WOW. This chateau was by far the best part of our 3 week vacation. The chateau is huge (80,000 square feet) and absolutely beautiful. Currently they have 4 rooms, but will be finishing more in the near future. We stayed in the tower suite (150E breakfast included).
Room: The room was one of the nicest rooms we have had anywhere. It had a seperate toilet room, seperate sink room, and seperate shower room. As well, it had a nice sitting room with a table and chair for breakfast, and a coach. The bedroom was in the tower, and had a large 4 poster bed, and great furnishings.
Food: The breakfast was great, and was served in the room. We also had dinner at the chateau. Being the only guests for the night, they were cooking just for us. There is no menu, you get what they cook, but it was our best dinner in France and would highly recommend. We sat in a room just off the dining room, nice music, candle lit dinner, and a crazy bat flying around the room. Very romantic.
Service : Cythnia, the owner, was fantastic !!! As well, the caretaker was very, very friendly. She speaks very little english, but took amazing care of us.
The chateau: WOW, this place is amazing. My girlfriend felt like she was a princess !!! It's huge, mostly uncompleted but the rooms that are done, are very nicely decorated. If you are in the area, you MUST stay here. They also do weddings here.

The chateau was MAGNIFICENT. This was the best place that we have stayed in the entire world. The atmosphere was relaxing, food was excellent, and the host was the BEST!

This chateau was originally built by one of the Roche heirs as a hunting lodge so it also has stuffed real animals to recreate that part of its history.

We could not believe the carved wood, antiques, furnishings, painted and carved ceilings, staircase and chapel complete with stained glass windows. The grounds are beautiful---flower beds and gardens (with herbs) in bloom.

Our suite was unbelievable. It contained the most incredible bathroom that I have ever seen. The bedroom had an adjoining dining area, too. We were able to completely relax. In the morning, the sun beamed into our suite. From our windows we could view the Memorial Tower, and smell the flower and herb gardens. In the evenings, we enjoyed salmon, vegetables, cheeses and wines as we viewed the pond with swans and ducks before we enjoyed dinners.

The chateau also has a library in one of its turrets with built in wood carved shelves, and circular glass, complete with antique books. There are several pictures of the chateau representing its history.

The host accomodated our every wish, not need, and provided advice to make our day trips smooth and successful.

Even the other guests were nice.

We are already planning our return trip because our pictures don't do it justice and look forward to more enjoyable times at the Chateau de Challain.

Manny and I got engaged in February of 2013. I found Chateau de Challain through Coco's wedding on YouTube! As soon as I saw the video, I knew this was the place we would have our dream wedding!!! I quickly emailed Cynthia (not knowing she lived in the US) and she answered back in a blink of an eye. I spoke to her for a a while and she made me feel even more excited about our wedding!!! We planned a trip to go visit the chateau early December 2014! She set us up to be picked up at the train station and she set the gate house for Manny and I! As soon as we got closer to the chateau, you can see the tip top through the hills. Literally when we arrived, our jaws dropped and the chateau took our breaths away! When we were there, there was a Dutch movie being filmed inside the chateau but that didn't take away from our amazing visit! Tom & Tobby (the best ever) took us around the chateau and answered all the questions we had! Cynthia set up a dinner at the restaurant owned by the chef that would be part of our wedding day dinner!! We ate like a true king & queen! I even took pictures of all the dishes I specifically wanted for our wedding (pumpkin soup)!!! We spent a few days at the chateau and had NO regrets! We left feeling very confident about our wedding being held there... a year after! Not only was the chateau breathtaking, but most importantly we felt that our families and friends were going to be treated like royalty! EVERYONE at the chateau were SO welcoming and friendly, I felt as if we had known them for years and as if we were part of their family. During 2014 Cynthia and I had numerous Skype dates and spoke about everything Manny and I wanted for our wedding. We also got together in Miami (where we live) and spoke a little more about our wedding day. We had about 50 people at our wedding and it was a 3 day event. Everything we had ever dreamed about, Cynthia made it happen! She truly is amazing and passionate and if I had to do it over again, Cynthia and her fabulous team would be the ones!!!! She is now planning my brother's wedding because we wouldn't have it any other way :)

