Our second trip to IP...after much drama and two cancellations due to travel restrictions, we finally were able to get all of our schedules lined up and head to Bocas (13 in the group) in April. This was originally scheduled for XMAS 2020 week but with travel restrictions and health concerns we decided to wait - Herolf and the IP staff were so understanding and flexible - I can't imagine the amount of travel issues his team had to deal with during the last year. We were concerned what the conditions were going to be like after a year of being virtually empty...I can say we were so surprised and happy to get back to IP. The place is great...we were able to have the place to ourselves and Herolf set-up a team to try and give us the same experience we had pre-Covid. This was not an easy task given the IP staff was normally over 20 strong and it was down to less than 5 - but we communicated with Herolf several times and he did everything in his power to deliver a very memorable week for the group - and he succeeded beyond expectations. Food was great, meals were served in a group setting to minimize stress on the kitchen but it worked out perfectly for our group - cheers to the Chef and her help, they did a great job. This is a special place - the beach is beautiful and we had 4 miles of beach to ourselves - it was sad to realize the beach bar would not be the lively place it was in 2019 but Herolf opened it up for us and we hung out there every day enjoying the waves, the beers and the great cushioned couches at the Bon Bon...many cribbage games, many scrabble games and a bunch of great memories for the week. If you like to be off the beaten path while maintaining a high level of service, healthy and fresh food and beautifully designed villas - put IP on your list of places to visit. Also, many of us were working remotely and the wifi was sufficient for all our needs...wish I was still there! Thanks again to Herolf, Choco, JP and Christine and the rest of the IP helpers for a great week. Hope to see you again down the line.

My wife and I arrived and were greeted by Choco. He is a super nice guy and explained that the resort is still in covid operations and that there is a limited staff. He gave us a tour of the resort and again explained the limited service available and if we needed anything to contact him. The restaurant is closed but we could have full use of the kitchen and room cleaning can only be done every 3 days. Which we were fine with. The are a couple of restaurants within walking distance or you can always take the Bluff Bus or a taxi into town to eat or buy groceries. There is a pizza oven with fresh made pizza that can be ordered until 5pm at the resort. The property itself is beautiful! We loved the open air concept of the rooms. One only needs a fan to keep the air moving to stay very comfortable....even to point of needing a blanket at night. If you like the sound of waves lapping on the beach...you will sleep wonderfully! The grounds and rooms are very clean and the pool area is also very clean. Since you are in the jungle/rain forest, its very common to see sloths, howler monkeys, parrots and many other exotic birds. Surprisingly there were no issues with insects or biting bugs! The beach (Bluff Beach) is absolutely beautiful. We were there during "surfing" season, but rarely saw anyone on the beach. Most of the time we had the beach all to ourselves.....all 3kms of it! I would highly recommend Island Plantation, especially if you want to get away from party atmosphere of Bocas Town and want a secluded beach. Hopefully the covid restrictions will be lifted soon and the resort (and all the others for that matter) can fully open with all services. We will defiantly be returning, as it is our new favorite destination.

From Dream Place to a DESASTER Place- Arriving at the place the “ manager “ took our little bags to the bar a the Recepcion is not used any more ( also totally dirty ) after checking in and giving him the money for eh room in advance ) without getting a receive - he let us take our luggage by ourselves to the room and walked away proudly . 5 years ago it was very well mangaged - now a desastre ! The “manager “ is hardly to be seen -our visible ( only in the beach you can meet him frequently) without manner - once we had organized that the cook stays a little longer to cook us a meal- he asked us to be there at 18:00 punctual - so that the stuff can leave early. We were there at 18:00 but nobody could be found ... we called out a finally after 20 min I called Choco “ the manager “to ask him what is happening - he just cut off the call when I told him that this is NOT the way he should take care of the guests ! Guess he never learned how to behave !!! he is bad for the business - not taking care of anything !! Pool is falling apart - very dirty in all the public places like terasse or bar - room service every two days only !!! The woman who cleaned does the basics - better not to look into the corners - under the bed our closely to the room itself. The cushions at the public terasse are full of stains - the kitchen one can use to be able to eat something is very basic - also dirty. The fridges you can put your stuff are also dirty like the whole room there are in. Urgently this “ manager “ should be out of here the earlier th better To save energy we always switch off the lights when not needed. In all the other rooms which are NOT occupied the light on the terasse is always on - while the light in the garden around the pool is getting switched off at 20:30??The terasse around the pool never is never been cleaned - the cushions are on the benches day and night - in the sun - in the rain. When the stuff ( there is the oven on from 12:00-17:00 ) for pizza is not needed - which is like this most of the time - they just sit around IN THE aérea which are there for the guests It a a place which has been put with lots and love - style and art - but managed my such a person who is not interested in nothing it will fall apart

