I am being as objective as possible. We booked a room with a private pool at the Rethymno Royal. It advertises 2 restaurants and the photos on their website and booking.com show a beautiful restaurant, variety of foods (text reads : variety of Mediterranean food). We were shocked to see that people queue for 25 min downstairs (try sitting up for 25 min waiting in line in summer heat with a baby and 3 years old, both very hungry).
Despite having 2 restaurants advertised, there was only one at the other hotel ( Rethymno Mare, which is the cheaper version of Royal). After waiting in line, we realised that there was no edible food. French fries and canned vegetables are medditeranean traditional food? Dirty restaurant, chairs with holes in them, food was awful (tried giving a brocoli to my baby but it was extremely salty and watery). There were so many people waiting for a table and for some food everyone complaining. We tried to speak with the manager and the receptionist said we will be contacted by the manager. 7 days have passed and we are still here and no sign from the manager. We had to rent a car and go outside to eat as there was no way for us to get a table and decent food. However, as the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, it is a 15-20 min car drive to the nearest village/ city. So we paid for our meals at the hotel but we are forced to go out. Many other guests are doing the same.
Room was not well cleaned and we only got 1 soap (tiny one) for a family of 4 for 7 nights stay ! Room was never cleaned, they only come to pick up the garbage and change towels if you ask for this (once every two days).
There is no 5 stars service as they advertise and nothing to do in the area.
On the plus side : The water park is great indeed and our children loved it, the staff working there is amazing. Same for the mini disco in the evening, we were so happy that at least we got this, otherwise our holidays would have been a total disaster. Also many thanks to the two girls working at the snacks and drinks at the pool, they were lovely!
I am seriously considering filing a formal complaint for false advertising and misleading information for customers.
On top of this, the restaurant manager yelled at my daughter (not even 4 years old) and made her cry.
Bed sheet had holes in it, the fridge in the room is not working and you have to pay 16 euros if you want to use the locker in the room (which 5 stars or even 3 stars hotel asks you for money to use the locker in your room after you paid a fortune for the holiday ????).
The room with the private pool is very nice but not worth it given the overall situation with the lack of service at the hotel.
We are truly sad because we were looking so much forward to this holiday and it was a huge miss due to the hotel. We feel mislead and lied to.

Rethymno Mare Royal Hotel & Water Park is a perfect choice for any family or couple looking for a relaxing stay in Rethymno, Crete.
It offers guest free access to their own water park, and with the beach just a 3minutes walk away, it is an ideal base. There is multiple pools suitable for adults and children.
The rooms and suites are modern and offer a touch of luxury and escape from the summer sun.
One of the best features of a stay at Rethymno Mare Royal Hotel and water park is the All-Inclusive option. You have access to breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and daily snacks and drinks. The standard of food served is very high and offers guests a taste of some local Cretian cuisine. The unlimited ice-cream was a great bonus for our children!
We also found that the rooms with large bunk beds were ideal for families. The air-conditioning worked really well, and this was a welcome escape from the hot summer days.
A special mention must be given to the staff in the restaurant and bar staff. They made us feel very welcome and worked well together as a team.
Overall I would highly recommend Rethymno Mare Royal Hotel & Water Park for anyone looking for a relaxing stay while visiting Crete.

Great place where families with children can feel safe. The place is small enough that the children quickly get an overview and feel comfortable. It is great to have activities adapted to children so that they can easily come into contact with other children through play, even if they do not speak the same language. Activities stop at a reasonable time, which is appreciated by families with children, that there is peace in the hotel from approx. At 11 p.m.
Lots of praise for the "animation team" who had lots of energy and attention to the guests at all times. Dear Linda, Zambia, Maria and Vadim, we were also extra happy in the various meals.
The food was quite ok, and sometimes better than other days. In any case, you will always find plenty of fresh and delicious fruit and vegetables.
Improvement potential for hygiene in the dining hall. Glasses and plates were not satisfactorily cleaned. The dining room is small for all the guests so it gets very hectic. The staff do their best to be flexible and accommodating. The coffee is not good.
The surroundings are incredibly beautiful with lovely views and vegetation. The rooms are quite ok, but somewhat worn. I am unsure about cleaning the bathtubs..
Based on the price and expectations, we are very satisfied. The staff were extra on the offer side when we wanted rooms close to each other and accommodated us, which we really appreciated.
Thank you for having us!

I’ve been to many different hotels on different Greek islands, but this is probably the worst of them all. They advertise is as a 5-star hotel, but believe me it’s barely 2 to 3 stars worth…
The rooms are all outdated and haven’t had any maintenance for a while. After some days one of the airconditioners broke and after complaining about it, the answer was ‘we can nothing do about it’.
The food in the restaurant is no 5-stars worth either. All the plates and glasses are dirty and there is almost no variety in the food that is being served. Most of the personnel though out the hotel is kind though.
The floor at the swimming pool is very slippery, so be careful when you walk there. I’ve never seen them clean the pools, there is a lot of sand inside the children’s pool.
The beach in front of the hotel is not the most beautiful nor child friendly. You need to rent a car to be able to visit the beautiful beaches.
My advise, do yourself a favor and look for another hotel.

