My husband and I stayed here for a week for my birthday in February. Upon arrival our check-in was quick and efficient, reception staff always very friendly, attentive and helpful. Room was beautiful, some may say a little dated but we liked the vibe as it is a vintage hotel after all. Room was cleaned daily with fresh towels and replenished toiletries when needed. Breakfast was nice, good selection, wasn't ever as hot as I'd like but still nice none the less - plenty eggs, bacon, sausage, breads, cheeses, hams, cakes etc. Hotel is located close to a supermarket and bus stop but we found it easier to use the local Uber service. We ate at the hotel for dinner one evening and can not fault the food at all, absolutely beautiful with beyond top quality service. Close enough to visit Funchal city by bus or taxi but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet. Fantastic views and lovely flowers. Would definitely recommend this holiday.

This was our 4th visit to Madeira. The previous 3 times we stayed in central Funchal where the air quality can be poor due to the high volume of vehicles, especially buses. My wife suffers from asthma, so the location of this hotel, set further out and higher in the hills was perfect. Also, having a large supermarket on the doorstep made for easy shopping.

The hotel rooms, staff and facilities were excellent. Every request we made were acted upon promptly to our complete satisfaction. Our holiday included breakfast which we found to be very good, both in variety of choice and quality.

Don't know how good the public transport system is from here as we rented a car, which I would recommend as you get to see much more of the island.

We had already experienced a stay at this hotel 20 years ago, which was very satisfactory and extremely relaxing at the time. The facilities were also in good condition.

Unfortunately, little has changed since our last visit two decades ago. The towels that we had used 20 years ago were still in use and showed clear signs of wear, even the edges were unraveling. When we arrived, we were immediately advised to use the pool towels more often, which seemed a bit strange to us.

Nevertheless, after four days, we put the room towels on the floor in the hope that they would be replaced. Unfortunately, this did not happen. Another point that disappointed us.

In addition, a new road has been built in front of the rooms, which gave us the impression that the vehicles were driving right through our room. Especially in the nights between 1 and 4 a.m., there were many young people on loud motorbikes and cars without silencers, which led to sleepless nights. The next morning we even discovered circles drawn by the rear wheels of the vehicles.

An important tip when choosing a hotel: always make sure that there is no road in front of the hotel, even if it offers a sea view.

The second point goes to the hotel only because of the extremely friendly staff.

The next morning, we even discovered circles drawn by the rear wheels of the vehicles.

An important tip when choosing a hotel: always make sure that there is no road in front of the hotel, even if it offers a sea view.

The second point is awarded solely due to the exceptionally friendly staff at the hotel.

I recommend this place if searching for where to stay near funchal. However this place was affected by covid just like any other place so afew things need to be fixed fan needed in rooms gym need to reopen. They have cleane swimming pool and sauna local buses available for transport. Food expensive slightly cheap if paid in advance when booking hotel. Near by shops available it is a quiet place with good customer service.

The facility was certainly very beautiful once.
But now the entire facility is in need of renovation. This is clearly visible in every nook and cranny.
When there are 5 stars on the door, we wonder how that is possible. The staff are really very friendly and make every effort! The food is basic...nothing more.

The food was poor quality, repetitive and luke warm. Even cold. Staff in restaurant attentive. Hotel needs updating. Towels thin and not bath size. Shuttle bus not free, although we were told it was. You also need to book it.

After reading reviews here we were expecting a quiet few days at a top-notch hotel to nicely round-off our fairly busy Madeiran holiday. So what a disappointment to find a tired looking hotel seemingly unchanged and unimproved since it was inaugurated in the 1990s.

Our room had its quite possibly original 4:3 tube TV with worn-out remote control. The main curtains have been washed so many times that they are now 5 or 6 inches too short! Our pillows, which we didn't check until attempting to sleep, were bags of lumpy filling - possibly again due to age and machine washing. The mattresses were decidedly average. A complimentary bottle of Madeira and the cake previously mentioned has been replaced with a tray of: a half-bottle (37.5cl) of red wine, 4 small (25cl) bottles of water, a handful of peanuts in a little tin and a pencil to note down what had been consumed. Total price for the 6 items was 27 euros! And there was no fridge to chill the water either! A real problem if travelling with medicines as we were. The 'lovely' gardens seemed unkempt apart from a quick mow and hedge trim.

A really lovely espetada meal at the village As Vides restaurant (turn left at front of hotel and it's down the first or second road on the right) on our first night improved our feelings for the place but noisy Friday night customers at one of the hotel's own restaurants didn't cease until after half past midnight. Then the challenge of trying to sleep with uncomfortable pillows could begin.

The second, Saturday, night saw a function in the garden restaurant. The singing only ceased at 01:30 after a complaint to the hotel night security man. More noise ensued for some time as the locals left.

The breakfasts on the terrace could have been nice but I really previously haven't come across a hotel that doesn't even attempt to keep the hot items warm. There were candles underneath the serving trays but they were not lit. Luke-warm bacon and luke-warm scramble to go with the cold beans and cold mushrooms, anyone? Madeleina was charming but most of the rest of the staff appeared as if they didn't want to be there. We got to know how they must feel.

I guess the problem is that the 5* guests that they aspired to attract have long since gone and they're now left with coach parties of hikers and booking.com clients. So there's no perceived need to spend anything in order to make their guests' stay better. After all, there's little chance of anyone revisiting. We've seen this attitude before at a hotel in Fez. Very similar traits.

Wifi! I forgot to mention the wifi! With availability only in reception an investment here would really be of benefit to the customers. Not likely this millennium, though. The hotel that we'd stayed at for our first four nights in Madeira had wifi throughout the building. And that was 'merely' a 3* hotel. (The Madeira Hotel in central Funchal if interested, a hotel showing a proper respect for its (often returning) guests.)

I think you won't have any difficulty in finding somewhere better. This is not a five star establishment.

The hotel does not offer a collection from the airport. There are plenty of taxis that can arrange the transfer. Alternatively, there is the 'Aerobus' (roughly hourly) that can get you into Funchal, and from there, you can pick up either the 3 or 96 bus to Estreito.
