Detailed Reviews
Most hotels in Puerto Rico are on the beach, but we wanted something different. Casa Cubuy is like a B&B in the jungle and was exactly what we were looking for. We knew it was close to some nice waterfalls from the photos, but what we didn't realize is that the hotel overlooks the waterfalls, so every room has an amazing mountain and waterfall view. There is a short maintained trail out back that takes you down to a swimming hole at the base of the waterfalls and a cool hammock hut to hang out in. The hosts are a mother and son team originally from Florida, but they have been living on the island since the 60's. They are very friendly and helpful and put together an amazing breakfast. We were there for 5 days and each day we had fresh fruit, the most amazing oatmeal you will ever have and then a rotating main dish. We had scrambled eggs and hashed browns, pancakes, breakfast burritos and french toast over the course of our stay. The community style dining encourages you to interact with the other guests which made each morning a treat. The rooms are simple, the beds are comfortable and the view is amazing. There is no air conditioning, but you won't need it because you are 1500 feet in the mountains where it's much cooler. There are virtually no mosquitoes either because the frogs keep the bugs at bay. Plan to eat dinner in town - we ate in Naguabo or planned our day so that we were elsewhere at dinner. Once we even grabbed a pizza to go and brought it back to the lodge.

We just got back to NY from Puerto Rico. What I like about Casa CuBuy was that it's in the jungle. The Croqui's sing all night. There are huge bamboo, fern plants.etc that give the feel of being in the jungle.
No bugs and No mosquitoes. I have hiked outdoors my whole life. I have to cover myself in deet to keep the swarms of bugs from eating me alive. Not here. The Croqui's eat ALL the bugs and there are none to bother you. I may move there just for this reason alone.
The CuBuy property has a river with waterfalls and pools of water you can swim in.
They serve breakfast at a long common table where you can chat with people from all over the world and from your own state.
The rooms are comfortable and there are no TV's. There is Wi-Fi. But, please go there to unplug and you will be surprised how relaxing it can be.
We will repeat. My wife said this is the best spot I have ever found and we've been all over.
We also spent time in San Juan, but stayed at Casa Cubuy afterwards and it really made our vacation.
Lots of outdoor things to do in el yunque. There are beautiful sandy beaches a short drive away. There are lots of restaurants nearby too.

Let’s just say that I had no idea what my son and I were in for when we booked our stay at Casa Cubuy! This place is a little piece of heaven, to say the least!
We stayed here for 2 of our 5 nights while visiting Puerto Rico and Vieques Island.
Marianne and her son Matthew go above and beyond to make the visit to El Yunque Rainforest a memorable one!
If your looking for a five star hotel based on amenities and lavish towels and linens, then do not come here. The simplicity of Casa Cubuy is what makes it so perfect! Very slow internet connection no pool, no Jacuzzi, no traffic. It’s exactly what we wanted; to rid ourselves of the commotion of the real world we come from!
There’s a beautiful waterfall right at the base of the property, just a short 5 minute hike. The water is so pure and was refreshing to swim in! Entrance to the rainforest is just a short walk, but come prepared and bring old hiking shoes as it does get muddy! They’re all walking sticks provided and for a small fee Matthew packed us a lunch to take with us on our hike!
Breakfast is provided and is over the top delicious! There is a small breakfast bar on the patio area which is served daily at 8:45 AM. Our breakfast consisted of fresh fruits fresh squeeze juices, coffee, breakfast burritos, homemade oatmeal, and stuffed French toast.
I cannot say enough and words really do this review no justice. If you want to immerse yourself in the rainforest, then definitely stay here!

On our recent trip to Puerto Rico we wanted to explore the variety of experiences the island had to offer. Our stay in the heart of the rainforest at Casa Cubuy was magical! As we made our way up, up, up the mountain on the windy narrow road we knew we were in for an adventure. The lush vegetation and views were gorgeous. The path to the waterfall was well maintained and we had the falls and swimming hole all to ourselves. The sound of the coquis and the waterfall at night was like nothing we had ever experienced! The hosts were very friendly and helpful, the accommodations were clean and comfortable (nothing fancy), the breakfast delicious. Such a fun addition to our beach vacation!

Such a beautiful hidden gem on the back side of El Yunque National Forest surrounded by lots of hiking trails and a short walk to waterfalls. The views from anywhere on the property are amazing. The rooms and common areas were very clean and there are plenty of areas to relax and disconnect. Bring ear plugs to sleep at night because animals and insects like to sing all night.
We recommend hiking to Infinity Falls. It’s worth the climbing and mud but it’s for pretty experienced or active adventurers. Our gracious host offered us packed lunches for our hike that were exactly what we needed on the trail.
We highly recommend Casa Cubuy to get an immersive tropical forest experience and avoid tourist traps.

The views from the shared decks are breathtaking, and the location is great for those who want to do a bit of hiking or relaxing. The private path down to the waterfall is lovely. The buffet breakfast was pretty good and quite filling. There was always fruit, juice, coffee, and oatmeal. The main dish was different every day we stayed; we had burritos, french toast, and eggs and hash browns. We stayed in the cheapest room, but we felt it was overpriced. The room needs some TLC - the bed wasn't comfy and the door to the bathroom wouldn't close. One of the main hangout areas is right outside our room, so it wasn't very private. I would recommend staying here for a few days for the views alone.

