We had a wonderful break following 5 days hiking in Ardeche. Bedrooms are confortable, and the breakfast as we expected. Team cared on respecting covid19 precautions. Perfect welcoming from the whole Bastide's team. The break we've dreamed about !
The setting, poised above a valley, and the old stone building, could hardly be more impressive. The two terraces, one for the bar and one for the restaurant, are magnificent. But once inside things aren't so good. We arrived at 7 pm to find the reception had closed at 6! Our room key was in an envelope but it wasn't the warm welcome we'd expected. We saw a waitress at supper but otherwise saw no-one from the staff for the first 24 hours. And the bar didn't open till 6 pm - not ideal when we got back from a long walk at 5 pm desperate for a beer. The receptionist got us two as a special deal but couldn't provide the other things off the bar menu. Staff were friendly when we saw them, it just wasn't enough. The room was large with splendid views but very plain: fake wood laminated flooring, no rugs, mainly bare white walls. Every thing worked: shower, toilet, wifi. Beds were comfy. It was just the decor that disappointed us. The dining room was pretty grim too - it was too cold for the terrace. The food looked good but didn't taste of much. We weren't surprised when the chef didn't come out at the end of the meal to hear if we'd liked it. The food is much better at The Auberge de la Tour de Brison just a 5 minute drive away. To summarise, this hotel could be really great; but at the moment its soul is missing. …
La Bastide de Sanilhac is an out-of-the-way comfortable place to stay in an area surrounded by numerous places to hike, bike, swim, canoe, cave, etc. as well as to visit a few of the plus beaux villages of France. It is truly tucked away on a hill like the ancient bastides generally were and so this hotel can be somewhat hard to find; one eventually drives along a narrow one lane road to get here, following signs for the place. One should plan on arriving after 4PM because management takes a 12-4 break and nobody is around to check you in; they are missing a beat not having at least the bar open for afternoon custom. There is a pool, a short hike up above the building complex. Our room was spacious, clean and neat, comfortable bed, great shower with good hot water and pressure, an efficient air conditioning unit. The bar is understaffed and slow but the restaurant is well run and the food well prepared with a decent wine list; it is worth eating here for dinner as it is a long slow slog anywhere else and unlikely to be nearly as nice. Service is a bit understaffed at times, almost as if the hotel were being run more as a hobby than a business. But other than that, very highly recommended for a stay in the Ardeche countryside.…
The hotel is very nice. There is a Swimming pool and you can do many excursions like canoying etc. You have got a really great view from one of the terraces and the swimming pool. The owners as well as the staff are very friendly.
Family run business, the owner could have not been more charming and welcoming. The Bastide itself was presented beautifully and the room was bright and airy and beautifully clean - we were also fortunate enough to have a room on the side overlooking the valley towards the old village of Sanilhac. We also had dinner there (we were only there for one night on our way south) on the beautiful terrace. The food was utterly delicious (including the lovely little amuse bouche) - we chose the Ardèche influence courses. We will definitely return as we just loved the place.... especially Elvis, the family terrier - definitely keep an eye for him, he’s gorgeous!!
Well worth the visit to this area of France, especially to visit and kayak in the Ardeche Gourge, and if you do, then a stay in La Bastide de Sanilhac is highly recommended. Very nice rooms, great food and friendly service. The views and surroundings are spectacular and reminiscent of being in Tuscany.
One of my pet peeves is when I book a room for two and there is only one suitcase rack. Le Bastide de Sanilhac had 2. This is just one example of the level of attention to detail to make your stay special. Warm welcome, inviting pool, pretty lounge/bar area, a delicious dinner on the deck, great breakfast, what else can you ask for? Well, we got excellent advice for a lovely hike.
Stayed here 1 night on way to 2 weeks holidays in Ardèche/Drôme. Extremely friendly welcome from owner who showed us to our rooms. The rooms were simple modern and very clean. The bastide is a beautiful set of buildings perched high on a hillside with amazing views. There is a lively terrace where drinks from the bar can be enjoyed. The owners son runs the bar extremely efficiently and is also very friendly. The only disappointment - we couldn't eat at the restaurant as they told us they were too busy and that there would have been long periods of waiting - no good for us with 3 kids under 10. We ended up eating sandwichs from the bar. My advice is to book resto in advance.
This is the nicest location I've been in Ardèche! It's a bit difficult to find, but once you've seen the arrows that the owner has put up even far away you can't go much wrong. Upon arrival it's obvious that the place is welcoming... tables with lounge chairs are plenty, and the large building is well kept. Reception is very friendly and with a streak of humour. The owner aims to please. Rooms are sober but comfortable and the bathroom and separate toilet are very clean. And the bed is spacious, not like other hotels in France. Breakfast is a joy! I think more than some of the weight I've gained originates here; anyway it was good enough to go far in the day without food ;-) We've had dinner once in the hotel (in a short 4 night stay) and this was a very good experience as well! So overall this is a hotel that I can recommend without hesitation!…
We stayed very last minute ... the hotel was a bit out of the way but very well sign posted so no trouble to find. The building was amazing ! The family run business was of the highest standard. From the helpful reception, the service and surroundings of the bar. There was a wonderful terrace but sadly the weather was too cold to sit outside for the evening meal or breakfast. Our room was basic but large with a very comfortable bed. The hotel and restaurant are very well priced and we hope to return when the weather is a little warmer to fully appreciate the outside pool which looked fantastic.
