Good standard hotel with a quirky layout and great view. On a slopey area at top of town its very close to shops and restaurants. 10-15 min walk to beach or use free shuttle. I believe this hotel to be good value for its 4 star? Breakfast provided in airy restaurant was very good. All the staff were very friendly and amiable.
So, there is no lift.. you are driven to your Building (1-7) by golf buggy which we found a fun activity. Not normally any wait and you call reception for return trip at any time. We had a superior pool view, room was big, nice balcony. Twin beds so if you want double best to ask in advance.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for just over a week in January. the hotel on arrival was beautiful...we got excited when we were driving up to it and could see it perched on the hill. The hotel is immaculate. The rooms were modern, clean and spacious. The staff were super friendly, especially the lovely Receptionists who always greeted us with a smile and asked us how our day was. The morning buffet was good enough - couldnt really fault it. The food was nice too - had room service on occasion and my boyfriend and I agreed it was tasty! I must forgot to mention the pool, it is a beautiful infinity pool with nice views across Karon. I found it very relaxing as it wasn't crowded. The Poolside waiter was great too - I forgot his name but he was 'Captain'. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this hotel. Wonderful.

We have lived in Thailand for 2 years, often escaping to the beach. Normally don't write reviews but we were really disappointed by Phunaka.

Yes it has a beautiful view, especially from the infinity pool, and nice to get away from the very touristy and not very nice Karon centre and beach, however...

Check in and check out best sum up the staff and service. Over 25 minutes for both experiences with no-one acknowledging us or inviting us to take a seat in a hot lobby. Staff overall fairly friendly but not well trained, not customer focused enough and very limited English which I can usually forgive but like they didn't care enough whether we were there or not.

Aircon broke in our room twice and again was met with a lazy "okay, someone will fix" and then no update on status until we chased.

Facilities are not 4 star and not a resort setup. Pool area only has 12 beds so of busy no chance of getting one. Pool bar is a make shift set up. Gym...is not a a gym. Nothing worked and like someone ran out of money to finish the facilities off. No spa facilties on site. Yes a shuttle but as some guests have said - one way only. Internet only really available in the lobby as rooms no strong enough. Overall food okay... But overpriced for what it is. Can find better food in the town.
Positive was a voucher for a free coffee and 30% off the restaurant good.

Lobby bar is depressing and our 1st drink in there (as we waited for our room) we couldn't hear each other over the bartender's disco music on so loud!

Overall like I said, we don't often feel disappointed in Thailand but wanted to ensure others are aware, especially if you are travelling long distance for your holiday!

We had booked a double bed, but apparently you can't count on this. Instead, we got two single beds that could not be moved together. We contacted the reception, but unfortunately we were not given another room. Please be aware of this before booking. In addition, there was a cockroach in the toilet on the first day. The toilet stank of sewage throughout our stay. We wrote a note to the cleaning staff about this, but nothing changed, so it must be a stench that cannot be removed. This was very disgusting. We also experienced no hot water in the shower on two of the days. Last but not least, I would advise against booking the hotel for people with walking difficulties, as it is very steep and there are many stairs to climb. All in all, you can find much better hotels for the same price.

