We arrived after travelling up the narrow and winding road during a very heavy rainstorm. Although we were a bit early, our room was ready and had a lovely view (once the weather cleared) down the valley all the way to the coast. The room was a good size, very comfortable and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. Breakfast was exactly as we needed after such a huge but delightful meal at M.A.T.E.S. the night before, yoghurt with fruit, croissant, bread and jam and fresh fruit plus endless coffee. Due to the inclement weather we didn’t see a lot of the town but we enjoyed what we did see.
This is a unique hotel. It is situated in this unusual town, Caltabellota, with houses build on a steep mountain side more or less on top of each other. The owner of the hotel spent 5 years doing the complete restoration. The result is awesome. Many old features are preserved. The interior of the spacious bedrooms are colourful and full of imagination. They reflect a feeling of joy. We were there on a Sunday, when the restaurant was closed, but the local pizza bar was an excellent alternative. We enjoyed all the charm and local life and of course some superb pizzas.
My husband & I stayed 3 nights in this lovely small hotel. We loved our large room with high ceiling & which had a beautiful painting on it. The room had two balconies & a very nice, new bathroom. Giuseppe, one of the owners, really took great care of us. We are so appreciative of his care & attention to his guests. A wonderful breakfast is served each morning the charming breakfast room. The room prices are very reasonable. Nice place to explore the area from. You can also eat dinner in the family owned restaurant called M.A.T.E.S which is a short walk up the street. Delicious family style food. You will not go away hungry!
I stayed for 3 nights at Sotto Le Stelle (which translates to “under the stars”) in the town of Caltabellotta. This is a tiny little town, way up on the side of a mountain. It looks impossible to exist, but there it is! Giuseppe who runs the B&B will help you park your car, so don’t worry too much when you see the very narrow streets upon arrival. The owners of Sotte Le Stelle also own the only restaurant in town - MATES - which was really very good. I ate there twice in the 3 nights I stayed. Sotto Le Stelle itself was wonderful: the house has been lovingly restored and you can tell that the family takes great pride in their B&B. The rooms are all very different (I peaked into a few). Mine was beautiful, with a nice little balcony off the bedroom and even a small balcony off the bathroom! The room itself was spacious, particularly for European standards. The breakfast was very good, and when I mentioned that I would LOVE to have eggs one morning, Giuseppe gladly prepared me the most delicious “savory” breakfast as a special treat. It was a really great value, and would highly recommend staying here.…
The house has been lovingly restored and is quite stunning. Rooms are spacious and well appointed, and Giuseppe is very helpful. It was delightful to be so off the beaten track, yet within easy reach of Sciacca, which is well worth visiting. But for the heat we'd have loved to have explored some of the tracks around Caltabellotta - perhaps another time! Together with MATES restaurant this makes for a truly wonderful getaway.