I really did not want to leave a review here because my experience with the owner Cynthia Nicholson has greatly disturbed me and I want to forget I ever knew her but I feel obligated to report what happened for the future couples who are considering getting married in this venue. I can only say that she is the most unprofessional, rude and displeasing person I have had to dealt with. Not only she's incompetent at being a wedding planner, but she disrespected me and my guests "her clients" greatly.
In the beginning you meet her she's very accepting of what you say and you think the contract is understood but later she disrespects every detail she possibly can in the contract, and she lies to justify her mistakes. She forgets constantly parts of the contract, during the wedding, we had cheese on our menu, we waited very long for this confused of what had happened, a waiter was sent to us saying that the cheese is not included, she had told him to go see the bride and groom instead of handling this herself, after some time that my husband goes to find her she comes to talk to me and I told her it is in the contract, she goes to check the contract (and this is all happening during dinner time while all my guests are waiting!) then some 25 minutes later she serves some cheese that my father in law had brought himself not even hers.
Later for the music band to start she was not there to coordinate and tell them to start, again we were waiting another 20 minutes wondering what is going on… my guests getting bored getting up and asking me what time the music started.. my husband had to get up himself and go search for them finding them sitting somewhere in the back to tell them to please start! I have never been to a wedding that has been so terribly coordinated! During all this wasted time the band started 45 min late due to her mistakes and we asked the band to stay one hour extra until 2 am since we had already lost one hour, and I had also paid 600euros extra to stay longer hours, again she denies this and lies to my family behind my back that this is not her fault and that the coordination fee and extra hour is not on the contract.. again lies these were clearly part of the contract! line by line! At this point my guests started to feel the tension and there was an argument between us and her.. I was consistently disturbed during my wedding night, cynthia getting the contract every time to check things that were all clearly in the contract! A wedding planner needs to be on top of the details and handle everything smoothly not coming constantly to us this or that is not included!It is so unprofessional it's ridiculous.
I have a very long list of her unprofessionalism, she tried to raise the price of the rooms after the contract had been signed; she didn't show up for a meeting we had in the Chateau.. we drove 4 hours to get there, waited 2 hours for her she never showed up; she tried to raise the contact amount herself without notifying us and sending us an invoice 1300euros more than what was agreed; the hair stylist she had reserved charging 100 euros for my guest burned my friend's hair by ironing her hair when it was wet; for the makeup it was supposed to be 75 euros later I found out she charged 100 some of my guests!
I had told her 3 or 4 times the menu and I had written this on her "event form" and one week before the wedding she forgets again and tells me there is an extra charge, and when I did not accept she said then she would take some of the decoration off
she did not bring the cake that we had asked for, it was from the bakery that we had disliked and all the guests later said the cake was not good; the day of the ceremony the decoration was being done completely different than what I had asked, I had to go in the middle of my hair and make up to tell them about the design and they told me they had no idea about that, my friends had to run around trying to find her all the time to correct her mistakes, the list goes on….

The worst part! All the disorganizations and terrible wedding coordinations aside, the next day of the wedding I find out that the room of one of my dear guests in the gatehouse had been in a terrible condition, with dust and mold in places and dirty tissues under the bed and the sound of the bell throughout the night that had kept them up, when my guest a very well respected gentlemen told her the conditions of the room, instead of accepting the responsibilities and excusing herself or checking out the conditions she rudely told him that the door is open and that he could leave! he told me he was never disrespected like that before in his life. She talked behind my back to my guests and lied to them that it was my fault that I put them there and I that had known the terrible conditions and I put them anyways completely a lie, it is her responsibility to make sure her rooms are in perfect condition, humiliating me behind my back in front of my guests. Later she admitted to me that she was unaware of the conditions of this room and again instead of accepting her mistake she again lies about my guests saying he's vicious, a complete lie my whole family was there they saw the whole thing this is a man that I know my whole life and I have never seen him angry or raise his voice to anybody! It is her job to listen to criticism and make sure all the guests are okay not to tell them to get out the door!
It was one of the worst experiences in my life dealing with her and I think she is a terrible person. The worst part that hurt me a lot was the constant lying behind my back whenever I was not there bringing me down for her mistakes, she told my guests I didn't pay for things like the coordination or the fireworks, again this was part of our contract! all of it! we even had 3 min of fireworks and she put only 1.5min! I have never seen such an unprofessional person before in my life, on top of forgetting and not respecting the contract she constantly lied whenever I wasn't there tying to bring me down and not accept her own mistakes and faults. It's such a shame that she ruins the experience of the chateau which is beautiful, all of my guests told me the only problem here is the manager, everything else is great, she is the problem.
I made a mistake by ignoring the negative comments here and focusing on the many positive ones but as it turns out the negative ones completely portray who she really is. If i had to do it again I would stay far from this place, I don't recommend this to any one if they want a well organized smooth wedding, there are so many beautiful chateaus in France, choose a professional venue that you can have peace of mind on your wedding day.