Dear Guest, First of all I’m so sorry that you perceived Island Plantation to be a disaster. I keep in contact with my staff on a daily basis and also check on the many cameras installed around the entire property very often so that I can first hand see what’s going on when I’m not present at the property. Agustin (aka Choco), the manager, has been with us for almost three years and is regarded as an excellent and very caring personas noted in many reviews. I’ve been very proud of him for how he goes above and beyond to assist our guests. For instance, when you arrived at Island Plantation and you realized that you had forgotten the electric plug adaptors (your plugs I assume are European style) he without hesitation lent you his own adaptor so that you could charge your phones etc. The next day he went into town just to buy you one. That was also the evening that you had the dinner scheduled (which we normally don’t do but he gladly arranged at your request) and his taxi coming back from town got stuck in the sand on the road and also blocking passage for other cars. He called me from the scene and was very upset as he would be arriving late with some of the ingredients for the dinner and he was also upset over the phone call he’d received from you. He told me that he’d instructed the cook to come up with alternatives to what you wanted but you had declined that option. I was also told that you didn’t like any part of our hot cooked-to-order room service breakfast we offered as you wanted exotic fruits that aren’t available on the island and you only eat eggs once a week, etc. Based on my staff’s feedback I specifically arranged with a neighbor hotel to receive you for breakfast so that you would have another breakfast option. Before you booked at Island Plantation you contacted me and we exchanged several voice messages. I specifically told you that the rate you would get was cut in half ($82 per night is what you paid) since your last stay due to the Covid related operational changes (restaurant closed, lower staff level due to low demand with travel restrictions etc.). I also told you that breakfast wasn’t guaranteed (although shortly thereafter I was able to get a team to do this service for us) but that you would be able to use a shared kitchen. We rely on all the users to leave the area perfectly clean. I will be discussing the cleanliness with Augustin but based on feedback from staff and other guests I don’t see how the entire hotel could have been as dirty as you describe it. Housekeeping, due COVID restrictions in order to comply with government mandated reduced social physical contact, we don’t offer daily housekeeping anymore (every two-three days now). I am currently in New York City in Manhattan at a hotel that I am paying almost double what your rate was at Island Plantation, and they only offer housekeeping every four days. To continue on addressing more concerns of yours, there are certain lights that are on 24/7 for safety (it gets very slippery in the rainforest) and they hardly use any energy. These include the front porch of the rooms and also in the restaurant area. All other garden lights shut off earlier. The request by your husband to turn off all the lights (that are not bright) was denied due to the safety protocol of the hotel. My staff has also been instructed to not touch our guests’ luggage, in accordance with the pandemic protocol. It is correct that the pool tile has come off in some places. This is a very difficult issue as we aren’t connected to city water. To repair this we will have to empty the pool entirely (28,000 gallons of water), repair it, and then refill it. How to fill that amount of water back into the pool when we rely on rainwater catchment to run the entire establishment? We have done it once before but it requires staying shut down for months until the pool is filled back up. The work is being scheduled and I’m very sorry that a few missing tiles contributed to ruining your stay at Island Plantation. You failed to mention several other things, such as when you arrived you didn’t want to be in a room that had other rooms next to yours although this is what you had booked. The manager kindly offered you another room that you accepted. It was in a slightly lower room category so you refused to pay the full amount for your reservation as you expected- a discount because you decided to move to a different room. In the end, I wasn’t going to quibble over $80 so I left it at that. You continued to send me a string of messages of everything that was wrong with the hotel, such as the pool guy chlorinating the pool at 10am (he only works during the day) and how terrible that was as you could get chlorine in your face or in your hair. You also lamented about the cushions being left out in the rain. Island Plantation is in the middle of the rain forest so we often get sudden downpours and hence, anything not covered by a roof get soaked. That is why cushions etc outside are made of a material that can get wet. I assume one of the photos you posted on TA is to demonstrate the result of a downpour? I blew up this photo and checked on the cameras and the pool water seems sparkling clean to me. Obviously being close to the beach there will be a bit of sand here and there in the pool (which you also wrote me about) that has to be vacuumed out on a regular basis. To be quite frank, Augustin the manager, became increasingly frustrated with your constant complaints about everything about the hotel so I instructed him personally to try to interact with you as little as possible as with my almost 40 years as a professional in the industry, I believe that there was nothing anyone could do at Island Plantation to make you or your husband happy. I think that is why you mostly saw Agustin on the beach instead of offering his assistance constantly as he did in the beginning of your stay. Again, I’m very sorry that your experience with Island Plantation was what it was. I hope that your next choice of vacation place will better live up to your expectations. I take comfort in knowing that some guests that stayed around the same time as you had an absolutely wonderful time at Island Plantation . Thank you again for sharing your experience!

