Inspired by Bali’s renowned uma, or ancient rice paddy fields, Umana Bali features 72 luxurious villas, each with its own private infinity-edge pool and outdoor hot tub, laid out in cascading terraces to afford panoramic views from every vantage point. A secluded escape, Umana Bali gracefully blends curated experiences, unparalleled clifftop vistas and local culture to immerse guests in the Balinese way of life through a myriad of resolutely authentic encounters that yields new discoveries for both first-time visitors and seasoned Bali travelers. The design of the resort is a fresh, modern interpretation of motifs found in Balinese architecture and textiles, crafts and dance. Umana Bali will offer a unique distillation of Bali’s Tri Hita Karana philosophy, which emphasizes the harmonious relationship among humans, nature, and the divine, and the belief that well-being and happiness will come naturally when all three pillars are balanced.

In January 2024, I checked into the One Bedroom Ocean Pool Villa at Umana Bali, which opened its doors in November 2023. Set within the scenic and exclusive clifftop Ungasan area which occupies the southernmost tip of Bali island, the 72-villa property was formerly a Banyan Tree property before it underwent an extensive renovation and became managed by LXR Hotels & Resorts, an emerging brand under the Hilton Honors hotel loyalty programme. The property is 30 minutes away from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Set atop Ungasan’s limestone cliffs amidst cascading terraces reminiscent of uma (rice paddy fields in Balinese), the villa-only resort draws inspirations from traditional Balinese culture, not just in terms of guest experiences but also its design elements. Two sculptures of Balinese dancers at the lobby are coated with ancient Balinese coins; the metal and handblown glass chandelier in the lobby is inspired by the fan-like movements of the legong kraton, a traditional Balinese dance which used to be performed only within closed palace walls in front of the royal family; your in-room slippers are made using pandan and mendong (Javanese water grass) fibres, while the vanity kits are created using recycled banana leaf paper. In terms of activities and wellness, The Lohma Spa offers an extensive selection of treatments, including group-based sound healing and holotropic breathwork therapies, with their signature treatment being an Indonesian massage that incorporates the use of energised gemstones. Elsewhere, the resort offers a private spa pool, a main infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean, a fitness centre and even a dynamic kids’ club to occupy the ‘ickle ones during their stay. The hotel's clifftop chapel is particularly stunning, reminding me of Final Fantasy VII's One Winged Angel, Sephiroth. Offering soaring ceilings and soothing views of the Indian Ocean from a distance, the 403sqm One Bedroom Ocean Pool Villa was spectacular in so many ways. My favourite part of the villa was the outdoor terrace which features sun loungers, a gazebo with daybed a private infinity-edge pool (very swimmable, not just plunge) and, most impressively, an outdoor hot-tub. Because of the terraced layout of the resort, you enjoy maximum visual privacy even during your moments of outdoor aquatic frolic. You can access the pool directly from the bedroom, and a stone path from the pool connects you to the outdoor shower space and the bathroom should you wish not to introduce dampness to the bedroom area. The fact that the hot tub is heated means that, even after nightfall, the pool area remains very useable indeed, and post-dinner I had a magical time thrashing in the waters whilst reading about stargazing and trying to locate Orion’s Belt in the shimmering Bali sky. The living area features a sofa seating area with direct access to the outdoor terrace, a kitchenette with a dining table, a pantry offering Nespresso coffee and teas from local brand Brew Me and an extensive minibar comprising a variety of snacks, beverages, wines and liquor, including health tonics from Balinese wellness brand JWU Botanicals, Citadelle Gin No Mistake Old Tom, Johnnie Walker Black Label as well as a stocked wine fridge (!). A portable and wireless Sonos speaker is available for you to soundtrack your stay. The bedroom features smart control panels, wireless charging and a dresser with hairdryer, while the cavernous bathroom is fitted with double vanities, a wardrobe area and an enclosed rainfall shower space with shower amenities courtesy of Botanical Essentials. Set against glass walls and a stone wall backdrop with plenty of natural light for that photogenic pensive/sultry bathtub moment, and with incense sticks, bath salts and even bath bombs provided for that extra pampering soak, the free-standing bathtub is one of the villa's key attractions. The full review inclusive of dining experiences and photographs is available on Secret Life of Fatbacks, a luxury travel website.