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Cubuy. Suggest trying to arrive during the daylight as the road curves a good amount. There is a fridge for guests to use to keep things cold and a microwave/plates/flatware/glasses. When we were there there was no evening food service, but breakfast was filling and tasty. Our room (#2) was clean and comfortable. We slept with the sliding glass doors open and enjoyed the sounds of nature! The hammocks and outdoor seating were so inviting! We finished our book of Puerto Rican fables while we were there. It was fun reading them while imagining the things happening in the beautiful views we were looking at.
The pool that you can walk to on the trail below Casa Cuby was fabulous! We were there in January and it was a bit nippy, but we still spent almost a full hour playing in the water there.
The best part was the 1 kilometer walk up to the back side of the rainforest where we could then take a lovely trail for an hour plus walk to some lovely swimming pools. You find that trail from behind the first little pavilion. I would suggest downloading All Trails or some app to help you navigate the hike (as we accidently took the road that was washed away for a bit, which isn't really what you want to do since the road was, well, washed away and is not safe!). Again, we were there in January and mid-week, so there was really not many people around, but we hiked in the rainforest for 4 hours without seeing any other people. It was amazing!

The location is absolutely amazing. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It was an immersive experience high up in the hills of the rainforest. It's just a short walk to hiking trails in El Yunque. The breakfast was wonderful - fresh fruit and juices each day with Puerto Rican-style oatmeal and pancakes, potatoes, and eggs. There is a lovely walk down to the river where you can swim or soak. The sounds of the coqui was amazing and surprisingly wonderful, the flowers just gorgeous. Hammocks were almost everywhere. It's a great place to unplug and recharge. The lodge owners are kind, friendly, and helpful.

Our family of 3 stayed for 4 nights at Casa Cubuy in December and had the most relaxing time in nature. The room we stayed in was simple yet comfortable and roomy, and had the most magnificent view of the rainforest and waterfalls. Marianne and Matthew were wonderful hosts and gave us great information on the nearby hikes and restaurant recommendations. Breakfast was included everyday and was so delicious. We loved eating all the fresh fruit, porridge, eggs, hash browns, french toast and breakfast burritos. We also did the Birding Before Breakfast tour and Nocturnal Rainforest Walk with Skip during our stay and enjoyed both immensely. We highly recommend Casa Cubuy for anyone looking for a tranquil and relaxing stay in the rainforest away from the crowds.

This place is pure magic, my favorite location on the entire trip. (Also stayed in San Juan Viejo and Vieques.) The rooms were very nice. Very clean, comfortable bed, nice shower, plenty of towels. The Ecolodge has a very chill vibe, nice common area encourages people to meet and talk, but you could also be private and do your own thing. We met interesting people including hosts and staff. Lots of hammocks for lounging. We had a balcony which was great, but I think any of the rooms would have a good view of the mountains. We saw 3 waterfalls from ours! The real magic begins at night when the coqui and other night creatures start to sing. Also, the short walk down to the river pool was moderately challenging. The pool is spectacular. Bring water shoes and take a little time to enjoy the hammock in a little shelter. The southern entrance to El Yunque is a short drive away. Be sure and go to Noelia's, the restaurant nearby. One of my top two meals in Puerto Rico! If I ever return to Puerto Rico, I'd like to stay at the Ecolodge for at least 4 or 5 nights and leave the world behind.

Hi,
My wife and I liked the Casa Cubuy lodge. I don't think it had mayor structural damage, although railings and such were torn off. The frogs survived nicely. They were quite noisy. The birds were not so fortunate. Just before we left we saw a single, lone, little bird. The owners told us that the restaurant was very good before the storm, but of course we had no way of knowing. We went out for dinners and carried in junk food for breakfast and lunch. We would like to go again and see more of the forest.
I have absolutely no idea what modern parents consider "friendly" to their children. Other than not bringing my child to restaurants which are obviously not welcoming to a child if they charge large amounts of money for a meal and have adults paying for the quiet and ambiance, my experience was that it was my responsibility to care for my child and make sure my child did not disturb any other patrons of any establishment we visited, not the other way around. This is the attitude adopted by everyone I have ever seen in recent years (none of whom were from the US) successfully traveling with 6-12 month olds on up.
However, if you are asking if special actions have been taken at Casa Cabuy to prevent your child from falling down the steps, sticking her finger in the electrical outlets, etc, I would say the answer is no. Additionally, people come there for peace and quiet and to visit the rain forest. Hammocks abound over steep cliff views. I expect protracted screaming or tantrums would be most unwelcome by most other patrons. And there are quite a few staircases, the nearest restaurant is 1/2 mile walk (or drive) down a steep hill, the breakfasts are communal and consist mainly of delicious fruit and a main course with adults conversing about their nature related activities, planned and experienced. I did not see any highchairs, though they may have them. If you plan on hiking with your child on your back (or front), your child is a good traveler and mostly quiet when well attended, and you do not expect special treatment, I imagine anywhere would be a good choice. If you are looking for a Chuck E. Cheese, this is not the place.