We had our wedding at Chateau Challain this past June and it was a complete and utter disaster. Though the setting is beautiful and the staff is lovely and hard working, the owner, Cynthia, was the least professional person I have ever dealt with in my life.

We had been planning this wedding one on one with Cynthia for 16 months. On the day we were set to arrive she informed us that due to her friend having outpatient surgery she would not be arriving until the day of our wedding (we had planned a 3 day event, with the wedding being on the final day) She assured us everything would go smoothly and that her staff would take care of us.

Day 1: Completely unenjoyable for us. Cynthia was supposed to handle logistics for a shuttle bus service we arranged to pick up our guests arriving by train but in her absence there was no direction and my husband and I spent the majority of the day running around and making frantic phone calls. That evening was to be our rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Cynthia arranged for her house florist to accompany us to the church since he had "seen a lot of weddings there" but he wasn't able to provide any direction and mostly shrugged his shoulders when we asked him any questions. It was the most unorganized waste of our time.

Day 2: We had worked really hard to plan a special, full day for our guests. At Cynthia's suggestion we had planned a bus trip into Angers, where guests could either spend the day in town or pick up some rental bikes for a ride to a winery for a tasting and some lunch. Things began to go horribly wrong almost immediately. We realized once everyone was boarding the bus that the driver did not speak English at all. It raised a red flag for us and we did bring our concern to Chateau staff but nobody offered to come with us and we took off on our trip. The driver got off at an early exit, apparently trying to locate the park where the rental bikes were waiting. She proceeded to drive through a residential area and stop not once, not twice, but THREE times to ask random people on the street for directions. Suffice it to say I was completely mortified. I had a bus of 40 of our closest friends and family being taken for a joyride and no way to communicate with the driver. By this point I was exhausted and crying from all the extra work we had to put into a weekend that we were told would be enjoyable and relaxing. My husband called Cynthia and expressed our extreme unhappiness and she agreed that should would be there that night.

Later that day we had a second rehearsal, time that could have been spent with our guests if the first rehearsal was handled correctly. After the rehearsal Cynthia pulled my husband aside to speak with him and upset him so much with her unprofessionalism and lack of concern that he didn't even want to come downstairs for dinner. She deflected, and continued to deflect even after we emailed her again when we got home, all blame onto other people. At dinner she was very rude to numerous of our guests, Im sure because she knew she was in the wrong and refused to admit it.

Day 3: Our wedding day went smoothly for the most part, other than the ceremony starting late because she forgot to pick up 7 of our overflow guests from the hotel. She booked their rooms and had arranged for them to be picked up and dropped off from dinner the night before, so how they were forgotten on our wedding day is beyond me.