Hotel's Favorite
I had the pleasure of spending 5 magnificent nights at Umana LRX Bali, and I can confidently say that this is the hotel with the best service in Bali! I travel around the world, staying in the best hotels such as Burj Al Arab, The Ritz-Carlton, ,Aman Tokyo or Four Seasons Hotel George and the service in Umana deserves special recognition. The villas are modern and beautifully renovated, featuring a stunning pool and incredible panoramic views of sunsets from the villa. The staff pays attention to every detail, delivering fresh fruits and delicious cookies to the villa every day. The breakfast is phenomenal, and I highly recommend trying the Umana Breakfast with avocado and lobster. The gym is new and equipped with all the necessary equipment, and the spa is excellent. There's even a dedicated space for yoga! Oh, how gladly I would spend 2 weeks here. Umana LRX Bali is truly a gem that exceeds expectations. I can't wait to return and experience the unparalleled luxury and hospitality that Umana LRX Bali offers once again.

The biggest issue is cleanliness at this property. The hotel gives out welcome amenities in the form of customized coconuts (my name was misspelled) and some sort of cake. It would be a very nice welcome amenity, if I didn't look closer and find a LITERAL MOSQUITO along with a few ants trapped beneath the glass dome over the food. I took a video of the incident but can't upload that here so screenshots from the video will have to do. After a call, staff came to replace the food items. They also offered to spray the room with insecticide as there were ants on the dining table and throughout the living room area. Notably, they did not replace the coconuts and I did not bother to complain or drink them. No other service recovery was offered. To make things worse, after they sprayed the room I found a couple of large, dead bugs in the bedroom. I will not upload any pictures of that to respect anyone who is squeamish of bugs. To further elaborate, the villas themselves are clean. I understand we are in nature, but the inside of the villas themselves should be totally isolated from the outside. We kept every entrance to the villa closed at ALL times and unfortunately, due to small gaps between doors that are not properly sealed bugs got into the room often. I am deathly scared of mosquitos as I have gotten dengue fever on a previous trip to Bali, and was stung more times in 1 day than the week I spent at the Ritz-Carlton in Nusa Dua COMBINED with the two weeks I spent in Jakarta before that. Mosquito repellant helped to an extent, but still... Other aspects of the property I was disappointed by are the food options and the HHonors Diamond recognition. The food prices are quite high for the area and the taste was not up to par. The only options for dining are the All Day Dining restaurant and room service, which is what we ultimately settled for. The exception to this is the stunning breakfast that is complimentary for Diamond members. It is delicious and the staff there, like most of the other staff at the resort, are exceptional. Truly the best aspect of the property. As for the Diamond benefits here, you only receive an upgrade to a partial oceanview villa (when available) even if there are plenty of higher category upgrades available. Very unfortunate and not what I experienced at Hyatt or Marriott properties in Southeast Asia. The spa facilities were not yet complete when I stayed here in early January, so I can't comment on how they fare either. Positive aspects: The private pool area in each room is amazing. I loved lounging here (with plenty of mosquito repellant on) with the provided bluetooth speaker. It was especially stunning at sunset. The size of the villa was gigantic as well. The master bathroom itself probably 40 square meters/400 square feet. The public pool area is awesome as well. A huge infinity pool with nobody around during my stay. I did have to request drinks manually by going to the neighboring bar, even though there should have been service at the pool (especially when it was that quiet). Fantastic, high quality breakfast with a la carte options (including a dish with lobster and caviar) and a small buffet. Efficient buggy service to take you anywhere you want in the resort. To summarize, the Umana Bali, formerly a Banyan Tree hotel, enjoys a stunning location providing excellent views. Most staff are very friendly here, especially at the breakfast restaurant. I loved the private pools in each villa. However, I don't know if I can recommend this hotel to my friends and family as there are plenty of better options in Bali, especially at the price this hotel is charging.

