resort, with its unquestionably high standards, even for the most discerning of traveller. May we thank all the staff and the GM for such a memorable trip.

We had the pleasure of staying at this sustainable luxury resort and we had the most wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived until we left, we felt like home. The first thing you're asked to do is to take your shoes off (Their ‘No News, No Shoes’ philosophy is all about disconnecting from the stresses of daily life). We stayed at Chapter II and our overwater villa was unbelievable. We were at Soneva Jani during Easter and we got to enjoy a culinary journey where we tried different type of cuisines while having some drinks in different stations until we finally hit the beach where the main courses were being served. We truly had a five star experience at the first barefoot luxury resort of the Maldives. We can't wait go go back!

The food, villas, service and overall attention to detail is out of this world. Cannot recommend Soneva Jani enough! The oversized villas and waterslide means that you always have something to do even if just relaxing on the deck or swimming in your private pool.

A review for Soneva Jani is very difficult to write. Expectations for this place are exceptionally high, where you are wanting everything to run perfectly due to the price you are paying. We had been talking about and planning our trip to Soneva Jani for months and were planning to have our wedding celebration here. We had been travelling for quite some time, including 6 weeks in the Maldives, and we chose Soneva Jani to be the last leg of our trip. We had planned to stay for 3-4 days; however, ended up extending and stayed 7 nights. We were picked up in a Telsa and whisked away to the Soneva Lounge to fill out some forms and promptly embarked on a sea plane. Upon arrival, we were taken straight to our villa. The welcoming was nothing special at all. It may be different during Covid; however, the other places that we had stayed in the Maldives had offered a warmer welcoming. We opted for the Chapter 2 Water Reserve with slide - Soneva Unlimited. The villa - absolutely wonderful, immaculately clean, exceptionally well laid out. It really did exceed all of our expectations. The beds are comfortable and the retractable roof is an added bonus. Make sure you request a sunset villa. The resort - this place is unique and beautiful, the sand is so white, the waters are so blue, and the whole place is well-maintained. The spa - I have had many massages in my life but these were some of the best…highly recommended! The gym - this was a bit of a disappointment. Although it offers beautiful views, the temperature was hot, which could not seem to be controlled, the equipment was not first class and some of it was broken. I believe that a Wellness Centre is being built, which will offer better facilities. The food and drinks - absolutely perfect: 10/10. Everything we ate was extremely high quality and there is a wide range of wines and cocktails on offer. We ate at the Crab Shack, which was delicious - just order one crab for two people, as they are huge! We also ate at 'So Starstruck' and the food was wonderful as well as the young astro-genius Marvin. Breakfasts were also fabulous where we ate at the Gathering as well as So Cold, where both offered a wide range of food. We had the private beach lunch on North Island as well as the private beach dinner, which were very memorable experiences. The staff - our barefoot butler Rahu went out of her way to accommodate our needs at all times of the day. She even went out snorkelling at night with a torch to help my husband find his bracelet he lost down the slide. We successfully found the bracelet! The room attendants were fabulous, and offered exceptional service. The restaurant staff were all wonderful and friendly. We did however have a couple of issues upon arrival. We were not sure whether to address these during our stay, but when we did, management were prompt in handling this. The management go out of their way to ensure that the guests are happy, and will try as hard as possible to attend to your requests - be mindful that you’re out on a private island so things cannot get there as quickly as normal. I needed some things for our wedding photos that I could not get these at the resort. My barefoot butler made sure she got these for me! However, the system did take us a little getting used to. Prior to arrival, we were sent details about our preferences, including which ‘Experiences’ we would like to do. Since we had only initially planned to stay for a few days, our schedule was very tight. We had ‘our’ itinerary laid out with what we wanted to do. Upon arrival, it felt like we were fitting into the Soneva schedule and our preferences were not really taken into account - it's best to openly communicate with your butler about your specific plans and ensure that you can engage in the activities that you want to do in your requested timeframe. On a final note, I would recommend contacting reservations at Soneva directly. We dealt with so many different people who were in a range of countries and found it very difficult to obtain the information we needed and were often given conflicting information. A few tips: 3 nights is not long enough You MUST get a slide, no matter how old you are! There is nothing more fun than sliding down that slide into the crystal clear warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Do the Soneva Unlimited! You will not have to worry about paying for anything. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable, where you can divulge until your heart is content. Ride the bikes everywhere you can and explore the island as there is a lot more to the place than just the villa and restaurants. There are lovely little beaches. We brought inflatable rafts with us, which were a lot of fun! Bring a drone!! You can only use the drone to fly over the entire resort during specified times - Wed, Fri and Sun 4:30-6:30pm; however you can fly it over your villa at other times if you are discreet. The signage around the island is not good - I got lost on my bike! A final note - we have travelled to many luxury places all around the world, and this is a clear favourite with its uniqueness and beauty. It's a must do for a once in a lifetime experience. The only downside is that it will make you want to come back again!