Conclusion and Advice to Future Brides: Be very careful when dealing with Cynthia. She screwed us over on a lot of charges. It started with her charging us more for the fireworks package than she said in her original quote, which we let go thinking it was a small difference to pay when everything else would be perfect. She never reimbursed us for our bus trip joy ride, something we SHOULD NOT have had to pay for. We paid for real flowers on the gazebo, 400 euro to be exact. When we got there we noticed the flowers were artificial and when we called her out on it she said that real flowers would have melted. Well thats all fine and good, but we paid for real flowers and she never mentioned the flowers would be fake. 400 euro is not worth it. We also had 7 vegetarians at our wedding. She assured us that she would make a risotto or something substantial for them to eat, but all they received was the same roasted tomato and zucchini that was on everyone who ordered meat received. We paid 500 USD per person for those people to basically receive a side dish. Make her specify every single last detail you want on her silly word document "contracts" and then make her sign it. She asked my husband to put our deposit in a french account in Euros. The final payment she wanted in USD and funneling into various accounts. She is clearly ripping people off, money laundering and evading taxes while she goes.

For the first time I read this it was so upsetting for if any one knows me the last thing I am is rude. My family friends and customers all come first. This is why when my sister had to have emergency gallbladder surgery and having a 6mo. Old and Her Husband on a business trip half way around the world I ran to her side. Knowing I would be back the day before the wedding On Friday. To put the events in perspective, the couple arrived weds. Night by themselves other family came to the area but they told the family to stay in a hotel because they wanted to be alone. Also at this time the train strike was still going on so I was getting emails for some asking what to do and I gave the guidance as I did the week before with my wedding of 100 Australian’s FYI all went smashing! The Thursday afternoon the bridal party arrived, they had meet with our florist to see the church and do a rehearsal but he was unaware really what to do with this. I should of cancelled until I got back Plus emotions had already be flying for the trains were being cancelled all over and the groom and bride were not dealing well with this. We could do nothing to help. For that evening my staff hosted a lovely meal for them. They told the staff all was great. Friday morning a Bus was scheduled to pick up the group ½ would go to Angers to visit the city and shop the other ½ agreed on a Bike tour and wine tasting 3 separate companies where involved the Bus, the Bike & the Vineyard I simply ordered it and was not prepaid for this just the bus trip to Angers where the park was where the bikes where to be picked up. This was not the first time doing the tour we have had many in the past the 1st one I went to see how it was run and all was a success. But for this day a new driver was scheduled to take the group and got lost to which of the parks she should go to . At this time the groom called me . I called the bus company but it was Lunch time in France so I called back and I asked for him to get the drivers # so I could have the tour guide call her to solve the problem but for reasons beyond me he would not all he said was this was the most humiliating and embarrassing he ever experienced! I asked him to please give me the driver but he just said cancel the trip! I tried to tell him they were 5 min away I just needed to speak to the driver But his feeling of being over whelmed were beyond reason for being lost for 30min. Poor Boy! As they arrived Back from Angers that afternoon I was Landing and meet them at the church to do the church rehearsal. It was a wedding party of 10 so it did need a professional to tell them what to do. But the neither Bride nor groom would speak to me or except my apology. Not surprising for the brides own father had minor stroke on the plane on the way over but showed no concern. I also apologized to both Parents which they understood my priorities where to be with my sister. Yes I hired the companies but I was not the driver and they did not Pay to have a staff member go in fact they did not pay for what they cancelled But I did 2500E. So they did go to Angers and so they did pay for this service and if I had not go stuck with a 2500E bill I may of given them something towards this but to cancel a trip because you where lost for 30min and could of solved the problem by giving me the driver or getting her # was an act of a spoiled individual, and not understanding why I was with my sister was a case of only children Life will have hiccups The BBQ night was great all guest loved t and raved about the food. Some guest asked for cigars so we sent out a staff member to fill the request at 10pm, We try to ensure all request are made when the guest are at the chateau. Wedding Day all went great not one person even the bride or groom complained. They still were not really speaking to me except to answer a question when asked. Otherwise they spoke to my staff and said that things were great. But someone had to be the bad guy so that was I. When Leaving on Sunday I asked If I redeemed my self and the answer was yes ….But I guess they Lied so they thought of anything else bad they could dream up to say…such as I am a tax evader LOL…I guess they no nothing of international laws. Having my Event Planning Company in the US you get paid in the US and having a rental property in another country you pay for that there…It must be over their head this concept but for you intelligent people reading this I am sure you will be more clear. I can hardly even begin to describe how deeply disappointed I am about our ruined trip to France. I put so much, time, effort, and money into planning this very special trip. I had very carefully researched where we were going to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary, especially since it was going to be our first trip to France. We were so excited to find the Chateau de Challain, all the reviews sounded wonderful. I made our reservations over 2 months in advance and centered all our plans around our stay at the Chateau. We have 6 children so we could only afford to stay 2 nights since the exchange rate was over $400 per night, but they were going to be 2 of the most romantic nights of my husband’s life. I had planned for us to spend the entire second day in bed, never leaving our room. I had very carefully chosen the Tower room with it's canopied king size bed. I had also made arrangements for dinner at the Chateau the first night only, because, remember we weren't leaving the room on our second and full day there. I had purchased new lingerie for the occasion, some wine, and food to keep us shacked up nicely for the day. Finally we arrive at our Chateau after months of planning. We had taken a wrong turn along the way and arrived there very late, 9 o'clock in the evening. We were tired and starved but sooo looking forward to our stay at the fairytale castle that we had read about. . Upon arrival we were awed at the site of the Chateau. It was as majestic as its pictures and totally took away all the frustration of getting lost along the way. We couldn't resist taking a few photos outdoors even though were we anxious to get inside and eat. When we got inside we were surprised that we were not expected. Not only was there nothing to eat but they had also given our room away!! How could this be? I booked these 2 months ago, I proceeded to show them my e-mailed confirmation for the Tower room for this evening and the next. Sorry they explained, " We had a very exciting week with a family member's wedding here and the house is scheduled for a photo shoot during this time as well, I guess we just misplaced your reservations." They offered us a banana instead of our lovely dinner and then showed us to an alternate room. I was so upset that I started to cry. The room they had given us was beautiful but the bed was only a double. We had no choice but to take it. It's now 9:30 at night and we are in the middle of absolutely Nowhere! My husband is a very large man that sleeps on his back with his elbows out, so I spent the night in a chair, crying most of the time. In the morning, I was so tired and hungry. We still weren't sure what to do. We were told that the people in our room may be checking out today so we waited around to see if they were going to leave early enough for us to have at least 1 full day in the Tower room. The entire time that we spent at the Chateau we were alone. They were too busy with the photo shoot to talk to us and we finally figured out the other couple's plans when we ran into them. They were so sweet and felt badly about the situation, especially since they didn't care which room they stayed in. They also told us that the Chateau had plenty of other rooms with king size beds, so why weren't we offered one? We waited around, standing in the halls doing absolutely nothing until 1pm and then decided that our wonderful 2 day "love in" was not going to happen. We tracked down Rebecca to let her know that we would not be staying another night since our time here was obviously ruined. She then very politely asked me to pay my remaining balance and sent us on our way. The service was non-existent, the only person to look after us during our stay was Zeus the dog! The Chateau was beautiful and I'm sure that if they weren't too busy for us and not lost our reservations our visit may have turned out differently. It's just too bad that this horrible thing had to happen on such a special occasion for us. The funny thing is that we befriended the couple that was given our room and ended up spending the rest of the day touring another Chateau and dinning together. If you make reservations here I would reconfirm a couple of days in advance and make sure that there isn't anything else going on so that you would end up as ignored as we were.

