The Hotel Aguas Claras was recommended to us by the Tierra Verde staff and is really extraordinary. We got the bungalow Cacao, which has a closed bedroom with air conditioning and an open living area, where the mosquitoes also feel good. The door works with a magnetic lock, which is why you always have to carry your room card with you. The beach is a few minutes walk past private houses. The hotel has loungers and towels on the beautiful sandy beach. Guests are also provided with drinks from the hotel's beach restaurant. Very relaxing. The water is pleasantly warm. However, the solid ground falls slowly and irregularly and soon becomes rocky. I am afraid of sea urchins because we didn’t take bathing shoes with us.But nothing happend.

Dear SweetMarie, thank you for your visit to Aguas Claras. We are happy to hear that you found our little Caribbean beach hotel "extraordinary" and enjoyed the Cacao Bungalow. Since the opening of our DaLime Beachfront Restaurant a couple of months ago, the beach experience for our guests totally changed and now you have food and drinks available right at the beach. We hope to have you back with us again real soon. All the best from the team at Aguas Claras.

The hotel is an architectural jewel, full of details. Lush gardens surround the property which is steps away from the beach. Wereserved a Pavlova Suite. The bed was comfortable, amazing décor and the outdoor shower was a pleasure. i would have add body lotion to the ammenities, and maybe a pitcher with cold water. The hotel does not use plastic and all the walter is filtered.
Dinier, our server, was great. He showed me around and we could even see up close some sloths. Breakfast was a la carte but it was beautifully served, nice portions and fresh ingredients. We also had lunch and the I ordered a salad with a delicious passion fruit dressing. I almost cried when I left the hotel. It is really a jewel and can't wait to go back again.

Regarding Covid19, although the Puerto Viejo are has very few cases, the whole staff wore mask. Alcohol was available everywhere, and your temperature was checked at your arrival.

Hotel Aguas Claras is a lovely spot for those looking to take it easy and enjoy the beach. We stayed in the Pavlova Suites (spelled "Sweets" on the sign), but there are also cottages available as well. The rooms in the Suites are quite soundproof, but if you're a light sleeper, don't stay in the Chiquita Room, as you can still hear loud road noise. Fabulous toiletries like soap and conditioner are provided, but if you don't like showering outside, this may not be the place for you (don't worry, the showers are still VERY private, they're just outside). The small things count, too, from the bath robes to the canteens to the bag specifically for toting things to the beach.

The restaurant on-site, Papaya, is pretty nice. Christmas dinner was a tad pricy for the amount and quality of food, but the other options on the menu are very good. For cheaper prices, consider heading into town.

The hotel also offers many activities, and working with them was a breeze. Overall, a five star experience.

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Costa Rica, the second of which was spent at Aguas Claras. We honestly had the most wonderful time. I was travelling with my husband and two daughters (11 & 9). We arrived after a fairly full on week of travel and adventure, so this was our relaxing part of the holiday. We were staying in a little house called Magnolia, which quickly felt like home. We had been warned by our travel agent that the hotel don't like children under 7 staying in these cottages separate from the main bit of the hotel. There room was one metre from ours so I can understand this but I would have had no problem staying here had my children been younger.
The hotel is on the main road so I was sceptical about road noise but once inside it was barely noticeable. Our rooms were perfect. Honestly the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in and the most amazing showers with delicious shampoos and conditioners. Plenty of space to unpack and a little outside seating area and shower too.
Everyone was so friendly and helpful and made us feel so welcome and at home. The beach is reached via a lovely private path and although quite wavy, most days my children loved body boarding and swimming. The food was fantastic and catered to everyone's taste. Definitely more expensive (Costa Rica in general was far more expensive than we anticipated) than most of the other places we ate at but very good and the hotel were more than helpful when it came to organising transport or reservations when we wanted to eat elsewhere.

My husband and I recently stayed here and have mixed feelings about this place. Starting with the good - the design is truly amazing. It is very apparent that an artist owns this place, because every design detail has been thoughtfully considered. We took photographs of every piece of furniture in the hopes that we could find them stateside. The beach area was also very lovely, and it was nice to feel like we had a private piece of beach while we were in Puerto Viejo. And, we’d be remiss not to give a shout out to Daniella (at the front desk) who was extremely nice and helpful during our stay. We probably asked her 100 questions and she was so kind and patient with us. And, this hotel is doing a lot in terms of sustainability and giving back to the local community which is great!

The not so good for us boiled down to service. While everyone was quite warm and friendly, the service/properties/amenities do not reflect a “5 star luxury hotel” as described on the website. At the restaurant, for example, the servers rarely (if ever) checked on us or asked.."How is everything? Can I get you something else?” I understand that the vibe is supposed to be chill and understated, but it’s just not “5 star.”

At one point it was raining so my husband and I went to the restaurant to sit under the shelter and read. Not one employee asked us if we’d like anything to drink or eat. Don’t they want to make money?? And, as other reviewers have mentioned, the yoga classes are misrepresented on the website. The Wellness menu online clearly states there is “free daily complementary yoga”. However, when we arrived, the staff informed us that it was only complementary on Saturdays and that any other day, it would cost a whopping $80-$100.