Dear Nicoleluzza, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! A big thank you for taking your time to share the amazing review with our TripAdvisor followers. We are pleased to learn that you had an amazing experience with us during your wedding celebration with us. To enjoy every facet of Soneva Unlimited and to explore our beautiful island it takes a few more days than 3 and we are glad that you chose to extend the holiday with us. Thank you for highlighting the endless experiences on offer which you had the opportunity to indulge such as the diverse cuisines at different dining destinations, the wellness escape at Soneva Soul, lunch and dinners with your toes in the sand while looking over the azure waters. Our Chapter 2 water reserves are uniquely designed in terms of structure, design, space and with a retractable roof to enjoy the twinkling night in the comfort of your bed. Our Hosts are always very passionate about their work. Thank you for highlighting Rahuma’s thoughtfulness to find the bracelet by snorkeling, tailoring your itinerary according to your preference. As well as the immaculate service by your villa attendant and the friendliness of our Food and Beverage Hosts. I will personally convey to them your kind words. It is unfortunate to hear that we were unable to meet your expectations on your arrival at the resort. At Soneva, our guests are welcomed with fresh local coconuts and only a few members of the management join to ensure the guests are taken to the villa straight away to relax. Our Soneva Soul Wellness Spa offers a brand-new gym overlooking the turquoise lagoon, where our guests can enjoy high-end fitness equipment. In the past year a lot of improvements have been made to the island, including our signage, especially near the brand new Chapter Two on the south side of the island. Our Hosts and I look forward to welcoming you again very soon for another unique experience. Best Wishes, Frederic Brohez

The service was exceptional. Everyone was very attentive and always smiling. The resort is surrounded by incredible transparent and clean water. You get to see sea animals passing near your villa. The food was very good aswell and has a variety of restaurants. They all use food from a garden so is very ecofriendly and healthy.

Soneva Jani is an ultra-luxurious overwater villas paradise, where sustainability has always been and continues to be a priority for everyone. Some feelings can never be explained by words… the only way to understand is to live them.. But what we can say is that every single minute of our stay was OUTSTANDING. Our overwater villa was very spacious and comfortable. We really enjoyed the concept of having our own private water slide from the 2nd floor. Something also really unique was the sliding roof in our bedroom to look at the stars at night. The food at all the restaurants was absolutely delicious, special mention for the overwater silent cinema restaurant (Cinema Paradiso) at Soneva Jani Chapter 2, which offers a really unique experience with the tastiest Japanese cuisine. Talking about food, having lunch at the Crab Shack, our feet in the sand is also an experience you should not miss. All the team was lovely and very professional. It was a real pleasure to discuss with Josje the resort manager that constantly ensured we were having the perfect time on the island. Thank you for everything! We can’t wait to come back one day

