I absolutely LOVED this hotel. Every single detail from welcome beverage to art to comfy beds was wonderful. The environment was relaxing and bohemian but with 5-star service. I wish I could visit every room to look at the unique decor of each one. The beach associated with the hotel was pristine with clear calm waters and even some decent snorkeling just a little ways out. On site, we saw a sloth, a mama and baby bat, agoutis, and howler monkeys….not to mention several birds: green macaws, green parrots, oropendulas, and wood-rails. We couldn’t sleep in with the racket from all these animals but we didn’t mind one bit! We were celebrating my husband’s birthday and the team was awesome at helping with a surprise gift and a truly delightful private beach dinner. Hope to be back some day!

Hotel's Favorite
This place has some charming bungalows with air conditioning(needed here in this very humid place!) This hotel is part of the Cayuga collection of small , ecologically responsible dwellings; Wonderful staff----very good food! Nice pool and grounds that are within the larger forest; We were there for my wifes birthday and they helped out a ton to make it a special day-- they set up a massage on the beach in the day and in the eve, we were able to rent out the outdoor spa and have a special private dinner- just the two of us. Luis and Allan were of great help at all times at the front desk; We were able to get an on site cooking class as well---fun and very healing trip!

Lovely staff & amazing beach, dogs are really nice & the food is exceptional. The shop is really great which is only a five minute walk from the hostel. The room is great, and the air con is very cold.

We spent a week at Aguas Claras for our honeymoon and it was great! The service was impecable (Steven, Donald, William and Miguel were fantastic servers/bartenders and just all-around great guys!) and the tours the conferiré booked for us were amazing! Every meal we ate, in either restaurant, was delicious and the cocktails were perfectly mixed - I highly recommend the refreshing, homemade pina colada’s! The hotel even provided a nightly homemade dessert hand-delivered delivered to the room, which was a great little treat. The rooms themselves were simple but luxurious and I honestly think we spent more time on the patio than we did in the room itself. Between the comfortable day bed and the constant flow of wildlife to watch, (birds, monkeys, macaws, agoutis, hummingbirds, etc) it was a beautiful spot to sit out and enjoy the day. The cabana/casitas are spread out a bit and with the foliage in between, you feel like you’re in your own little oasis! The shower is spacious and the toiletries provided smell fantastic, and the constant fresh towels are a nice bonus! The hotel offered a complimentary drying service, which was a nice touch, but we never ended up needing it. There were a few parts that were a bit disappointing though. Namely for a 5 Star, luxury resort, we still felt a bit nickle and dimed with a lot of the extra fees, even just for minibar basics. Also, when we were packing for the trip, I asked if the hotel provided all needed beach items, specifically asking about towels, chairs and umbrellas. The hotel confirmed these three things so we didn’t bring out own but when we arrived, we learned that umbrellas are not provided. As a fairly pale couple, I would’ve gladly brought my own beach umbrella has I known. Finally, and a bit nit-picky, but the doors to the cabanas are strangely difficult, needing a key to both enter or exit, and automatically locking immediately after use. Because of this, we ended up leaving the doors open if we were hanging around. It would have been really nice to have some kind of screen door so we could leave the door propped but not have to worry about any “visitors.” Overall though we highly enjoyed our stay!

Thank you Mary Claire for taking the time to write such a detailed review. We really appreciate your constructive feedback. Thanks for all the praise on the staff, food, service, room and amenities. We agree that in the Caribbean, the place to be is the porch. This is where it all happens. We will review your feedback on the minibar charges and the beach amenities as well as the doors and find ways to improve this experience for future guests. Thanks again and we hope to see you again soon.

The surroundings are magical. I have upmost respect for all the staffs here. Hotel management themselves should put more focus on service as staffs are always there, I hardly came across anyone from upper management. Great place.

We stayed here for 10 nights in March. The staff are super friendly here and will do anything to make you comfortable but the icing on the cake for me is the surroundings and the wildlife. On arrival, we were being shown to the hibiscus suite and there was a sloth on the tree right in front of us, so close. We spent some time out on the borrowed banana bikes, did some shopping at the local store and went kayaking, but when resting on the small beach (or pool) you can while away your time spotting the wildlife. While at Aguas Claras, as well as sloths, I saw macaw’s, leaf cutter ants, agoutis, squirrels, lizards, butterflies and birds. The room was comfortable, airy and spacious. (No TV if you feel like you need one). There were vegan options for meals but not many so I did tend to have the same breakfast every day then eat out for lunch and dinner. There are quite a few bars and restaurants within walking/biking distance and plenty to do in the area. A thumbs up from me.

Dear London Beachbum (love that alias), thanks for this great review. Besides seeing the sloths that are very common in the area where our hotel is located, we are happy to hear that you had an active, yet relaxing vacation with us. Thanks for the feedback on adding more vegan options to the menu. We will work on this, but always feel free to ask us to prepare something special if you have certain dietary restrictions. We hope you come back soon to Aguas Claras or any of the other Cayuga Collection Hotels and Lodges in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama. See you soon.

This hotel is one of my absolute favorite places I’ve ever stayed. The hotel is set close to the beach with the most beautiful grounds and buildings. The decor is to die for. We stayed in the Kua Kua bungalow and loved the outdoor shower. Not only is the hotel nice but the staff is also fantastic. They are super helpful above and beyond! Luis was so friendly and knew so much about the local wildlife, he even took us out looking for frogs. Private yoga session and massage were also a highlight. Would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Puerto Viejo. Also the complimentary breakfast is absolutely delicious!

