I could not have found a better place to celebrate my 70th birthday together with a group of friends. Vanessa gave us all a warm welcome and coped admirably with the pressure of taking care of a full house over the three days we stayed. Thornton Lodge is a fabulous building with large superbly furnished rooms with attention paid to... More

We arrived to a very warm welcome from the owner who checked us in to room number 5 which was really lovely. A very large room with a four poster bed and views of the gardens around the stately home. There was everything you could need in the room and it even had an iron and ironing board under the... More

Hi Rachel, thank you so much for your kind words, especially as I made an exception to my 2 night stay rule and welcomed you into my home for a one night Saturday night stay. I'm sorry you were unhappy about breakfast - as you know, I do everything on my own and there were an awful lot of guests... More

We arrived at Thornton Lodge a little later than we had been expected and Vanessa took the trouble to contact us by text to say that she would be away for a short time but back soon. She was back before we arrived and by the front door waiting to welcome us. She gave us a free upgrade to another... More

Stayed 3 nights with my wife. Large, elegant country house in a very quiet hamlet off the main road. Huge bedroom very tastefully decorated and excellent modern bathroom with bath and shower. Fridge in the room with fresh milk (not UHT) much appreciated. Endlessly quiet only disturbed by the occasional birdsong and distant bleating of sheep. Big choice for breakfast... More

We recently stayed at Thornton Lodge on our first holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. The lodge is a beautiful, traditional building, with great character. Our hostess Vanessa, gave us a warm personal welcome on arrival, and the accommodation was first class in every way. The service was excellent, and nothing was too much trouble. Add to this the beautiful scenery,... More

Many hotels and B&Bs claim they are quiet - this one really is. I rarely slept so well. Our room was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated. The lounge features large armschairs, books, magazines and a billiard table. The owner was very helpful and had great ideas for sightseeing in the area. One the arrival day, we were warmly greeted with... More

Our party took over the whole house and Vanessa made everyone extremely welcome, she served a delightful dinner and an excellent English breakfast. To top it all great value. The mobile reception for Vodafone works and there is free Wifi.

We were 3 couples looking for somewhere special for a short break in the Yorkshire Dales. We stayed here on the 14th August, I stumbled across Thornton Lodge on a random internet search and how lucky were we. Venessa was really accomodating from the first telephone call, recommending the impressive Wensleydale Heifer and allocating us 3 lovely rooms for a... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Thornton Lodge is a family home in Upper Wensleydale. Vanessa lives there with her family and offers b&b during the summer. She has a 5 star gold rating from Visit Britain and has been accepted as a prestigious Wolsey Lodge. All rooms are different, pleasantly decorated with very comfy beds and nice views and there are lots of pictures on her website. She cooks a really nice breakfast and can sometimes cook an evening meal for guests by arrangement. The house has some wifi but as the last one on the exchange in a rural area it's only slow. It is extremely quiet at the house, especially after the loss of her pet peacock Percy during the summer of 2015. She is not licensed but encourages guests to bring their own drinks to enjoy at the house and provides glasses and either fridges or wine coolers in all rooms. One room is reserved for guests with mobility difficulties and two rooms are allocated for guests needing single occupancy. Children over 8 years of age are welcome at the house in her large ground floor suite. In winter she sometimes hosts for guests celebrating special events. Generally she avoids taking bookings to stay at the house just for one night. Whilst the house is huge - around 9000sqft, Vanessa does everything herself and therefore restricts the number of rooms booked at anyone time to a maximum of 12 guests - generally there are 6-8 guests staying during the week and a few more on a weekend. ... more   less