My wife and I stayed here for a few nights while working our way through the different islands of Bocas del Toro, everything about our stay here was outstanding. Agustin greeted us upon arrival. checked us in, gave us a tour of the entire property and was always available for anything we needed. His customer service and attention to detail was much appreciated. The grounds and property are beautiful and well maintained. The beach was perfect for long walks on beautiful sand and quick swims in between some incredible waves. We stayed in one of the Luxury Beachfront Suites named Jasmine which was an AMAZING space. No A/C necessary, cool breezes and cool ocean sounds all night long - we both slept like babies every night. Great breakfast in the restaurant every morning, great bar and drinks at the beach, the hand tossed brick oven pizza we had every afternoon as a snack before dinner was delicious and the service from everyone all around at Island Plantation was five stars. We also appreciated the location as there's a few great restaurants within easy walking distance of the resort for anyone who wants to venture out for dinner a night or two and check out something local and different. Also worth mentioning is all of the cool frogs, birds and wildlife here, it's the perfect combination of jungle and beach. We highly recommend Island Plantation, we couldn't imagine anyone having anything less than an outstanding experience here!

Hotel very expensive and very bad value for money about an average of 220 Us taxes included Very difficult to reach, not a road only a jungle track very bumpy and unreachable during heavy rainy season No regular bus route Taxi ride from 15 Us during the day to 25 Us or more during the night (some taxis even refuse to go there) For all your activities like boat rides, (the most interesting activity in the Island) or go to a lobster restaurant you must add up about 40 Us taxi ride, and loose an hour trip time The hotel itself is in a nice surrounding but no AC, only a fan , so you have the choice, you don’t sleep with fan noise or a room too hot Bad protection against mosquitos If you don’t want to go to the city, the hotel restaurant is expensive with very basic food It is supposed to be a beach hotel, but the sea is too rough to swim, Not much to do swimming pool, or walking in the jungle with venomous snakes The hotel has no protection at night I came back at night and the gate was closed, I was given a key which did not work, I just pushed a little on the main gate which opened widely The person at reception was very arrogant. When you arrive they take a print of your credit card, I asked him to send me a mail that everything was paid he said he would do it as “I have only one word” I am still waiting I had to cancel my card to be sure it would not be misused You can find better hotels, cheaper , with AC and sea view in other parts of the island