Chose to stay here over the many villa options in Bali as I am a Hilton diamond member. The villa and breakfast and ground staff were all top notch. Wira was especially excellent in hospitality, did a very nice hotel tour. They were nice to do anniversary decor too. However being a new hotel perhaps they lack diamond recognition. They refuse to give ocean view villas to diamond and only the partial ocean view room which doesn’t have much of a view of the ocean at all. Although it’s our benefit to choose our preferred view as diamond, this hotel would rather leave the villa empty instead of allowing a diamond to get a better view as mentioned by check in. It’s the same type of room just a nicer view yet they refused. I hope Hilton looks into this. Another issue was the monkeys, they jump on the villa roofs in the morning and evenings. Do not leave things outside . If they could improve diamond recognition this hotel would have higher ratings

Dear Diana,  Thank you for being a valued member and choosing to stay with us. As you mentioned, Diamond members are entitled to a complimentary upgrade to the next villa category, subject to availability upon check-in. In your case, the villa upgrade was provided from Tropical Garden to the Partial Ocean villa type. Additionally, Diamond members receive other exclusive perks, and you can find more information on our hotel's website.   Due to the captivating design and location of our villas, they often attract the interest of local fauna. To avoid any surprises, we kindly ask that you keep doors closed and refrain from leaving food outside.   We do look forward to welcome you back to Umana Bali soon for another delightful stay.   Warm regards, Serpil Guney General Manager

The Jumana has been totally revamped and very soon will be opened officially as LXR Resort by Hilton. An amazing property with super friendly people and positive vibes make your stay a really amazing one. The manicured gardens are amazingly well kept. The panoramic pool villas are huge , fully renovated, great bed for a good night sleep. The view is stunning, directly to the Indian Ocean . The private pool is huge enough for few laps and is complimented with a hot powerful jacuzzi. A beautiful gazebo, sunbeds and an outdoor garden shower . The service and the cleanliness are really great. The little touches in the room , the attention to details, the traditional cakes, the perfect turn down services really makes you feel so relaxed and welcomed. The commune restaurant has an amazing breakfast with a combination of buffet and Ala carte. Do not miss the lobster scrambled eggs . Main pool is a great spot for photography. Complimentary transfers to Melasti beach anytime . The team is led by a great leader Ms Serbil who is really making sure everyone and everything are in a tip top condition. Verdict : an amazing place for relaxation with a great personalized service. Definitely we will be back . Thank you Ms Serbil and your great team for such an incredible stay.

I booked and fully paid for a pool villa here prior to my trip, and received confirmation from the hotel GM in advance confirming their receipt of my payment. But they refused to allow me to check in because the Apple Pay card number for my check-in deposit was different than the number they had for the original payment. Within Apple Pay I showed them that Apple actually shows two card numbers - the actual card number and a second Apply Pay card number they create to protect the customer - and both of these identically matched the numbers they had. They even went through my online bank statement, which showed the room and the deposit money having already been sent out of the account they had on record, but they still refused to let me checkin. The manager came over to help, but offered no assistance and then stood against the wall and watched for another 20 minutes while we struggled with his junior desk clerk. I travel constantly, but have never seen such inept and unhelpful management at a 5* hotel in my life. They hugely inconvenienced my friend and I, and did it for the most pointless reason. Meanwhile I'm still waiting for my refund. Don't reward these people with your business. I then made a second reservation at the Oberoi and it was fantastic. On the opposite of the spectrum in terms of customer service. Save yourself the headache (they were fighting with another guest about payments during my saga) and book something else. Many facilities are still being refurbished, and so they can't b used, and with the reservation itself only included one breakfast, even though there were two os us.

Beautiful villa with gorgeous views, and an amazing restaurant. During my stay, I met the front manager Raka when I came to the lobby to book a table at Kudeta and he helped me to arrange it without any hassle. During my visit to Kudeta, he surprised my wife and me with complimentary cocktails named after my daughter as gifts for our anniversary. WOW! The level of personalized service he provided was above and beyond anything I've ever experienced before. It was the service that made the resort stand out! It was an excellent experience and I can't wait to come back when Jumana is fully operational.

Could not recommend this hotel enough if you are looking for a luxury escape in Uluwatu. The photos do not to it justice - the private villa is bigger and more beautiful in person! The staff were extremely attentive and so lovely, which added to the overall luxe experience. Great value, would definitely stay again. Worthy to note that is it 30 minutes from Uluwatu town however I think it is so worth it, a little slice of heaven in Bali.