We take all reviews very seriously and this one we took a month to get all the facts together, from our staff to the photographer that was at the Castle from Atlanta ,Georgia. As far as we can tell the facts are as follows 1 at a time The client "Romantic - Diane" used a second party agency to for her trip as we have not ever received a reservation set up in her name, but we did have an inquiry from an agency for that date. That agency did not send a conformation , so it would not go into the books until it became a reservation. Diane did have paperwork from the second party agency so Rebecca immediately upon Dianes arrival called the owners and was instructed to give them any room they wanted. During Rebecca's call James gave them a quick tour of the first floor of the Castle. At the Castle there are 5 Rooms with King size beds and Diane was offered any room she wanted as all guests are .The room that she chose was the original owners room , she liked it , the " Madame Rouchefaucauld Suite" . One of the few without a King Bed. The staff was not informed that her husband slept with his elbows out. It does not make sense that Our staff would " Show an alternative room and leave the guest crying " When we only had 1 other couple in the Castle and so many rooms. They all agree that She did however come down to Rebecca, later, about midnight , crying with a Bible in hand stating she still wanted the Tower Suite . We again explained there was a guest with a valid reservation sleeping in that room .Even when the staff made a special effort to make sure the Tower Suite was ready early the next day , it was declined. Their actual arrival time was closer to 11:00 PM not 9:00 PM as stated, and the guests for the Tower suite that she was requesting were in bed and asleep. For a guest to arrive at that time with no confirmed reservation and ask for a dinner is unfair all around, unless agreed upon before hand, in which we would try to accommodate. The guests then stated that they had cereal in their luggage and requested milk so that they could have their cereal to eat to which we were happy to oblige . Yes ,The staff did offer them fruit to go with the cereal as the husband said bananas were his favorite. The following morning they had a fireside breakfast and for over an hour conversed with the staff during which time she was informed that the Tower Suite would be ready by noon for them. When the room was ready the Staff found they had already loaded their car and were leaving and were only leaving a note in the room. They did not Track down anyone to pay ,the staff felt they were leaving and had no intention of paying. The fact that she does not tell you of her Breakfast that each and every Client shares each morning in the original kitchen or the option to have it in your room tells us there is more to this story than meets the eye. We do regret that the client did feel the staff was to busy for them and we will address that in the future , but we did not have a family wedding at the Castle in the month that the client was staying,( or in the previous or next month either.) We did have a photographer present for an up and coming wedding , and if they felt alone , I thought that was what she said she expected of her trip. She told the staff and put it in her comments that she wanted to be alone for her anniversary . We encourage all guests to wander the Castle and explore the Castle as it is exhilarating to see each historic room for the first time ,and to see our home as we live in it for the 5 month summer period. It is sometimes difficult to tell if a client wants companionship or not, but we have met some of our best lifelong friends in the Castle . While we are not perfect ,we do try to accommodate all that choose to stay with us and make your stay memorable. One can get lost in a 76,000 SQ FT Castle but if one is determined to not have a good time then that puts us at an unfair advantage and to us this is not the norm and hope the client did not come to us with what appears to be an agenda.