I would first like to start this review by saying how upset I am at Soneva Jani. They have ruined every other resort that we will stay at in the future because they have now set the standard by which every other resort will be judged and I seriously doubt anyone else can come close… The basics: 7 night stay in Chapter 2, one bedroom villa with a slide (a must) with the unlimited package for my family of 4 (kids ages 6 and 12). Transfers by seaplane were included and seamlessly arranged by Soneva. We felt like royalty being whisked away from the Malé airport. The villa: This thing is bigger than most single family homes. Rustic luxury is how they describe it and I think its the perfect description. There isn’t anything they haven’t thought of. Outlets for charging, amazing lighting, indoor and outdoor showers, an outdoor tub, huge deck space with ample lounge areas (I think I lost one of my kids for an hour or two one afternoon), fully stocked kitchen which they refill with all the snacks, beverages, and alcohol you could ask for. Second story deck/dining area to have dinner or breakfast and watch the sunrise/sunset. Glass bottom areas in the floor so that my 6 year old lost her mind every time she saw a fish. Bose speaker system throughout that you can connect your phone to. TV with Netflix, which you should be shot if you are using because you should be staring at the ocean view from your bed. And I can’t forget about the retractable roof to watch the stars at night as you drift off to sleep. Don’t even get me started about the amazing infinity pool and the water slide that make you feel like a kid again. Our villa attendant Athee was awesome, leaving little surprises for our family here and there and making our Villa really feel like our home away from home. The resort: I don’t have much to compare it to, but it seems quite large for the Maldives. Chapter 1, The Gathering, and a few restaurants are either a 3 minute boat ride or 10 minute buggy ride away. You also get e-bikes to get around the resort yourself which was a lot of fun. The island itself which connects the 2 Chapters has restaurants, beach areas, one of the spas, tennis court, jungle gym, a garden where the get a ton of their fresh veggies from and I’m sure there is more that I’m forgetting. We were there for a week and didn’t have near enough time to explore everything that it had to offer. The Food and Dining: My family are a bunch of foodies (yes, even my 6 year old) and these were some of the best and most memorable meals that we have ever had. Everything is fresh, prepared with thought and care, a ton of variety, and ever changing menus. The only one we regrettably didn’t have a chance to eat at was So Wild just because we ran out of time. The Crab shack truly lives up to its name as the “Worlds Most Romantic Restaurant”. You can’t beat the setting staring out at the blue lagoon under a shabby chic shack and indulging in some of the best crabs and seafood you’ll ever have. I literally had to give Chef Priyantha a hug at the end of our stay because he’s not only a genius but made me some meals/food that I will never forget in my lifetime. He also oversees the Director’s Cut restaurant (Japanese cuisine) with Cinema Paradiso (overwater cinema with a kids movie at 7:30 then an adult one at 9 to watch while you dine). By far some of the best sushi and Japanese food we have ever had. Breakfast at So Cold was always something to look forward to when we woke up and in villa dining was just as good as going to the restaurants. Overseas was a fantastic experience and I had authentic Thai at Down to Earth that I’m still thinking about. Experiences: With the unlimited package (worth every penny) we packed in as much as we could and didn’t regret any of it. From a castaway picnic, guided snorkeling, water sports, surf lessons, So Starstruck dinner etc. All were so much fun, we never felt rushed or overwhelmed and still had plenty of time for R&R at our villa. One of the highlights was a private beach BBQ dinner that made our family feel like we were the only ones in the entire Indian Ocean. The Spa: Included with the unlimited package was unlimited spa treatments which we took full advantage of. All the therapists were great and listening to the waves crash while getting a massage was our idea of heaven. My wife and I did something almost every day and my 12 year old son even got his first massage and is now addicted. I even received a few treatments from a visiting therapist, Julian, who specializes in sports massage/myofascial release who helped incredibly with a nagging hip/leg issue. The Staff: This is what makes this place truly special. Everyone genuinely cares about Soneva’s mission of sustainability as well as your well being. I’ve never left a resort and could say that I’ve made some lasting friendships like I did this time. Everyone remembers you, remembers your preferences, and treats you like family. I don’t want to leave any one out (and I may slaughter some of the spelling of the names) but Midhath made our dining experiences so much fun and amazing and is someone who I invited to come stay with us if he is ever in the States (that is, only if he brings his wife…she is an amazing pastry chef and chocolatier for the resort). “Specs” greeted us every morning with a smile at breakfast and made some incredible leaf animals and helicopters for my daughter which she loved. Joy was another standout that was always so attentive and so sweet to our family. Everyone goes out of their way to help. Even the General Manager Frederic, who happened to be at the jetty during one of our boat trips back to Chapter 2 was there helping our family board the boat during some choppy waters and almost found himself at the bottom of the lagoon because one of the boat ties accidentally came off. Last but not least was Ashab, our barefoot butler. This service comes with the unlimited package and made the trip for us. He was our go to guy for everything. If we needed to make some changes to the itinerary, done. My son wanted to do some surfing lessons, done…heck, he even went surfing with us and took pics and videos. He was the perfect combination of attentive yet giving us our space and precious family time. For example he came snorkeling with us and it was my daughters first time and she was pretty scared and not a good swimmer. He was right there helping us out so the rest of could get in some good snorkeling and she ended up having the time of her life after she spotted a sea turtle. We consider Ashab a member of the the family now and can’t thank him enough for making this the best week of our lives. Sorry for the long winded review but this place deserves it. Just do yourself a favor and book it. You wont regret it.