Great was our surprise when we arrived, the room dates from another age. Air conditioners are yellowing over time, remote control that doesn't work... We asked to change rooms and we were dissuaded. Cleaning is partially done sometimes at 6 p.m. when we return from the swimming pool. Absolutely does not deserve 5 stars!! It's a lie. The icing on the cake is that you have to pay for water in your room even when you are All in! The staff is smiling and on top. But given the price offered, the services in no way reflect those of a true 5 star hotel. The hotel needs a refresh...and more variety in the food which is too greasy. Too much oil! We will not return...the photos are misleading...

What a disappointment, we didn't expect to be so disappointed by this hotel, even if it is OK, but it is not worth more than 3 stars.
Power outages every night from Saturday to Wednesday morning, therefore no power and above all no more air conditioning, significant heat in the room and 3 or 4 nights without sleep.
The room had 4 small windows and a bay window, the small windows did not have curtains, so at 6 a.m., bright sun...
The cleaning ladies came by but didn't make the beds, make do with the sheets on the bed and no toilet paper either, you had to ask at reception.
No water fountain available, you have to buy bottled water.
For meals, we sometimes had to wait more than 30 minutes in a warm corridor before getting a table.
The swimming pools and bars close at 6 p.m....so it's not cool.
The corridors are horribly noisy, vacationers disrespectful of others' sleep, talking or shouting until 3 a.m. and many get up at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast, all the while making noise.
The meals are OK, but you should not arrive towards the end of the opening hours, otherwise the choice is limited.

i went here with my family- the food is outstandingly horrific. i bought my senior mother with me and the poolside is a danger hazard as it is so slippy, my family didn’t even use the pool. you have to be served food in the day time and they make you feel greedy if you order for a family. not to mention no afternoon entertainment at all.

Just returned from here and have had a fantastic holiday. We can't understand the negative reviews on here to be honest. It is very true that this hotel is not suitable for wheelchairs, buggy or anyone with mobility issues. There are a few lifts but there will always be steps involved too.
We had a family room, split into 2 separate bedrooms and bathroom. It was very clean and the cleaners came every day, even if to just empty bins, change sheets and towels.
The pool area is lovely and kept very clean. The pool bar serves drinks and snacks during the day and there's plenty to choose from.
The restaurant is probably one of the best we've known for all inclusive (and we've been to a lot!). There was so much variety, bbq lunch and evenings aswell as lots of other choices inside and theme nights too. Even the fussiest eater would be able to find something. Our our issue, and it was a minor one, was we did find the desserts rather repetitive.
There is loads of entertainment daytime and evenings. Lots going on in the pool area during the day and in the amphitheatre at night. As someone else mentioned, most of it is done in French. But, generally we didn't find it a problem. The atmosphere was fun and you didn't necessarily have to understand the language to join in.
All the staff at the hotel work very hard. We do have to give a special mention to Nikos, Myton, Aleksandros and the 2 named Manolis in the restaurant. Anastasia, Linda and the young chap I the pool bar. They were all so friendly and helpful.
Can highly recommend this hotel and, if we return to Crete, we will certainly be back!

Unfortunately the cleanliness was not there. Whether it was cleaning the rooms, or washing dishes in the restaurant, or sometimes you had to choose several glasses or plates before finding acceptable ones. The food was good but not very varied during the week. The buffet selection was limited. The staff have always been very friendly. The entertainment team was very friendly and did their best with resources that seemed limited to me. The swimming pool was also not very clean, the sides where the water overflows were even greenish. The hotel is partly dated. The slide joints hurt...
In short, we do not necessarily recommend this hotel which is classified 5 stars, but does not deserve all of them.

Rethymno Mare and water park in Skaleta in Crete was by far the worst holiday experience of our entire lives. The most expensive room (with private pool) had mold everywhere, stains on the bed, blood on the wall and a urine stench in the bathroom. You won't soon forget the public toilets there either. The food was very bad, you had to wait 20 minutes each time on a staircase and in a corridor before you were allowed to enter the dining room, plates were wet and the glasses were foggy. We were offered another room through the head office of Corendon, the hotelier and hostess, but this room was not much better.
This resort is recommended as a 5-star all-inclusive resort but is not even worth 1 star. It is pure deception and this resort is also listed as a favorite on the Corendon site.

Great Amwell, United Kingdom55 contributions35 helpful votesHi, I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions about the hotel. I need your help.
1. Do you provide sun loungers for each guest at peak season?
2. Are the sunbeds plastic, metal or wooden?
7. Do you supply parasols too?
2. Do you think there is a problem finding a space with a sun lounger by the pool.
3. Is there waiter service by the beach, the pool area during the day, evening bars and restaurants?
5. Are the drinks served by waiters at the bar areas or and restaurants?
4. Do you provided with towels in the room and the pool area?
8. Is the wifi good? Is it free?
9. Does the hotel have a pool table?
10. Are the cocktails on all inclusive?
Thanks for your time and look forward to your answers!
Tony
Hi Tony, we visited the hotel in April, so I can't answer all your questions because it was too cold to swim in the see.
The bottom line is they previde sun loungers etc, but it is at first come, first served basis.
I guess in high season, you have to put your towels very early.
Sunbeds are white plastic. There is an umbrella and little table per 2 chairs.
There is no waiterservice, you have to get your drinks yourself, butit is really very close nearby.
For towels at the pool you have to pay 10 euro that you get back when you turn them in.
Wifi is free.Inthe room is not so good, itgoes on and off.
In the lobby it is very good though.
Ther isno pool table.
Cocktails are all inclusive, except a few.