I'm sure the chateau is very nice, however we never got the chance to find out for ourselves because when we arrived after a long drive from Paris and through the Loire valley, and then past Angers it was 9pm. The chateau was either closed for business or locked down for the night, as the gates were locked and there were no cars in the parking lot next to the chateau. The town of Challain la Potherie appeared to be completely deserted, and since the hotel did not post their telephone number on their website I had no way to call them directly once we arrived in the town. After trying to get the attention of someone (anyone) at the chateau from the road, we gave up and drove to Chateaubriant and were fortunate to find a very nice room there for just 90 euros per night. My purpose in writing this is to advise anyone planning to stay there to make sure you know in advance what time the gates are locked and how to contact the chateau, because otherwise you may be in for a huge disappointment.

We recently stayed at the castle for a dear friends wedding. The castle is stunning and the grounds are beautiful. Thankfully, everything on the day went well and the happy couple had their fairy tale wedding.

The negatives: lack of clear communication and professionalism throughout our visit. As a wedding planner myself I pride myself on such attributes.
Guests arrived and no one was at the venue to greet them. They were left waiting 2 hours before someone arrived and showed them to their rooms.
Some guests were not made aware of the time and pick up point of the shuttle. When they asked for this information and if they could join the wedding party's shuttle they were told they were told to pay an extra 200 euros.
Lunch details were not communicated so many guests missed lunch or came too late when there was nothing left to eat.

Overall I get the impression that the ower runs this as a hobby, not a business hence the lack of efficiency, communication and professionalism.
For future couples considering this venue and wedding planner I would suggest the following:
Using a group email list to communicate all details - especially if the guests are from many different countries.
Creating a set itinery/newsletter for the duration of the stay so everyone knows what is going on.