While I am writing this review we are having breakfast in Phunaka restaurant. The resort had arranged airport pick up for us which saved us from the hassle of traveling over an hour from airport to the resort on our own. We were cheerfully greeted and genuinely welcomed by the crew. My partner loved the welcome drink.
Our room turned out to be reasonably spacious with large bathroom, comfortable furnishing, balcony with big Jacuzzi and beautiful view. All service requests or issues have been addressed promptly, e.g. we had little problem with Jacuzzi and we reported that to front desk. When we reached our room in less than 5 minutes the service man was awaiting up there to fix the tub. Staff are friendly and very caring who remember you and proactively take care of your needs.
We had fun swimming and taking pictures in infinite pool which is easily accessible, along the hill with Andaman sea view. The pool is big and well maintained. The lift that transports guests up the steep hill perhaps operates 24 hours. If you do not prefer to use lift, walk down the stairs as slopes, which are almost vertical, can cause injury. Complimentary breakfast in the restaurant has varied choices for you if you have time to enjoy it since tours usually start early morning. We did not have a chance to peep into gym and spa.
Mostly good things to talk about this wonderful resort. It has its own share of pitfalls though and these are merely our opinion. Luncheon in the restaurant was average and pricy. We decided not to dine in the restaurant again. When we were rushed by travel agency’s driver while having breakfast, I requested maître d' to pack our untouched food so that it was not wasted. He refused and his colleague noted that it was “a lot of food that could not be packed”. We are not big eaters and it was just breakfast. Even a plastic bag could do well. And once we were stranded in the lift for 15 minutes due to technical failure. When emergency button did not work we had to shout and beat the door for help until we got noticed. A working emergency button would be just great in a lift which is not monitored and is located at a corner of the resort.
Almost forgot this, we got discount rates for our stay..true value per se. We came here with dollars in wallet, thus feel good factor, only to discover that Phuket is no cheaper than our state. Yet we have good time and a holiday to cherish. And Karon Phunaka resort has a big contribution to that.

Dear Rabboo, We appreciate your review of Karon Phunaka and that you liked our Deluxe room with Jacuzzi on the terrace and that you liked the blue Andaman Sea view visible clearly from your private terrace. And as you said the swimming is a must to visit for Sea View lover and really nice that you were among them. Glad to hear that our team took good care of you and that you had good holiday overall. And we are very sorry that our restaurant service did not live up to your expectations, also the short failure of our outdoor glass elevator which was not a norm of our operation. My team and I have reviewed your points to see what we can do to fix or improve the areas you mentioned. I understand your point that you felt there was not a good reason to refuse to unpack your breakfast. Please apologize for this. Normally we have packed breakfast box service which guest can order in advance so that we can well pack and store various kinds of food to suit your need. An urgent request may delay your time if you are on departure of a trip and may cause improper food pack which is not a norm that we do. A breakfast box pre-order is recommended in case that you may have to join a trip early morning. And we are very sorry for the short failure of our lift operation. We do maintenance it regularly; somehow unusual rain caused a problem. Our reception located on the lower area of the resort, it may take some times for them to reach the lift. Anyhow, as it is glass- outdoor- lift, escalating on the double iron tracks located on the ground open air area, passengers will be able to see surrounding outside and can be taken out in very short time comparing to lifts used in buildings which would be more complicated to help passengers out in case of technical failure. Anyhow, it was not what we expected to happen, our apologies for this. Yours sincerely, On behalf of Karon Phunaka management and staffs Pasara Puthamat Executive Secretary Karon Phunaka Resort & Spa

Date of Stay: July 2012
Room Type: Deluxe Room

Hotel Phunaka is located away from the street that run along the Karon Beach. It is located quiet some distance off a more "inland" street, which is also rather populated by restaurants and Marts. Guest will have to take a rather long walk (approx 10 min out) from the hotel, which is located on a hill, to the inland street. It'll take a good 15 mins to reach the Karon Beach.
However, the hotel offers one way shutle down to Karon Beach on a half hourly basis up till 1500 local time. Going back will have to be by Tuk-tuk, taxi, or walking.

Good:
Great Views - You'll see the sea, the Karon area and Kata from far. Saw fireworks at night in Kata, the view was amazing at night or in the day.
Friendly Staff - Staff is always friendly, especially so for the security guard. Always rendering help when I park my motorcycle within the premises of the hotel.
Breakfast - Decent spread, and the person manning the egg station was great and friendly.
Pool - Great pool with great views... a relaxing dip especially after a hot tan at the beach
Jacuzzi - Jacuzzi at your own balcony.. how convienent can it be? Great views to go along with it too.

Not-so-Good
Distance to the beach and the main road - It's quite a distance, especially under the sun
Bed - a little too hard compared to my previous hotel @ kata
Little and not so little creepy crawlers - Saw a couple of bugs in my balcony and a rather big spider (Fist-size) just by my bed on my 2nd night

Overall-
It's quite a nice experience, would recommend it to friends. Obviously a great choice for view lovers, and friendly staff are always there to help (help with fixing the jacuzzi and clear the spider away)

Tip:
If you're as lazy as I am... you can rent a motorbike just outside the hotel. However, be warned that it's going to cost double the price you are going to get out at the main street. But, that said, it's just approx US 12 dollars a day with gas. It does saves you time going out and back to the main street, the beach, or even a ride to Kata or Patong.