In summary, this place was cute and had some nice things to offer. But we probably wouldn’t revisit again any time soon. The service and amenities not where they should be for the price point and the impression one gets from their website. All in all, a good visit but not exceptional/5 star.

Dear Hannah, thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review of your stay with us. We appreciate all the positive feedback and will share your nice comments with Daniela. But even more importantly, we also appreciate you pointing out mistakes and opportunities to improve. While negative feedback always hurts a bit to receive, it will make us better. Please be assured that we are already working on a plan to improve. We are very sorry about the wrong information in the wellness manual and are currently correcting this information on the website. Your feedback on our restaurant service is very appreciated and we are taking measures. "Chill" is no excuse for poor service. We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations. We hope you will reconsider and come back soon to see the improvements for yourself. Thanks again and all the best from us here in Puerto Viejo. Saludos.

We had the best time at Hotel Aguas Claras! The staff was so amazing, especially Ariat at the bar and Steven at the restaurant. Ariat was so warm and friendly to us and especially our teenage boys. She brought us water with sliced fruit by the pool in the afternoon and always wanted to hear all about our adventures. She answered tons of questions about the history and culture of the area. Thank you Ariat!!

Steven was so great at the restaurant. When we had early morning activities he would take our breakfast order and have it ready and waiting for us at the right moment. He was so supportive and kind. He set up lights for us when we wanted to play cards and there wasn't enough lighting.

Our room, the Coral casita, was absolutely fabulous. My husband and I had our own room and our boys had single beds in the next room. The shower was beautiful, screened in so you feel in touch with nature but still totally inside/private. The bikes to borrow were great, the food was absolutely delicious and the entire staff was so helpful and kind.

Our only complaint was the music at the restaurant. We were in Costa Rica! We wanted to hear local, lively music. Instead they played cheesy elevator music. We would beg them to change it and sometimes they would, it depended who was there. Whomever is deciding not to play local music is ruining the restaurant vibe!

Lastly, the area is really fantastic. Cauhuita is incredible, kayaking in the mangroves is so special, exploring Puerto Viejo is so fun... We were totally entertained for a week.

The rooms were special, especially the bungalows--rarely do you find a hotel in the middle of the rainforest, with the sounds of the jungle all around you (yes, you will will hear howler monkeys morning and evening). The staff were all very caring and focused on giving the best service possible. This hotel met my needs to explore (a visit to the Bribri people was a highlight of the entire vacation) and my sons' desire for a relaxing getaway where they could just hang out on the beach.

Thank you for your visit to Aguas Claras. For many of our guests, it is their first visit to the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. And many tell us, just like you, that it really exceeded their expectations. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the bungalows and your trip to visit the native Bribri. And of course, hanging out at Playa Chiquita with the calm and warm waters this time of the year is a wonderful experience. Please come back soon.

Great service and cute hotel! The hotel is very cute and the location was great. If I would have to complain it would be about the cleaning, it was not so well made everyday, it seems like the cleaning people were on a rush to take care of the details, but it was just about that little details and not everyday. We were very happy to stay with you and would definitely go back!

We stayed here for 6 nights in the Hibiscus sweets... Deliberate play on words. Staff here are the jewel in the crown.
Nothing was too much trouble.
Clean comfortable and attentive.
Things to note : we were on a Bed and breakfast basis but it was not clear until day 3 that there were restrictions on breakfast options...
Food and drink was expensive at the hotel.
The offer of yoga and massage is available at the hotel but also expensive..$90 per couple yoga and 210 for couples massage.
Beach area is very small and mostly shrouded by vegetation which is beautiful but made it difficult to sit if there were more than 10 people.
The pool area also very small.
Wise to use Coccles beach but no access to loungers.
The hotel provided a whats app service to minimise footfall for enquiries and it was extremely good.
We would stay here again if in Costa Rics

My wife and I spent 2.5 days at Hotel Aguas Claras, and wish we could have spent more. The Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful in a handful of interactions. The ease for checking in and checking out was smooth and effortless for a couple that spoke very minimal Spanish.

We did not get time to walk around Puerto Viejo town, but it was busy and vibrant and appeared to be safe and friendly for tourists from all corners of the world. The amenities and facilities at the hotel itself were first class. From the one of a kind room, to the Beach Club in the rainforest along with beach side service everything we experienced here was wonderful! But nothing compared to the food we feasted on while here. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus were fully of several options for all sorts of preferences. And the quality and taste of each meal we order was absolutely perfect! I would only recommend bringing a pair of stretchy pants for your trip home after indulging on all the wonderful meals Hotel Aguas prepares.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to make a trip to Costa Rica and try something different than the friendly confines you find on the Pacific coast of the country.

Yes, the property is gated. But it is done in a subtle way so it does not kill the relaxed and low key vibe. Let us know if you have any other questions.