Jade Thanks for Pointing this out to us but to clarify, 1) the Bride & Groom gave all the information to all the guest where and when the Bus would pick them up. I had no contact with the guest till they arrived in my Home. Which I greeted them on the steps as they unloaded. this guest Jade came by car later and the bride & groom had my attention for rehearsals so yes you had to wait for the bride who had the room list as she showed her guest the rooms You mentioned a Lunch in My contract there was never a lunch on the day of arrival which was at 3pm or on the wedding day. The couple was on a Budget and gave suggestions as I do where guest can go for a meal. We also Have a grocery store 10min away and a fridge for guest to use. On the day of arrival the Bride & groom booked a wine and cheese event. As for they, the bride & groom are Vegetarians I thought after a day of travel that guest maybe wanting more so out of my pocket I supplied a full meal. As a real Wedding planner every event in our home is different. The request are different and the guest are different. We are not a Hotel or a cookie cutter wedding reception hall. We are a home with couplet who choose the style wedding they want. Who is a guest to say it was not right when the couple was delighted.

We booked three rooms for a family birthday celebration six months in advance of our arrival date (this Christmas). Unfortunately, three months later, due to personal circumstances we had to cancel the reservation. We asked for the deposit back and were told by Cynthia that she had to turn away business because of our booking and that if she filled up those rooms we could get our money back.

Few things that have got up our noses a) She never told us any of the other rooms were taken which makes us think she has had no one wanting rooms at all and is therefore just keeping the money b) It was only three rooms and if she had "turned people away" she could have got back in touch with them to say she now had availability c) we gave her a lot of notice d) she is ignoring all emails requesting the deposit back - hence the bad review now on trip advisor. All in all a huge disappointment at being treated so badly.

Although the venue looks beautiful, the organisational process up until we had to cancel was like pulling teeth. It took ages to get answers to emails and in fact the place does not operate like a hotel as we were led to believe - it is more a venue. Great if you know exactly which meals you want to eat there, not so great if you want to come and go and have a flexible, relaxing break. In addition, we wanted to try and arrange local trips to vineyards, nearby towns etc and it took ages before we were put in touch with a tour operating company that were charging about 800 euros for six of us to go from Nantes airport to the Chateau! You can imagine how much the day trips cost!

Deposit & Cancellation Policy From the moment you confirm your date of the event. We ask for a deposit of 400E in this case of the total amount so that we can block this date and assure you of our services. In the event of a cancellation you will lose this deposit. As well as any other deposit that have been transferred according to the payment schedule. This is to cover our engagements, Reservations of other vendors, banking charges and any other charges incurred by the “Château” Any Vendors cancelled that where booked in the initial contract no fees will be charged 6mo before. After 6mo a charge will include depending on the time allowed This booking was over for a Prime Season and yes it was Booked 6mo. in advance. We had refusing others that wanted to rent the chateau. I told this client if we rented out the chateau for the day that she booked for I would return her deposit on Oct 18th at this time no other solid request had come in when she sent me an email. I also spent many hours gathering information for this client in her many request. She did send an email last week again asking for her deposit back and I did not answer for I had a possible request that did not confirm so a deposit was not due as of Yet. I have made advertisements to try to sell these dates. I had Booked a flight for the US to come over and care for these Guest 4months ago for it was over the holidays and all my staff have their Families to spend time with. So at the end of the day no deposit is due. I am sorry that any client is disappointed with us But you can not make everyone happy all the time but you can see from our reviews we try!