Dear wsinsw, Thank you very much for your review of your stay with us. I believe it’s truly useful for other customers. And please apologize that I reply your review quite late. After we received your comment about the spider, we seriously sought for more. And to be honest, we found another one in our resort after you checked out. According to our study, the big spider that you found in our resort can also be found throughout Africa, large parts of Asia and all over Australia. In Europe, there are some species in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, and in Cyprus. The sizes range from as small as a fingernail to as big as a dinner plate. Depending on the species, the body length of them ranges from 2.5 to 10 centimetres (1 to 4 in), with 8–30-centimetre (3–12 in) leg spans Anyhow, most of them are harmless to humans, and some species are popular in the exotic pet trade. It’s also very popular meal in our neighbor country; Cambodia in Kampong Cham. CNN reported about this before. Up until now, it’s been 4 months since we found the couple of the spiders. And we never find any of them again. We believe that they were a new couple, just moved in our resort area before your stay. Now we’re sure that there were only 2 of them and we had moved them to live in appropriate place far away from our resort. Once again, thank you very much for your comment. We arrival around 02:00 am and the staff told us we have 2 king size room and 1 twin bed, but when we go to the room only 1 king size and 2 twin bed, I don't know why the staff not check room type first, but we understand for request not guarantee and is very late time and we offer today change to king size room. The staff said is ok, can go to reception in the morning to change and come back hotel to get key. Now the staff told us cannot change, if need change must talk with agoda, for agoda they not guarantee request and only have few agent they confirm request, Have another room type is available but must pay upgrade fee and for this booking room type have available time on 1st of May. My friend stay here 5 night and 3 room, only can give us king size one more room on 01/05 and stay 2 night will C/O. The staff not friendly and speak very strong, looks like very angry for our request( I told to staff by phone, but my friend infront them, he said staff looks like hate them and not take care them). My friend comes here for holiday with his family, but for this small request cannot help them and attitude is bad.

Dear Welling X. Thank you very much for your review. It was forward to all departments in order to improve our service and to prevent such a disappointing for both sides misunderstanding in future. First night in the hotel and already had a terrible experience. Simply tried to ask fork and spoon from the room service and was told in broken English "one fork one spoon 100 baht". When asked if it was merely deposit, the question was repeated "one fork one spoon 100 baht ok". When asked if we could be referred to someone who speak English, the wait staff proceeded to joke over the phone with her colleague in Thai - presumably on how we 'didn't understand' her English.

Will never repeat stay. Will never recommend to anyone ever.

And btw, once the lift novelty ended - it became a hassle. It moves freaking slow

Dear Rudytan2000 It's a pleasure to see your review to have a chance to improve our service. It's been a lot of changes over passed year. We must say that it is absolutely true that a 4 star hotel must have staff who can speak proper English. That is why nowadays our hotel has very well speaking Guests Relation Agents who can assist you in every way. The Restaurant policy also went through some changes. You're welcome to see our improved Resort the next time you visit Phuket Island. Best wishes, Hotel Management.

We went for a 5 day stay at this lovely hotel. We were a bit nervous having never been to Thailand but were so pleasantly surprised! The food in the restaurant was consistently outstanding. We went out twice and found it to be nowehere near as nice and that the prices were the same. The pool has amazing views. The staff are sooooo helpful (we didn't find everyone in Thailand that helpful and pleasant but rather out to get as much money as possible but the hotel wasn't like that at all). The hotel rooms are big and comfortable and have everything you need, incluing very lovely squashy slippers and dressing gowns. The walks around the hotel are steep but we managed fine with a 2 year old and a 6 year old, you jut have to be vigilant near the big slopes but our girls coped fine. Go on a trip to phi phi island, it is completely amazing. The elephants are ok dpending on where you go but beware of companies that offer monkey shows etc as they are horrible! We would go again.
