We had a wonderful break following 5 days hiking in Ardeche.
Bedrooms are confortable, and the breakfast as we expected.
Team cared on respecting covid19 precautions.
Perfect welcoming from the whole Bastide's team.

The setting, poised above a valley, and the old stone building, could hardly be more impressive. The two terraces, one for the bar and one for the restaurant, are magnificent. But once inside things aren't so good.
We arrived at 7 pm to find the reception had closed at 6! Our room key was in an envelope but it wasn't the warm welcome we'd expected. We saw a waitress at supper but otherwise saw no-one from the staff for the first 24 hours. And the bar didn't open till 6 pm - not ideal when we got back from a long walk at 5 pm desperate for a beer. The receptionist got us two as a special deal but couldn't provide the other things off the bar menu. Staff were friendly when we saw them, it just wasn't enough.
The room was large with splendid views but very plain: fake wood laminated flooring, no rugs, mainly bare white walls. Every thing worked: shower, toilet, wifi. Beds were comfy. It was just the decor that disappointed us. The dining room was pretty grim too - it was too cold for the terrace. The food looked good but didn't taste of much. We weren't surprised when the chef didn't come out at the end of the meal to hear if we'd liked it. The food is much better at The Auberge de la Tour de Brison just a 5 minute drive away.
To summarise, this hotel could be really great; but at the moment its soul is missing.

Romantic and quiet hotel with beautiful view. Nice terrace to enjoy the beautiful landscape while eating. Only the menu choice is very limited (we were there for 2 weeks and had to choose between the same 5 meals every single evening (3 with fish, one with duck, one with chicken...). A bit more variety would be nice!
For families with babies or very small children: you have to carry them up the hill to get to the pool.

We stayed very last minute ... the hotel was a bit out of the way but very well sign posted so no trouble to find. The building was amazing ! The family run business was of the highest standard. From the helpful reception, the service and surroundings of the bar. There was a wonderful terrace but sadly the weather was too cold to sit outside for the evening meal or breakfast. Our room was basic but large with a very comfortable bed.
The hotel and restaurant are very well priced and we hope to return when the weather is a little warmer to fully appreciate the outside pool which looked fantastic.

Great view, but unfortunately we did not have this view from our "updated"-superior room. Also some rooms only have small loft windows. Very nice staff, could not have been better!! Friendly and did everything for us!. Breakfast, could have some more cheese and ham. Very french. But beatiful terasse to enjoy the breakfast. Nice pool. Nice bar. But could be nice to have somwhere to sit without buying from the bar. Dinner was nice, maybee a little "strange" children menu with only typical french vegitables as an entree. Very quite, and perfect to take daytrips around

We stay 3 nights at that place. it is in the middle of nowhere, really hard to find without Google Maps on your phone.. Amazing view! Amazing owners.. but one thing really disappoint us. . At that remote place you can not drink your own bottle of wine, you can not eat the fruits you bought on the road .. there is no place for it. All available tables belong to the bar and you have to order drinks / food there ..
We would highly recommend to the owner to do some area where guests can enjoy their own wine / snacks, not always to use the restaurant....

La Bastide de Sanilhac is an out-of-the-way comfortable place to stay in an area surrounded by numerous places to hike, bike, swim, canoe, cave, etc. as well as to visit a few of the plus beaux villages of France. It is truly tucked away on a hill like the ancient bastides generally were and so this hotel can be somewhat hard to find; one eventually drives along a narrow one lane road to get here, following signs for the place. One should plan on arriving after 4PM because management takes a 12-4 break and nobody is around to check you in; they are missing a beat not having at least the bar open for afternoon custom. There is a pool, a short hike up above the building complex. Our room was spacious, clean and neat, comfortable bed, great shower with good hot water and pressure, an efficient air conditioning unit. The bar is understaffed and slow but the restaurant is well run and the food well prepared with a decent wine list; it is worth eating here for dinner as it is a long slow slog anywhere else and unlikely to be nearly as nice. Service is a bit understaffed at times, almost as if the hotel were being run more as a hobby than a business. But other than that, very highly recommended for a stay in the Ardeche countryside.

Family run business, the owner could have not been more charming and welcoming.
The Bastide itself was presented beautifully and the room was bright and airy and beautifully clean - we were also fortunate enough to have a room on the side overlooking the valley towards the old village of Sanilhac.
We also had dinner there (we were only there for one night on our way south) on the beautiful terrace. The food was utterly delicious (including the lovely little amuse bouche) - we chose the Ardèche influence courses.
We will definitely return as we just loved the place.... especially Elvis, the family terrier - definitely keep an eye for him, he’s gorgeous!!

Well worth the visit to this area of France, especially to visit and kayak in the Ardeche Gourge, and if you do, then a stay in La Bastide de Sanilhac is highly recommended. Very nice rooms, great food and friendly service. The views and surroundings are spectacular and reminiscent of being in Tuscany.
