Arrived quite late at night, due to bad weather -the ride from the airport took about 2,5 hours. Beatrice prepared a nice meal for me and was very sweet. Mateo seemed to be a good guy as well, but then asked me what I thought about the two Dutch girls that disappeared in Boquete. He kept telling me it was... More

Previous reviewers have said almost everything there is to say, a very basic establishment with lovely hosts and heaps of birds. Don't come here if you want luxury, but if you want to pay anything less than $120 per night - there are no other options in Gamboa. We just loved our time here. If you can speak Spanish, it... Mateo is a nice man and will drop you off at the park early in the morning. His English is very limited, alas. His wife, Beatrice, is also nice, but little English. They can phone their grandson though, and you can talk to him & his English is excellent. The rooms are okay, nothing special, but clean. The breakfast is... More

We agonized over what rating to give Mateo’s. He has a loyal and enthusiastic (mostly young back-packers) reviewers who love the place because it is so very different from their normal comfort zones; they can pretend they are experiencing the real Panama while at the same time getting a feeling of being close to the environment. However, like Mateo and... More

We enjoyed the great hospitality of this sweet couple and enjoyed watching the many agouti's and birds visiting the garden. The bungalow was basic but clean. Would visit again and stay longer next time.

We stayed one night with Beatrice & Mateo in their tiny basic backyard bungalow. They bent over backwards to please us, and their other German guest. Mateo gave us a tour of the entire town and surroundings in his a.c. car. Beatrice cooked a delicious dinner for $10 ea. and we watched the agouti's, and tropical birds come to their... More

This was a great experience! There were more animals coming through the garden than we saw during our jungle walks. The owners were very helpful and they drove us to catch our boat tour which we might have missed otherwise. They cooked a delicious dinner for us as well. It was very peaceful to just chill in the hammock and... More

I stayed here with my friend in August. Mateo and Beatrix are such lovely people and did all they could to make our stay special. Mateo drove us around town to show us what was there and very kindly took us to the head of the walking trails the next couple days. We didn't speak any Spanish and Mateo and... More

Mateo is a living legend. The B&B is very basic, but it is not the reason to go. Mateo & Sra. Beatrice are hospitality personified. Their home is warm with a welcoming patio and lovely morning coffee & breakfast. Mateo drove us all over Gamboa telling us the history that he has lived. He showed us the old, the new,... More

I stayed here for one evening before taking an early ferry the next day to Barro Colorado Island. When I arrived Mateo and his wife greeted me kindly and checked me in, soon afterwards Mateo showed me the monkeys and Toucans that hang out in his backyard! The place is quaint and comfortable, although if you want 5 star accomodation... More
