This resort is not up to par with many other timeshare resorts I have been to. I think that the only people that would give it 5 stars are the ones that don't mind being nickeled and dimed and have a lot of money to blow and don't mind doing it. For the rest of us who are trying to watch what they spend, don't go. I guess I'll start with positives because that list is short. Positives: friendly and nice staff beautiful resort with a crocodile and flamingo sanctuary and other wildlife roaming around beautiful pools some fun activities dish soap and sponge, bar soap, shampoo, lotion, sewing kit, shower cap, and shoe polishing sponge provided Decent sized refrigerator with a small freezer compartment plentiful towels twice daily room service--morning is the typical; evenings, they empty garbage and make the sofa beds if you are using them and give you Hershey Kisses Shuttle service was actually fairly efficient when we were there (Thanksgiving week) There are ice machines in the buildings The negatives list is super long so I hope you're ready. Negatives: No paper towels, salt/pepper, or dishwasher provided--you can pay to have them wash your dishes or you must do it yourself No free coffee or filters; no free drinking water in the room or anywhere on the resort except in the gym. No oven Parking is 100 pesos per night--you have to call at least 15 min in advance so they can have your car ready and accessible No hot tubs No lockers/changing rooms or indoor showers for you to use if you are using the pools/beach after checkout. We were shampooing our hair at the pool showers outside. Depending on which of the hotels you are staying at, you may be restricted from going into certain areas such as certain pools and Spatium (spa/fitness center); you also cannot ride the smaller golf carts/trams as those are private shuttles reserved for the VIP members Credit card hold was $1500USD. We balked, and they lowered it to $500. Many of the staff have no idea what they are talking about or what they are doing. e.g. One time, we were sent on a different tram than usual and told that would take us to our room. Long story short, we ended up taking 3 different trams (when it normally is just 1), and it would have been more had we not told them we were not getting off again. One of the drivers even scolded the person who told us to get on the 2nd tram. Prior to arrival, I called to ask what was provided in the rooms. One person told me that we could get coffee filters and toothbrushes for free. I thought that was strange, so I called back and spoke with someone else who said that was NOT the case. I also asked what the Grand Mayan gave us access to that the Bliss and Mayan Palace didn't get. They told me the lazy river. When I arrived, I found out that was wrong as it's part of Jungala which is extra. At checkin, we were told we could use a different card than the one used to place the hold. However, at checkout, they then told us that we had to use the same card. I'm not sure if the 1st person told us wrong or the checkout person was just inept. Different staff told us different times that the tram runs. I still don't really know when it runs or if you have to schedule it at off hours. Super expensive restaurants and stores. We did not spend any money there as a result. Very dated equipment in the gym--some were a little rickety; one elliptical just didn't work Lots of walking so be prepared Tram stops make no sense as they are very far from the elevators. They could stop at the elevators, but they choose not to. Laundry is expensive, even the self serve laundry I am a member (unfortunately), so I can't accurately comment on the resort fees. However, from what I've heard, they are ridiculous when you exchange from Interval or RCI. No recycling. Room was not in tip top shape as you would expect from this kind of resort. Stains were on the seat cushions, knife was dull, shower drain had screws sticking out. Most of the resort activities cost extra. TIps: 1. Use your room towels as your pool towels. They looked to be the same to me. Then you don't have to worry about the $25 charge for not returning a pool towel card. 2. If you have a car, always call at least 15-20 minutes in advance 3. Look at your bill closely. They add a donation in there that you can request be taken off. 4. Since it's a jungle, wear insect repellent. 5. If you have any questions, ask at least 2 different people to verify the information. 6. They gave us 2 envelopes for tipping for maid service. One is the morning maid, and one is the evening maid. We tipped the morning one a lot more but had to ask them who was who. 7. Building 12 of the Grand Mayan is closest to the central lobby where you get your car but furthest from the pool I will also be posting this on the general Vidanta Riviera Maya page.…