Response from Hans Pfister, General Manager at Hotel Aguas Claras
Responded May 17, 2022
Thank you for this wonderful review. We are very honored to be one of your favorite places that you have ever stayed at. Thanks for noticing how special the decor is. The owner of the hotel and her daughter are both artists and a lot of thought and detail go into everything that you see. But as you point out, it is nothing if service, food, and amenities are not up to standard and we work hard to train our young local team members (one of them is Luis) to provide that experience. Please come back soon.

We spent several days at Aguas Claras, and we were so sad to have to leave, we could have stayed busy exploring the beaches and nearby wildlife reserves for many more days! The entire staff were so kind, and pampered us continuously. The food at both restaurants were excellent, focused on locally sourced fruit, vegetables, and fresh seafood. We recommend the fish tacos with local mahi mahi - it was a favorite offering from the Papayas Restaurant. The dining options at Da Lime on the beach was more casual, but just as high quality and flavorful as Papayas. The hamburger with grilled pineapple was the best lunch at the beach we ever had, and again, the staff at the beach restaurant were so attentive they knew we were always on the lookout for the wildlife, so when a sloth showed up one day sleeping in a tree above the beach restaurant, the nice woman server immediately pointed it out to us. We stayed in the KuaKua bungalow, which was completely private, and yet centrally located in the heart of the complex, a few steps from the Papayas Restaurant and pool. The bungalow had everything we needed, and we really appreciated the homey touches that the staff gave us every day. They knew I was celebrating a birthday, and gave me a lovely welcome gift of freshly baked chocolate cake when we first arrived. Each day afterwards, another little delicious baked good would magically be delivered to our bungalow: one evening it was churros still warm from the kitchen. In the bar fridge, we appreciated the bottle of chilled water they provided, which we refilled every night (the drinking water from the tap was perfectly safe and refreshing). One spectacular aspect of our bungalow was the magnificent outdoor shower! Besides providing towels the staff also provided towels to bring to the beach, and there were additional towels at the pool always available for the guests to take as needed. The hotel happily lends their guests bikes (complete with locks and baskets) so we could explore Puerto Viejo and that was so much fun! A very short bike ride away (just a few minutes) are large, modern grocery stores that sell everything from booze, Gatorade, freshly baked bread, fresh fruit, etc. next to a pharmacy. Beyond that is the town of Puerto Viejo with many dining options and shops, bike rentals, and bars. The beach at Aguas Claras is gorgeous and a very short walk (my guess 100-200 meters) from our bungalow. And the walk to the beach, on meandering pathways through the complex is glorious - the trees, bushes, flowers, that fill the garden is home to an amazing number of wildlife species - each day we saw howler monkeys, hummingbirds, aguti and so many other birds we couldn't keep track! There is a special vibe at this hotel. It is all about slowing down, taking time to meander the winding paths through the garden, enjoy life and really experience Pura Vida.

This hotel was so incredibly wonderful it is hard to even know where to start this review! The location is amazing, a perfect midpoint between delicious restaurants and beautiful beaches. There is also a very nice beachfront club as well where you can enjoy exquisite meals and drinks. Inside the hotel grounds, you can find very diverse wildlife and have a complete rainforest experience without having to leave the property, also accompanied by the most comfortable and luxurious facilities. I stayed in a bungalow called 'Biriba' for the first two nights of our stay and I can say it is the perfect way to enjoy luxury combined with a full wildlife ambiance. The bungalow is fully equipped with air conditioning, two little social areas with comfortable chairs and a table, a minibar with delicious goods, coffee, and everything you need for a nice snack time! The bathroom has a spa-like vibe to it, with super comfy bathrobes, soft towels, and honestly the most relaxing shower experience. The shampoo, conditioner, and soaps have the most delicious scents! On the last night of our stay, we were asked if we wanted to change rooms to a Pavlova suite for a different but equally wonderful experience. These rooms are also the perfect balance of nature and luxury and contain all the above-mentioned perks as well that make your stay spectacular! No matter which room you stay in, guaranteed you will have the most wonderful time! Also, the food is SPECTACULAR! You could savor each ingredient within each bite, so much flavor and noticeably made with so much care! The menu also offers gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options for any specific requests. I would say one of the most impressive aspects of this hotel is the sustainability efforts put into it. Behind the luxurious experience, each detail of nature conservation has been taken into account. The wildlife is preserved perfectly, the food is local and there is plenty of information to create awareness regarding the conservation of natural resources. Applause for this! The staff is absolutely incredible!! They make ALL the difference! From the moment you step into the hotel the attention that is provided and the kindness that is given is so heartwarming you already feel at home! They are super welcoming and no matter what your request is they will make their absolute best effort in making it come true! I had a romantic getaway with my partner and they organized a special surprise meal for us that blew us away! The hotel also offers many activities and the staff makes them even more special! The details, the attention, and the customer service are top-notch! Best people I have met! As you can see I cannot stop talking about how AMAZING this experience was, I 100% recommend it and of course, I will definitely be visiting Hotel Aguas Claras in the future! Saying goodbye was so hard but the experience was so fulfilling I left with the largest smile!
