Four of us enjoyed in lovely subtle surroundings a delicious dinner, twice cooked Cheese soufflé, absolutely scrumy! Ribeye steak chunky and tender, duck breast pink and perfect, sea bass iwonderful, on a bed of pulses, all of us. Couldn't manage pudding, so have a great excuse to go back again and try some!

We booked a table on the strength of the dining menu published on the website. The dining room is very nicely decorated- as is the whole establishment. However, from this evening's experience, this is a gastro pub, not a restaurant. The first clue was that the young waitress didn't ask my husband to sample the wine before pouring, and I... More

We booked the Kings Head for the Sunday offer whereby you spend more than £60 on food and drink and the room is £40. We were booked into the spitfire room. This room is not in the pub itself it has its own entrance. This room has stairs up to the main bedroom and seating area and then different stairs... More

I hired the function/skittles room downstairs for a surprise birthday party - 11 of us in total. We had the 'skittle dogs' & lasagne option (with veggie version for me!), and everyone commented on how delicious it was. The service was excellent and the skittles were such great fun, we even managed to get the sound system working and played... More

We stopped here for a quiet lunch and the menu looked good. Our starter of the terrine was well presented, but the terrine itself lacked flavour. Our main courses were nice, I did have to send mine back but enjoyed its replacement. Was happy with the overall cost, but I don't feel adding 10% to all bills is necessary. To... More

Nice village, nice people, nice restaurant, nicely done rooms. However, space is a little cramped in these small inns and the standard of house keeping below standard: inside our room it just does not feel clean enough. I do like this place and would love to return one day. And if they can sort out the housekeeping issue, then this... More

Very friendly service. There was a short delay in getting food but was kept informed as to why the delay. Food was excellent and well worth the wait. Well presented and cooked to perfection. The steak was cooked as ordered, i.e. "blue". Many restaurants don't seem to be able to cook steaks like this! Looking forward to returning and sampling... More

This was a surprise. We had expected a fairly run down pub trying hard to impress: instead we found this place a real treat, with large, comfortable, clean rooms, great food and friendly service. We had Edward VI room with a double four poster bed (!), the only downside being that the road outside was quite busy so we had... More

When it is served at the Kings Head, Hursley. We booked a table for 8 several days in advance of our visit but ended up having to sit on a cramped bench seat away from the formal restaurant area. After waiting 20 minutes for menus we had to find a staff member for them to be brought. The service was... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A warm welcome, fine home cooked fare and traditional rural hospitality await you ... The King's Head free house is a traditional Four Star Georgian coaching inn situated in the historic downland village of Hursley, just south of Winchester in Hampshire. We offer a warm welcome and traditional rural hospitality to rival all other inns and hotels in Winchester. The village of Hursley is most well known for its strong associations with the family of Oliver Cromwell; it is for this reason that it is believed The King's Head originally gained its name. Our aim is to provide a relaxed and cheerful environment for locals and visitors alike in which to enjoy locally sourced ales, fine wines, home-cooked food, or even a night or two in one of our carefully restored hotel rooms. 'There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or Inn' Samuel Johnson ... more   less