My husband & I stayed here during our honeymoon. We only spent one night here but it was an interesting experience to say the least. While the chateau is one the most stunning & beautiful places I have ever seen, our one night here started off on the worst foot. To start, let me say that the chateau is located in a very small town, where almost no one speaks English. This is also not at all like a traditional hotel where it’s open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with staff on hand at all times. With that being said, my husband & I arrived on a cold rainy Tuesday afternoon only to find that the large main gate was locked. We spent an hour driving & walking around the town, in the rain, trying to find a way onto the property or at the very least, someone to help us. After an hour, a gentleman pulled up to the gate & attempted to help us. Although he didn’t speak any English & I only speak minimal French, he understood that we were locked out of the chateau & needed to check in. He tried calling the chateau number a few times but there was no answer. Luckily, he knew a chateau employee & was able to call that individual to come help us. Fabian arrived a few moments later & informed us that he didn’t have anyone booked to stay at the chateau tonight, guests were scheduled to arrive 2 days later. After looking at my confirmation email & the deposit I’d already paid for my reservation, he realized his error & rushed to get everything ready for us. This involved unlocking the gates, unlocking the entire chateau, turning on lights, opening the shutters, turning on the heat, etc. Since no one bothered to mark down our reservation, there was not one single soul on the entire chateau premises. Fabian did everything in his power to make the remainder of our stay enjoyable, though. His customer service was exceptional. After the stress of thinking we were never going to get into the chateau, I wanted a glass of wine to drink. Luckily, Fabien had some for us to enjoy immediately. The chateau itself was amazing! We did not experience any of the cleanliness issues other guests have mentioned on this site. However, we stayed in a Tower room & I do think there is a bat somewhere in one of the windows in the bathroom area as there were very creepy, bat-like noises coming from there all night long. The grounds were beautiful; both the dinner & breakfast Fabian prepared for us were wonderful; our room was breathtaking. The whole chateau is something straight out of a movie or book. However, had it not been for the gentleman who stumbled upon us that afternoon, we would never have been able to stay here. We would have been forced to drive 3 hours back to Paris & find another hotel (one that’s actually opened everyday, with staff actually there!) for the night. We read reviews prior to booking this place & one couple mentioned arriving to check in only to learn their reservation was never saved or marked down. Turns out they booked through a third-party. We thought booking directly through the chateau website would help us to avoid having this issue. Clearly, that’s not the case. Furthermore, Fabian admitted to us during our stay that the owner tried to remind him a week prior that he had guests staying at the chateau on that Tuesday afternoon yet he thought she was incorrect & ignored her reminder. After all this was said & done, we checked out the next morning to learn we’d be charged for the bottle of wine Fabien gave us & the full amount for the dinner he prepared. It’s not that I have an issue paying for this but I felt some service recovery was warranted, seeing as how we were first greeted by a locked gate, next greeted by being told we had no reservation with them, & last told that the owner of the chateau remembered our reservation but not the actual employees there. My husband has a few years of Marriott hotel experience & I have a few more years of both Marriott & Hilton hotel experience (I currently work for Hilton) and I can assure you a situation like this would NEVER have been handled this way! At the very least, a complimentary bottle of wine would have been provided (we had to pay for ours!) or a discount on a meal offered (we had to pay full price, $150!). I understand I’ve written a novel here & I’m sorry. I just want to caution future guests who might stay here. Just because you book through the website & just because you pay a deposit, does not at all mean you will actually have a reservation here. This experience certainly put a bit of a damper on our honeymoon experience in France. I can assure you, our experience was definitely not worth 600 euros!

I want to apologies for your arrival not being what it should of been. You bring to my attention a need....to must have guest give an approximation of their time arrival in the days before. For Chateau Challain is a home not a Hotel and we have normal needs and once in a while to make a quick trip may be needed yet you are the only one home so a Note on the door is all we can do. I realize this was not the situation you were not expected yet you had a reservation. This is a human error... mine! I forgot to write it in the book for when I had received it it was during the preparation for a wedding on that day. I had call to remind my staff member a few days before so I am unsure what happened so I want to offer you a refund. I am very sorry for your experience and I think you can see from others this is not the normal practice in our home. The reason we do the B&B is so all can experience the atmosphere of an era gone by. We want you to feel at home in our home even if we are not able to be there. Thanks Cynthia

What are options to travel to the Chateau from the Nantes airport? Renting a car is not an option.

The only option from Nantes may be to catch a train to Angers and then get a cab or have the Challain bus pick you up. The cab will be cheaper depending on how many of you there are.

You can also take the Eurostar to Paris, then take a trains to Angers, which is about a couple of hours (prices vary a lot so buy the tickets beforehand) google "UK Voyages SNCF" to do that and then you can get a taxi from the station to the chateau, there's always a line of taxis available.
